I got a call from this number today and thought it was a scam. I called Royal Bank first and they didn't know about it (because it's a number from their credit card division, not banking). Anyhow I then called the Royal number on the back of the credit card and quickly found out that they were calling because my credit card had been used all over the Internet. So it was a legit call. Although it didn't seem legit at first. Card cancelled and all 20+ charges reversed. Someone tried to go on a shopping spree. I'll be very cautious when using my CC online from now on.

I confirmed with Royal Bank Visa  credit card services ( the toll free number on the back of the card) that this number is legit. I was called this number and received a voice message because my credit card was used for fraudulent purposes. If you get this message call your credit card and find out why the security dept called you.

I just got a call from this number, I wrote it down, did not respond in any way - I then called back via the regular RBC numbers, and went through proper channels and found out they were in fact trying to get a hold of me to check on some activity. The activity was NOT mine so the card has been cancelled. I don't like RBC's approach of automated call the way this comes across is a scam however the number is legit. That being said I'd follow the same procedure I did the first time anyway - incoming numbers can be faked.

Hey all, I did not call this number back, just called the one on the back of my credit card, and sure enough, someone had my card number and spending money at JC Penney in Texas (I live in Alberta Canada). When I called the number on back of my credit card and told them I thought the 1-800-711-9946 number might be a SCAM, and wondering if my credit card was OK... RBC verified that someone was spending on my card. I dont think I would call the 1-800-711-9946 number back, just call number on your credit card so that they can stop the charges!!!

I too got a suspicious call from that number, first at home (which I hung up on, it sounded so odd), then the next day at work.  I never heard that call, the message was relayed to me.  Instead of calling the suspicious number, I called the number on the back of the card and spoke with a rep who told me they were, in fact, trying to get in touch with me over a billing, which I believe was a legitimate charge by my cable provider.  (I actually get calls from VISA semi-regularly, perhaps every two months, questioning transactions, but it's never been an actual breach of security.)   I asked the woman if that 800-711-9946  number was their number.  She didn't recognize the number, but looked it up.  She said she believed it was, in fact, registered to VISA but couldn't tell me what department.  I told her they shouldn't have ANY automated numbers asking customers to input personal information.  It's a ridiculous breach of security, and they're asking for trouble.  And they should be able to tell me what department a number is coming from.  Regardless, whether the number is legitimate or not, the advice of simply calling back the number on the back of your card, as many here have suggested, is what is sensible.

Yes, this automated call was from the Royal Bank but I did NOT call 800-711-9946 but went online to get direct number for the Royal Bank Fraud Dept.  They had the auto-call info registered that it had indeed happened. My card had been compromised in another country just after midnight last night....all is now cleared up and the acct closed and a new card is "in the mail". Whew, a little unnerving esp at holiday shopping time!

The problem is that Caller ID can be faked. The number may be real, but that does not mean the caller is. NEVER give out personal, or financial information on a call you did not make. Use a number from the phone book, back of credit card, or statement. Do not call back numbers left to you in an email, fax, or text.

Scam.  I phoned RBC directly to ask about this because the message sounded suspicious, and they confirmed this is NOT an RBC number.  When real RBC security calls you, it'll be a live person on the other end of the line, not an autodial robot (this has happened to me to confirm online purchases).

If you receive this call, hang up and call RBC back directly to check on the security of your account or credit card.

This number is legit. I got a call from it earlier and didn't realize. In the meantime I went on to my online banking and saw that there were a number of charges against my credit card that I did not make. I called the number on the back of my credit card and spoke to RBC. They told me they had placed a hold on my account because they noticed and didn't think they were mine.

I checked the messages on the phone and sure enough there was one from RBC.

If in doubt, don't call the number the message or person gives you, call the bank or Company itself and verify.

I just got a call like this and did not know what to think based on half the posts saying it was legit and half saying it was a scam. I did not call this number but the number on the back of the card and they confirmed that the call I got was legit. A restaurant I went to had to manually input my card due to issues with their internet, so RBC saw that as suspicious. I confirmed it was a legit expense.

It was RBC trying to validate a purchase of mine (an auto-renew purchase)

you idiots who said this was a scam could have cost me more trouble. I thought it was after reading this site and ignored it for a couple of days. thought i would double check and i logged in today and my platinum card had a few unauthorized $1 charges on it from halfway around the world.

i called the number on the royal bank website to be sure and this is their number. so if you are concerned about it being a phishing scam, please do review your statements anyway and call the number on the back of your card

I received an automated voice mail from the number above.  Like most of the cautious users here I called the number on the back of my card, NOT the number on the message.  I talked to Customer service who indicated that there HAD been suspicious activity on my card, which we were able to verify.  This was a manual transaction, which means someone had the stamp (numbers) on the card, but not the pin or physical access to the chip.

The perpetrator placed a tiny transaction on the card and reversed it.  If the scammers then called and left an automated message, and I returned the call  to the above number they would be able to claim there had been suspicious transactions, and indeed I may have been able to see the transaction from my online account.  This would have left them in prime condition to pump me for more personal info.

While RBC may or may not (odds are on NOT), be using this number legitimately to call clients in case of suspicous transactions, it will always be best practice to call the number on the back of your card.

I received a call from this number (1-800-711-9946) today, first on my cellphone and then at work.  Cellphone call I just ignored as I figured it was a telemarketer. The second call to my work I picked up, as I was curious how a telemarketer would get that number (I work for the federal government and solicitation calls seldomly make it through). Automated message asked me to verify my postal code. I hung up and searched the number and came across this chat.

I chose to call the number on the back of my VISA card as recommended by one of the commenters in this chat, even though I wasn't sure it was RBC or credit card related.  Spoke to a rep. and verified that in fact the above number is an RBC (Royal Bank of Canada) number related to their credit card fraud/security department. Just prior to calling, I had actually logged into my online banking and noted a purchase from JC Penney in Palo Alto, Texas for $5.40 yesterday.  I live in Toronto and was at work (and I don't make online purchases - at least few and far between).

Bottomline is: you don't have to take my word for it, but follow the above advice if you are unsure - call a legitimate RBC phone number as indicated on any of your RBC issued cards (credit, banking, etc.) and talk to a "real" person at RBC to verify your information.  Better safe than sorry!  Hopefully this posting will help clear up some of the confusion and at best better inform anyone how deal with such matters appropriately.

Cheers all!!!

I wanted to assure people that I just called rbc back after receiving a phone call from the number posted the 18007119946  and it is lagit.

It's for the fraud department and I would recomend if you are suspicious still about calling the number, do what I did and use another number your comfortable with to call your bank and have them transferr you to the visa fraud department. Thats what I did

Deal with your phone call as I did as the call is serious and has to deal with fraud. My call was because some one in tokyo fraudulently used out visa card to purchase and open up accounts with.

Hope that helps assure you.

I received a call from this numbe today, after reading Scott's post, I decided to call the number at the back of my credit card. they confirmed the call was from RBC security indicating that there was an irregular activity using my credit card. After some verificatin questions, they asked me if I did the foresaid purhase. I think there are some website in their alert list. It raises a security issue if it's a first time purchase on those websites. Glad I called them (otherwise my card will be suspended) and Thanks to Scott.

Tell us all about it, chump.  As if anyone who got a call they thought was real would keep looking it up here on an unknown caller site to tell everyone about how they got a real call from the bank.  Idiot.

Part of a fraud campaign targeting numerous financial institutions.  Note the pattern of shill postings all claiming the number is real - an obvious giveaway.

The large number of phony posts claiming the call is real come from some con artists spamming the site to try to fool people.  There is a similar pattern to other fake calls claiming to be from Chase, Citibank, Bank of America, US Bank, Wells Fargo, RBC, PayPal, etc. all with the same shill postings:

I called the RBC number on the back on my card when I received this call. According to the RBC guy I spoke to, it's their Fraud department and if something fishy is happening with your account, this is the number that calls you. I had a pre-authorization charge from a company on mine and they were just calling to verify it was legit. Even though this number is legit, NEVER call any unfamiliar 1-800 number relating to a credit card or anything financial! Just call your bank directly!!! Better to be safe than sorry!!!!

Received an automated call from this number claiming to be RBC Automated Security, on both my work phone and cell phone, requesting that I call back immediately. Called the RBC number on the back of my credit card instead to talk to a real person, jumped through the usual security question hoops and it ended up being a legitimate security concern about an online purchase I'd just made. Gave it the okay and that was the end of that.

Questioned the man about why this number wasn't listed on the RBC website and he didn't really have a good answer; there are several different automated calling machines, so it won't always be the same number which contacts you. Super safe, RBC...
