Paula, what happened with the AXA Equitable claim? My son just received one of these letters and we are questioning the legitimacy of this letter also.

I returned the call to a David, receptionist answered as AXA Mutual of New York, David was searching for descendants of my father, new his birth and death dates and that of my mother, said there was a fund on which I and my sister were beneficiaries, asked only for a mailing address and said info would be forth coming.  A search of AXA Mutual of New York failed to show this as a contact number .  I intend to contact the "real" AXA as a follow up.

Received same type call from same number - in reference to my husband's grandfather (passed many years ago). My husband is named after his grandfather. Told Michelle (caller) this seemed very odd as the man passed many years ago. She said she understood but part of their company used to be located in NY. This part of the company hadn't processed these insurance policies and given the beneficiaries their legitimate settlements to the life insurance policies. The state of NY told AXA to clean these up or the monies would be turned over to the state. We'll see......

I just received a letter regarding my mother who passed 25 yrs ago. Same as the other stories asked when she died, when she was born etc. I was 15 when she passed and I now am 41. I thought this was very strange. However they did not ask for any of my personal information, said they would send paperwork within 4 weeks, and that I might have to come up with a death certificate. Told me they found out my mother passed through the Social Security Admin.

I did not get a call, but I got a letter about someone's life insurance policy.  They want to make sure if he is dead or alive and whether I am next of kin.  I don't recognize the name of the person at all.

It is totally legit.  Go on the company website and call their number there.  It is slightly different from the above number.  That is a different office.  They now do cross-checking and otherwise the money they owe you goes to the state.  It is totally legit.  Look them up on line.

This is not a scam. I too was very Leary especially after reading all these posts. I received a second call about two weeks later from NC and there was a life insurance policy my deceased father had. It was 10.00 + interest. Not much but it's not a trick or scam

We got a call re my wife's father who passed away 30 years ago saying there is potentially a policy outstanding. Very weird that no one knew about it and it's taken 30 years to come up. They said they will send paperwork like others have said. Has anyone actually received any funds from any of these policies?

I received a call and did a reverse look up as I did on this page to see who I was dealing with. Further research, it turns out I have seen this company before because my family has used there services in the past. This is a legit company with legit business. Very important to return the calls. In my case unclaimed funds that will go to the State if family was not found.

I received the same type of call referencing my deceased husband who died in 2004.  I went to their website, found an email address under their Customer Service > Consumer Protection > How to Report Fraud.  I sent an email and received a prompt response from Claudia O'Donnell, Manager of Investigations Dept.  I called her and she said it was legit.  They did not ask for money.

I recived a letter in the mail regaurding everything that was mentioned above, same spill, didn't ask for anything other then birth date and death date.said i too would be reciving paper work in about 3 weeks. My concern to those of you that sent in the paper work did that paper work want any of your personal information like your SS # or date of birth? For those of you that did send in paper work did you recive any funds? Did the policy have the ammount that you are suposto get on it? I asked questions like when was the policy opened and how much was policy worth and they told me all of those questions would be answered in the paper work. Was it? I think everyone is lery because there are so many scammers out there. Please for any of you that have followed up on this would you post what information you've gotten to date and anything else that might help the rest of us.  thank you!!

I went to their web site and called the customer service number asking if this number was for their company. They said yes it was and they were doing an investigation to clean up all old, unpaid claims. They transferred my call to the department that handles that. It seems to me ligit.

I read your message regarding the call from AXA Equitable. I noticed the date of your posting was in December 2011. We are now in February. Have you heard anything more from them? Did you receive paperwork in the mail? I'm curious because I got the same call a couple of days ago.

If anyone did get paperwork from AXA Equitable, would you please post the information. I really would like to know if this is a scam of some sort.

I, too, received a call from a woman named Pat at AXA Equitable who claimed that she was calling regarding an insurance policy that my mother had taken out years ago, and they wanted to pay off on it. My mother has been dead for almost 16 years. I told her that my mother had been gone for years, and I wasn't aware of any such policy. Also, why would they want to pay off on an insurance company when the premiums have not been paid for 16+ years. She said that they were just trying "to do the right thing." I was told that paperwork would arrive in 2-3 weeks which I was to complete and return. She didn't ask me for any personal information other than my address. What will happen? Who knows? Are they legitimate? For some reason, I doubt it. Things like this, receiving money out of the blue, just don't happen to me.

We received a call from this number yesterday referencing a parent that passed away in 1998.  We believe the call is legit.  Certain life insurance companies are auditing stale life insurance records, looking for situations where beneficiaries were never paid.  Coincidentally, there are major newspaper articles today regarding this same issue, albeit with different insurers - see http://www.bizjournals.com/sacramento/news/20 ... ath-master.html.

We did not have to provide any of our own personally identifiable information.  We were told that we would be sent paperwork sometime during the next month.  Since this is totally out of the blue, we have no idea what to expect.

Received a call from the above number regarding my late husband who died in 1997, wanting to send me info regarding insurance.   I'm quite sure he had no life insurance.  Have you received many complaints regarding this company or this practice?
