Yup, they offered me help by telling me I could pay over 300 a month instead of over 200 a month, so how does that help me make the payments!! AND TELL ME WHERE THE HECK IS  MY BAILOUT!!!!!  Guess cause we are the little people struggling to make ends meet and not a giant corporation making billions we are not entittled to a "bailout"!!!! That's fair!! NOT!!!!

This number belongs to Great Lakes EDU. This is a student loan collections company. They have called my home SIX times in the last two weeks and never leave a message. - I do NOT have a student loan and have NEVER had a student loan. I was fortunate to be able to pay for my school as I worked while going to school. Took me 7 years to graduate, but I had NO school debt when I got out.

I finally called this number and spoke with an associate. I told him that I have NEVER had a student loan in my entire life. - He DID find my number in their database, but could not find anything about me having an account with them or with anyone else for that matter. He agreed to remove my phone number from their calling list.

I have to disagree with this...my mom has a student loan with them for my brother and she has called them numerous times and they will not help her at all...they will not lower her payments, they will not give her any help. All they do is harass...so calling them to have them work with you doesn't work...

I HATE HOW AMERICAN CITIZENS CAN NOT GET ANY HELP WITH STUDENT LOANS BUT YET WE HAVE IMMIGRANTS THAT JUST GET TO THIS COUNTRY AND GET ALL THE HELP WITH NO QUESTIONS ASKED. IT DOESN'T MATTER LOANS SHOULD BE GIVEN TO STUDENTS THAT ACTUALLY WANT TO BETTER THEMSELVES, NOT TO THOSE THAT AREN'T GRATEFUL FOR THE HELP.
SINCERELY A FRUSTRATED STUDENT.

Call me sporadically and I logged on to their page once to see if there was something I'm missing. Even their own website says I don't have a loan with them. I just ignore it

I feel you guys.  My loans were originated by Great Lakes and serviced by them until 2009 when Dictator Obama proclaimed by edict that only the government can issue and service student loan debt.  My loans were transferred to Sallie Mae but Great Lakes calls me when Sallie Mae can't.

I owe close to $50k for my Masters degree.  I've never really been able to make payments because the interest rate on my loans in 7.5% making my monthly payment well over $400.  I have tried to apply for income-based and graduated repayment plans but don't qualify because my income is "too high."  My husband and I make a combine $55,000 year.  He was unemployed the last year and a half leaving me responsible for all of our bills and mortgage.  My husband also owes about $40k and together our student loans would exceed $700/month if we were able to pay them.  Do you think they care?  Absolutely not. Reduced payments are entirely based on gross wages excluding your other obligations. Some consideration is given to total household stodent loan debt - but not much.

I took the time to write my congressman and senators urging them to support HR 4170 - the Student Loan Forgiveness Act - introduced by Hansen Clarke (D-CT).  Frankly, I want to repay my loans.  In no way do I believe that my education should have been "free."  But I do feel like more should be done to cap the interest rate for pre-2009 student loans at less than 3% and that monthly payments should be limited to no more than $350 or 5% of monthly NET income (not gross, before-tax income), whichever is less PER HOUSEHOLD.  Additionally, the time permitted for repayment should be strecthed to 30 years and individuals should have the right to renegotiate their loan terms or "refinance" just like they would with any other kind of debt.  Finally, private (non-Stafford) loans should also be permitted for consolidation.

Call or write your congressman and senators.  This is the ONLY WAY we'll get change.

It is the Great Lakes Repayment Solutions Department... probably for a student loan that is overdue!  You can always give them a call back, or if you don't want to talk on the phone, they do have an "online" chat option if you go to their website!

I got the call too. We have no outstaning loans, other than our mortgage. We also have excellent credit. Calls my cell phone. Everyone who knows me knows I work at home and I rarely use my cell, so they always call my land line. Unless I am away from home, I never even answer my cell.

Great Lakes. I'm unemployed and literally eating ramen to survive but they still call 3-5 times per day. Also they call about 3-6 other people loosely associated with me every day "looking" for me to discuss "options."  These options include paying them a few thousand dollars, borrowing money from family, or making a credit card payment. How the hell are these "options?"   As if getting a doctorate level degree and being unemployed working jobs that I could have gotten with a HS degree wasn't bad enough, I also have the embarrassment of everyone I know getting calls from student loan debt collectors while I sit in a dark, cold room (because I'm too poor to pay a lot in utes) avoiding the phone every other hour. I get so many calls and voicemails from them, that if I don't delete my messages every few hours, my voicemailbox will be at capacity and someone trying to actually offer me a job won't be able to leave a voicemail.

At this point, because Great Lakes have called all my relatives and family friends, I'm ashamed to see any of them this holiday, so I'm making up some BS "I'm sick" excuse to avoid everyone and staying home.

Instead of graduating top 1% of my undergraduate class and getting a doctorate degree, if I stayed at home and slept that last 10years, I'd be so much further ahead than I am now.

Just because you talk to them, great lakes, does not mean they are willing to help a person out. I have tried multiple times to work something out, but they don't accept what I can offer. I am struggling too, like most folks these days. My husband works construction so his hours are sporadic at best. That don't help the montly other bills. I have had one rude, not good English speaking female tell me to "just pay the bill already" and hung up on me. Of course, I did not get her name so couldn't follow up.

Yes, some are willing to help, but some are not!!

While their calls are harassing at best, if you log onto the Great Lakes website and talk to one of their counselors online they can be a GREAT HELP in solving your student loan debt. They always called me during my work hours which was an issue, as I don't answer my cell phone while at WORK.

But yes, the point is, don't be afraid to talk to them! If you're willing to work with them, they're willing to work with you!

I have a roommate who has a loan with Great Lakes. They're constantly calling my house, not willing to give out any of THEIR information, but INSIST that they talk to my roommate. I've told them countless times to stop calling, and every time they say "That's all you have to say, sir.", yet they call again within the next day or two. It's getting to be harrassment.

These are student loan collectors. By law any student loan even if 30 years old is now collectible. If you dont like this as I dont, contact your Congresspersons to get this oppressive law overturned. 11 USC 523(a)(8) and the Higher Education Amendment of 1998. There is no reason why student loans should be treated so harshly when the govt wastes billions in Iraq and other endeavors, forgives loans to foreign nations, and lets people negotiate their unpaid taxes down. Why are student borrowers more criminal or undeserving? Answer that! The good news is you can treat collectors on student loans the same as any other collector. Send them a cease and desist and demand for proof letter so they will shut up. It works but you will just see another CA pick up the slack about 6 months later at which time you can do the same thing. Eventually the govt will try to garnish your wages. Dont let that happen. Fight them every step of the way!

I received a call on my cell phone at 8:46 p.m. on 8/5/08, while out dining.  I have never had a loan with them.  I have never given the number to anyone but friends and family.  A call came shortly before from 1-612-548-2001, which appears to also be connected with Great Lakes Higher Education.
