If you had bothered to read what you were signing you would have known about the data charges. All smartphones use data. They were designed to do so. Verizon isn't going to just give you data.

Go ahead and switch carriers. If you think this issue is specific to Verizon just don't pay your Bill there either. If you weren't the account owner how would you know the payment was late?

To all concerned:
Thanks for all of your postings as they helped me track this down.

The group that makes these obnoxious phone calls IS part of Verizon.
I'm told by Verizon customer service that it is not Customer Service but some kind of sales group that is trying to sell more
of everything and uses any excuse to call.

To prevent these calls one has to do a CPNI block on the number(s) on your account.
I'm told that doing this block prevents these calls.
Supposedly there is a place on the paper bill with a check-box to put this CPNI block into place.
I use paperless billing so I did not see it.  It still may be there but I missed it.

I hope that this helpful to all.

I have received two calls from these people, both times caller ID came up as "Debt Collection Scam". They always leave a message with this 800 phone number and it is not Verizon as I have contacted Verizon directly and they do not have this 800 number. The caller ID is interesting in that these people don't even have the intelligence to make up a believable caller ID.

Event Reminder
My son got the call, even though my number, not his, is the main account. Every few years I miss a notice, and instead of texting me like they usually do, they call one of the other phones on the account instead of my phone. I called cust service and asked them to please express my preference to call only my number and not the other numbers on the account. I am wondering if other people here that are not Verizon customers maybe have a number that used to be a Verizon number as a secondary number on somebody else's account, and they likewise called the 3rd or 4th ex-number instead of their main number?

My husband received a voicemail to return call to 1-800-754-0961.  I called *611 on my Verizon phone.  Verified my balance and spoke to financial services. Then I called the 1-800-754-0961 from office phone and it is a verizon phone number calling to set up payment arrangement on outstanding balance.

They call and say they are from a collection agency and want to verify my name and address and SSI and when I refused and questioned who they were they say I owe a bill and I can call them back at the number they just called me on. I told them OK and hung up. NEVER give out this information over the phone believe me a true collection agency has all this information before they call you.

Same lady and number called back 2 weeks latter asking for me by name and I reminded her it didn't work last time it is not going to work now and she hung up.

I recieved a call from this number. I heard the lady say it was collections, then asked for my address and date of birth. She said she couldn't tell me the company until they had all my info. Told her she needed to tell me the company first. Then she said if I would listen instead of talking I would've heard her the first time. I told her when she developed customer service skills to call me back and hung up.

It is VERIZON - sort of. VERIZON like many large companies, in a cost cutting measure has farmed out their collections activities to third party companies, who in many cases can be VERY aggressive, since they earn a %age off the amounts they collect. Don't bother calling VERIZON to complain, the dissatisfaction is just a cost of business for them, even with complaints & customers switching carriers, it is still cheaper for them to pay SOMEONE ELSE to call on & collect from delinquent accounts. They will call from multiple different locations/cities/phone #'s in one day since it works on a phone bank Que system, a worker in a call center's computer automatically dials the next delinquent phone # & if gets a live body the call center rep picks up, if not, it calls the next # on their list. Pay by web or in store only, really the only safe way anymore, even if they 'turn' you off you will still be able to RECEIVE calls & make texts in & out on your phone for a while before they totally shut it off for lack of payment.
