We received a a call from this # saying it was in reference to a Sallie Mae loan.  They also called my neighbor at another phone home When we called back 1st thing they asked for was my  SS and phone #. Then they said there were calling about my daughter and also wanted her phone # and address.  I informed them they should have all this info on file if they are truly Sallie Mae.  When I asked them for their name and location, they gave me "Timothy 14 line 835"  & put me on hold. Strange waited a few and finally hung up Do not give out any personal information especially your SS#!!!!! This is definitely a scam from 800-766-7242

Got a call from them today. Did not call back. This is not the way companies ask for references. Not with a computer voice on an old landline with your name mangled. And friends always clear it first. Not a blind call.

Got a call from this number today saying i was a reference on someone's student loan, i asked those i know who are students if they listed me and they said no and even if they had why would they call me. Said they were open from 8AM to 9PM and to please call them.  I feel they should of at least said who they were with if they wanted me to call back.  

These people call several times a week.  They claim to be Sallie Mae, but I have never done business with Sallie Mae.  Tried to call them back and got another recorded message telling me to call them back.  Baloney.  Best thing is to report the number to the DO NOT CALL service at 888-382-1222, and to your State Attorney General's office for telemarketing and telephone fraud complaints.

I have had it with this Sallie Mae outfit. We get multiple pre-recorded calls daily. On the rare occasion that someone actually is on the line I cheerfully say " Hello How are you today" As soon as they respond my next question is " What are you wearing?" "  Does the carpet match the drapes? "  "Do you like Chinese food?  Would you like to Chow Mine?" Each and every time the caller speaks they get an additional question. Eventually they get offended and hang up, but hey, at least I wasted their time!!

Funny part is despite the fact that we DO NOT have any loans with them, nor any credit card dept they still refuse to remove our number from their list!!

Another harassing call claiming to be my good friends at Sallie Mae, only they're bothering my parents, trying to find me. How I managed to vanish from these idiots is a mystery to me. I was getting constant robocalls from another SM number, and I solved the problem by blocking it, apparently erasing any info they had on me, both through the mail and by phone. Instead of sending mail at my residence, where I've been harassed by them for 10 years, they're sending mail to my dad. I returned their mail with "refused" written on at, and must've ruined all communication via mail.
My dad will not answer or respond to their calls and my mom got tired of it at her place so she took one.
She said she knew me but that was all, and she was uncomfortable giving this foreign gentleman info over the phone. She said he was caught off guard when she said she could not help them. This bozo then asked for her SS number, which she told him she was not about to give him. They've left both of them messages claiming their names are listed as contacts on my loan. Given time, those scumbags can find virtually anyone from a series of numbers, yet they're harassing my parents, trying to find me? Get with the program you bozos.

I don't care what it is. When people ask you to leave them alone, you should probably heed the warning. Not a good way to drum up new customers if you treat them this way. Stop Calling. If you get the wrong person, update your file so you don't harass the same individual day in and day out.

A person from 800-766-7242 has called several times.  They requested my social security number and said I was named as a reference on a student loan.

Well, they left a message for my 88 year-old father-in-law who passed away a year ago saying his name was on a student load document so that should answer the legitimacy question.  

My daughter & I both have Sallie Mae loans. I do auto deductions for repayment so they
have no need to call me. My daughter is still in school so is exempt from re-payment until she leaves school or graduates. Sallie Mae has no reason to call her either. Got a message from this number identifying themselves as Sallie Mae with "calling for-------(no name was supplied)". I called the official number I have for Sallie Mae and the first thing they ask for is my account number, not social security number. All our a ccounts are just as they should be. 800-766-7242 is not Sallie Mae.  Beware of ANYONE asking for your SS number over the phone and report unsolicited calls immediately!

Like the messages above, I got their voice mail twice.  Second time I answered.  Someone with a very thick Indian accent asked for my SS #.  I refused.  Connected me with a woman...thicker accent.  Would not answer my questions.  Asked again for my SS #, then wanted my account number.  I told them that I was giving them neither and ended the call.  Don't they know we are getting wise to this sort of scam?  I pity the people who get duped with this sort of activity.  Can the government do nothing.  They know I am getting these calls since THEY are listening.  Disturbed!

I think they may be somewhat legit. She asked me for an account number but that might just be what they do to pull up info. I told her it would not be in reference to any account that I have with them and that they called and left me a message regarding someone that had used me as a reference. She was able to tell me the name of the person who was an ex girlfriend from several years ago who is almost definitely unable to scrounge up enough money to pay a loan back between her and her current boyfriend's min wage jobs. I definitely wouldn't give them any additional information but they did not press me for any and the lady who I spoke with was very polite and stated that she removed my number from the ex's listing. I will update this if I receive any additional calls but I would agree that this appears to be legit skip-tracing.

You may be receiving calls if you are listed as a referance or information-elligible on an account. This is NOT A SCAM OR A DEBT COLLECTION it is just the department that seeks correct contact information.

Received a recorded message this morning asking to call back in regard to a loan.  I called the number and the 1st question was asking for my social security number.  when I said no, I want to know why you are calling me they said it was about a student loan that our son had.  Our son does not have a student loan with Sallie Mae, never had a loan with Sally Mae or any other company.  I asked for the supervisor and when my son got on the phone with her and said that if they were to call back again that he would call the FBI & his attorney they said OK they have nothing to talk about and hung up.  This is definitely a scam.

We also got a message on our tel machine today saying it was SallieMae and that they needed us to call them right back for a "school loan reference". My wife called back, and spoke with 2 different men with Spanish accents. Along with other information, she unfortunately she gave them her SS number. I am afraid we gave this information to some type of scammers. So a heads-up to everyone out there - beware of the number 800 766 7242.

Sallie Mae keeps leaving messages about a student loan reference. I called and received an operator who answered Sallie Mae? she asked me for my reference number? I told her that they keep calling our house leaving messages to call them. They asked for my phone number, and said they had no record of calling me and would put a note in there file that we were called incorrectly by there  dialing system. She then apologized and said Good Bye....     I am not holding my breath.  but I will post if they call again.

This number identified themselves as Sallie Mae, left a message on my mother's answering machine, told her she was a reference I had listed, that she should call this number back immediately. My mother called back, and their first question was, "what is your daughter's social security number?" My mother declined, and hung up the phone. Whoever "they" are they are NOT Sallie Mae, they would send my bills, statements, etc. through the mail, and would have no need for my social. Beware.

This is a SCAM!  The same thing happened to me. Only I answered the call, the woman said I was named as a reference for a Sallie Mae Student loan and wanted was my social security number. I asked who the student was and she refused to answer. I told her to call the student and have the student contact me directly and that all future contact must be through the student.

After that I called Sallie Mae at 1-888-2-SALLIE (888-272-5543) to ask about this loan serving department. A woman named Lisa looked up my phone number and assured me there are no student loans associated with my home telephone. She put a block on my phone number from any future tela-marketing from Sallie Mae.
She also stated that Sallie Mae is NOT associated with 800-766-7242.  The only 800 number they have is for lenders, all the others #s are 877#s. Again, this is a Sallie Mae SCAM!

I received a call from this number today and right away they wanted my Social Security number.  I was transferred three times when I refused.  They identified themselves as Sallie Mae and said someone had used me as a reference for a loan but they needed my SS number.  I got the woman's name, whose accent was so strong I could hardly understand her.  I finally hung up and called Sallie Mae, and they informed me that they had nothing on file requesting any information.  I asked them about the number that I had spoke with and they had no information about that number.  Beware!!!  800-766-7242
