Same story. Interestingly though, there was no caller-id number logged at the time this voice message was left. The message did say it was the Discover Card Fraud Prevention services and they wanted to verify whether we wrote out a Discover check and to call 800.753.9740 by 2 PM Eastern the next day. Instead of calling 800.753.9740, I called the real DISCOVER fraud prevention, and there is no check, and they don't have a record of 800.753.9740 as a company number. They consider it a fraud too. Since there was no caller-id number logged, I wonder if the message was actually electronically delivered to the CenturyLink voicemail system somehow without actually calling our phone.

It's legitimately from Discover.

I received the same automated message.
I then called Discover directly (using the # on the back of the card)
I then spoke with an account manager; who then confirmed the number and then connected me directly to that number.
At which point I confirmed that the check was indeed written by me.

Received the same call from 1-800-753-9740. I called Discover Card and spoke with their customer service, they do not have a phone number of 1-800-753-9740. I then called the 1-800-753-9740 number and talked to a supervisor (after refusing to give any personal information). She stated they were based in New Albany, OH.

It's either a PHISHING operation, or Discover don't know what's going on in their own company...

I recieved an automated call similar to the above. What raised my concern was it said to push 1 if the card holder was available, I pressed 1 and it didn't recognize it. The message just kept looping then said to call 1-800-754-9740. I called the number on the back of my Discover Card. Talked to a person who said that there was no log of anyone having called me minutes before. Was transferred to the Fraud Dept. They verified that the number was not one of their numbers, and that anytime they contact a customer that it is recorded. There was no current record on my account of Discover trying to contact me or anyone at Discover reviewing my account. The person said that they thought it was a possible scam looking for info.... I asked them to pass the number on to whoever in fraud dept. investigates these things. It's a 800 number, it should be traceable.

Rec'd phone call from what claimed to be FRAUD PROTECTION Branch of DISCOVER CARD as to whether I had written a check for $651. It asked me to press NO or YES. I pressed nothing. I didn't trust the message.

I received an automated voice message on my phone asking me to call this number before 2pm Eastern time tomorrow to verify a Discover convenience check that I used a couple of days ago.  Being wary, I called the phone number on the back of my card to ask about this.  They connected me to Fraud Prevention who said the number was legitimate, but that they would be happy to help me verify the use of the check by calling the number on the card as well.  So, either way, CALL Discover if you get this message and used a balance transfer, convenience check, or cash advance check.  Whether you use the number on the back of your card and ask for Fraud Prevention or call 1-800-753-9740, it is legitimate and for your own security.  To those before me who said they know it is a scam because they don't have a Discover Card, did it ever occur to you that SOMEONE out there has stolen your identity and they are trying to use your info to get a card?  Most credit apps contain balance transfer checks.  If someone besides you tries to cash the check, aren't you glad Discover is calling to verify the information?  I personally appreciate that Discover has my back and makes these courtesy calls.  They may be annoying, but are necessary with the world as messed up as it is.

I got a call from these people at dinnertime.  Used my full name and said it was Discover Fraud Prevention, calling to verify a recent check on my Discover Card.  I don't have this card and never did, so I know it's a scam.

I got the same call from 1-800-753-9740.  I immediately called the Discover card number on the back of my card. I never return a call with a number before I check out that number or give info over the phone. I always ask for a return number then call the credit card company to verify directly.  This call is a phishing call. They want your information and will sometimes offer you better rates just to get that information. DO NOT EVER ANSWER THESE CALLS WITH INFORMATION, OR RETURN THESE CALLS TO GIVE INFORMATION.  CALL YOUR CARD CO DIRECTLY.

I recd the same type of call as the previous folks about 10 minutes ago. It came up on my caller id as "unavailable", so I called the regular service center # on my card. I verified I had written a check on this card acct. I then nsuggested to the person wity the call center, that they should consider better id on the caller id system, such as "discover fraud dept" to lessen suspicion of the caller. He thanked me for the suggestion, & said he would pass it on to his superiors!!

I got a call from this #, the day after I wrote a Discover Card Check.  I called the # back, did not have to give any personal information (was automated, did not talk to a person), they had the amount of the check, I just had to push a # confirming that I had written the check.

It's legit. I had a partial message from them tonight. (My son had stopped the machine before it could finish.) I checked the number on this site and realized that it must have been about a Discover check I had written yesterday. I called the number and all I had to do was verify that I had indeed written it; they already knew the amount.

I received the same call moments ago.  Called Discover to verify.  Told them the call was confirming a Discover check, which I had indeed written.  They transferred me to the correct department.  This number is indeed from Discover's Fraud Protection.  They confirmed all of my details and also informed me that they will see a Discover check before the main Discover # will.  I would still call Discover's # on the back of my card in the future to validate any future calls, just to be safe.  They said to be sure if it concerns a Discover check to let them know so they can refer me to the proper department.

I got a call same as above.  I checked the Discover web site and this was not the fraud protection number plus we don't even have a discover card.  It's very suspicious to me.  I would call Discovers other official number 1-800-DISCOVER before giving out any info

I got a voice mail from same number (800-753-9740). Said it was Discover Card Fraud Prevention services. They were verifying if I had written a Discover check and its amount. I had. No problem. They thanked me for verifying. It's part of their efforts to prevent credit card fraud. Seems like a good idea to me.

I got a message from this number on my phone saying it was the Discover Card Fraud Prevention services and they wanted to verify whether we wrote out a Discover check.  Since we don't have this type of Discover card anymore, and haven't for quite some time, we were suspicious.  Especially since we have heard about things like this in the national news media where people are using bogus information with electronic recordings, etc. this to commit identity theft.  We called the number on the back of our credit card, and they said they had made no such call from the company we do have a card with, and that our account showed a zero balance.  The message they left on my phone said "to call no later than 2 PM Eastern by the next business day." and that they were taking calls from 7 AM to Midnight Eastern time.  We gave no personal information to this number, and we were wondering if there was a group that investigated whether this number was legitimate or fraudulent.
