IT WAS A LEGIT CALL FROM CHASE ON MINE. I didn't call this number back, but rather called back the number on the back of my credit card with Chase. I had just done a balance transfer with a convenience check a few days earlier and they were calling to verify that it was me, since it was for a large amount. ALWAYS call the number on the back of your card folks! ;)

It was the Chase Fraud dept that called me.  A couple days ago I had used one of their convenience checks for a large amount >$2000.  So I called this number back with the idea of not giving them any information they didn't already have.  I didn't have to give them ANY information or talk to anyone.  it was just an automated voice that provided me with the exact amount of the check I had written and to whom it was written.  All I did was enter "1" to confirm.   If I had entered "2" to dispute it, I imagine I would have been transferred to a live person.

Said they were Chase Fraud detection, I was to call back 800 766 4908 with my account number, that a check had been used to access my account. Reference number was very fishy, like with other people--30000.
I called Chase Customer Support and they checked my account--no suspicious activity. Therefore, this was a phishing attempt to get my account number. Fraud.
If you get one of these messages, I advise calling Chase directly, using the number provided on the back of your credit card.

This appears to be a legitimate call from Chase Bank.

The caller left a voice message concerning my wife's credit card account and asked that she call them back with a certain reference number.

I advised her not to call back to the number on the CallerID but to call the customer service number on the back of her credit card.  I also advised her not to use the reference number she had been given, but just to ask them why they called and what the problem was with the account.

It turns out, just like with previous posts here, she had used one of the relatively low interest convenience checks they had sent her, and they just wanted to verify, for security reasons, that she had used that check.

Chase Bank is very good about monitoring the security of their accounts.  Last year, they put an immediate hold on that credit card when someone made fraudulent purchases from another state.  Due to their diligence and their quickly contacting us, they put a stop to several thousand dollars worth of fraudulent purchases that were made by someone who had stolen the credit card number.

If you receive a call like this, simply call the customer service number on the credit card, and you can be assured that you're not returning a call from a scammer.

They just called tonight, same thing. I JUST reactivated a new card 3 days ago as part of the Target breach so I was thinking, how could I possibly already have fraud?   I called Chase back at the number listed on the web site and the rep said that was NOT chase's number.  I can't believe the number of posters swearing it is legit.  WHENEVER you are contacted, play it safe, call the 1800 number on the back of your card.  Then you will always be safe :) .

This is a number for Chase fraud prevention. I was pretty sure it was legitimate since I had recently written a check against my Chase VISA, but I called the regular customer service number just to be sure. They confirmed the fraud department wanted verbal authorization for the check and instructed me to return the call. I'm not sure why they give you the reference number, though, as they never asked for it. It was just a recording giving the payee and amount of the check, and to press 1 if I did write it and 2 if I didn't. Maybe they need it if you call from a different phone number than the one they have on file..

I was suspicious for the same reasons everyone posted, but called and was careful about what info I gave until they gave me enough to convince me they were legit. It really was Chase verifying a check I'd written, it was legit, but they definitely need to improve their format. Still, I would suggest on anything like this, call the number on the back of your credit card instead of the one in the message you recieved.

I just called back and double checked this call is from the chase credit card.
I don't know what some of people above had but to me it was a call from the chase.
Like someone said, just in case you have a chase account and recently deposited their checked ( I did) then you will get this call. In fact, I appreciate when they call me (not just chase only, but others as well).

Same message confirming the use of a convenience check, automated system asking for account information. Called the number on the card and it turns out it is Chase Fraud Prevention.  I pointed out Chase advises not to give out account information over the phone and then requests just that. At any rate it's probably best to be sure and just go through the number on the card rather then responding to phone messages , this is a legitimate message that could easily be imitated by a phishing scheme .

This is a legitimate Chase number. I wrote an access check several days ago on a credit card I haven't used in some time and when I called this number back, it recognized my phone number electronically and an automated voice asked if I had written a check for $xxx and made out to Mr. xxxxxxxxx. It said to hit 1 if yes and 2 for no. I hit 1 and it thanked me for the business and the call was ended. I gave no information at all.

FRAUD - PHISHING attempt
I got this call and do not have a Chase credit card. I do have a checking account, so I called Chase and they verified that their fraud department did not call me.
DO NOT give your account number to anyone who calls you.
To check if there is a problem, call the phone number on the back of your credit card.
ONLY GIVE YOUR ACCOUNT NUMBER WHEN YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE CALLING.

Part of a fraud campaign targeting numerous financial institutions.  Note the pattern of shill postings all claiming the number is real - an obvious giveaway.

The large number of phony posts claiming the call is real come from some con artists spamming the site to try to fool people.  There is a similar pattern to other fake calls claiming to be from Chase, Citibank, Bank of America, US Bank, Wells Fargo, RBC, PayPal, etc. all with the same shill postings:

I don't know what any of these people on this thread are talking about that are saying that this is a legit chase number. It's NOT A LEGIT CHASE CALL. They must be a part of the scam. I also received a call this morning from the robo voice from this number saying that I had fraudulent charges on my chase account. I was instructed to call back this number with a reference number I was given. I did not call this number back after reading these posts and decided to call the chase number on the back of my card. The woman I spoke with let me know that there were no fraudulent charges on my card, my account had not been flagged, and they have not sent out any texts or calls regarding my account. She also informed me that many other people have also called about the exact same issue and IT IS A SCAM. DO NOT CALL THIS NUMBER BACK. You should either report it to chase or just ignore it.

I deposited a convenience check yesterday then today I receive a call from 1800-766-4908. This is a real Chase phone number. The automatic system just asked me to confirm the amount of the transaction by pressing 1. No personal or account information is required. Actually, Chase's customer service is excellent. Thanks.

This is a legit number. They called me to make sure I had authorized a check written to my business account. After I completed the call, I called the number on the back of my card and the Chase employee verified that a call had just taken place and confirmed the notes in my account were from a Chase employee.

also, chase is exactly the number a scammer would want to pretend to be. duck hunters don't use elephant whistles, right? they use duck whistles to....fool ducks to come over.

bottom line, can't always assume the number on caller id is really that number. it might be, it might not.

a phishing scam can pretend to be a legitimate number. For instance, I can find a program to change my phone's identity. That way when I call someone, instead of my number showing on caller ID- I have a different number showing.

So, just b/c you get a call from 800-766-4908 it may not be from one place. It could be legit, OR it could be a scammer.

btw, I've worked in call centers. we don't always know every number for a corporation. easiest answer is always "No". If you're not sure, "No" is often safer than "yes".

so use your brain. when they call do they want your personal info?
* yes? they're a scammer.
* no? they just want to know (Yes/No)  if you spent a certain amount at a certain place? probably legit.

wtf can they do with Yes or No? and before you come up with a retarded answer, I've also worked in a fraud department and also collections. there isn't s*** you can do with just "yes" or "no".

I got a call from 402-220-4013 saying someone wrote a check in my name and asked me to call back to 1800-766-4908. So i called the 1 800 number and the lady on the other end sounded like Paskitani or Indian asking me my last 4 of social and birthday...It sounded fishy so I called the number on the back of my card. The representative said the fraud department DIDN'T call me. She said the 1800-766-4908 is a fraudulent number. Beware people.

I received a call from 402.220-4013 (number on my caller id) and they left a message stating that they were from the Fraud Department at Chase Bank.  They stated to call this 800 number back and to use a reference code that was given. I had recently written one of those convenience checks and they wanted to verify that I had.  Being suspicious about it, I looked up the number and there were mixed opinions about it (some stating scam & others stating legit).  Then I looked up this 800 number (the call back number given on the message) and I got mixed reviews as well.  I just decided to call the customer service number on the back of the card (different number) to get more information.  The gentleman I spoke to stated that I had been called regarding the activity and it was legit.  I did not ask the man to verify the two numbers (the 402 number or the 800 call back number).  I was able to provide security information and questions to the man and he was able to handle the issue for me.  He then stated there was no need to call this 800 number.

Legit call from Chase Bank.

This is a legitimate call from Chase Bank Fraud Dept. I called a different customer service number (from their website) and was informed it was a legitimate call to confirm activity in my account. Glad they called to verify.
