I have received 2 calls, one on my home phone and one on my cell. Both messages made references to student loan repayment options. It appears NELNET has changed it's callback number to 888-486-4722. In addition to the new number, they are now using automated messaging with the same female voice that is so common and therefore deceptive, leading one to think the call is legitimate. They asked for my SSN or account number to access my account---no way! I waited until the voice said I would be connected to a customer service person and I did get to speak to one. I had to ask him how to spell both his name and the name of the company because I couldn't understand what was being said. He was OK to talk to and after I told him about the calls I asked him what it was all about. I told him I am 62, have not been in school for a very long time, and certainly do not have any student loans. He replied that someone could have given my phone numbers as a reference! I wanted to know who gave them my numbers and he put me on hold for a few minutes to "research" it and came back with an "unable to find any information". He then offered to remove my name and number(s) from their calling list. I told him to go ahead. I hope this is the last I hear from them or the next step is the attorney general's office.

It's clear to me,from your duplicate responses, that 'studentloaner' must work for Nelnet.  Why would schools send a collection agency on loans that are not due until 2016?  As long as you are at least a half time student, your loans are not due until you graduate or drop out for more than six months.  I am a first year student with four years to go so there is no reason for these people to contact me for a loan that is not due.  They did say that there services would cost $25 a semester.  They want money.
This is a scam!  I have talked to my school and they do not use any collection service.  When my loan becomes due I pay the loan company directly.  You can be sure that I will be contacting my congressman and senator about this company.
Do Not give these people your information.

I did not get a call from this number, but I did receive a letter from Nelnet advising me to log in to Nelnet.com, register, and set up a payment plan to repay my student loan (that is not due).  I almost did just that, but something didn't feel right so I did some research and found this web site. I left Iowa Central Community College in May of 2010 and am currently enrolled at Purdue Calumet.  I have talked to the loan officers at ICCC twice and was informed that loans are not due because I am still attending college.  Even if I hadn't started at another college, my grace period isn't up until November.  I have pulled my loan papers from ICCC and will call them on Tuesday to find out what is going on.  To get information on your loan contact your school or go to FAFSA.

I have had my number for about 16 years.  Today I get 5 calls from this company asking to speak to someone I have never heard of.  This person did have the same last name as my married name that I got rid of 10 years ago.  So it's obvious to me that they used a very old phone book or something when I was listed as D. _______ (same last name as loser debtor) ........... so they are skip tracing the guy.  But my last name has not been that for 10 years.  I have asked every time they called to have the number removed.  But that has yet to happen.  Pay your bills people !!!!!

My mother has been receiveing calls from Nelnet looking for someone who has not lived there for over 27 years.  My mother is 73 years old and is being harrassed by these people.  I called them to have my mothers number removed from whatever account they have it linked to and they were very aggressive and rude to me too.  They told me they would continue calling my mother until we tell them where to find this person.  I believed them to be a debt collector, but they did not say who they were or why they were calling.  This is a requirement by FDCPA rules if it was for collecting a debt.  They said they were from Colorado.  When I looked them up on line, they have Nebraska information on their site.  I will be filing complaints in both states.

Everyone,

This phone number is registered with Nelnet Student Loans and is the number for their collections department.  Nelnet is a legitamite student loan service as I used them (along with a number of my classmates) for my student loans in college.  I got a call from this number and looked it up before calling it back.

I did not make my last month's loan payment, and this is why the number called me, to make sure I was going to make a payment.  Other than the occasional mistype by someone in their application, Nelnet is calling you because you are late on your bills.

This website is great for people who really want to know who called them, but then you get idiots who don't pay their bills and pretend that no one calls them for collections, then post here about how this company keeps calling them.

Again, Nelnet is a legit student loan company.  They can't talk to you about any personal information or account information until you prove to them that you are who you say you are (i.e. giving your SSN).  This is a legal obligation on their part, not because it's a scam.  Seriously, some of you people are kind of morons - if you paid your bills then you wouldn't get these phone calls (except for the 1% of people who got a phone call by mistake).

I am VERY suspecious of this company.  I would not give them any info.  They called my parents asking about my student loan, which has been paid off for over 10 years.  I called them and they were nice, but would not give me any info as to why they called without me giving them my social security number, which I of course would not give them.

The guy looked up my parents number and asked my name, which I did give (hopefully it wont come back to bite me, but it was info they seemed to already have when they called my parents).  But then his answers to my questions didnt make any sense.

His e-mail was frank.page@nelnet.net, and he gave the a company website of nelnet.com.  I asked why the website and the e-mail were different, and he had some explanation of "internal e-mail address".  I am not an IT expert, but it seemed fishy.

I called Nelnet costomer service from their website, again they wanted my SS# but I did not give it to them.  The lady tried to look up my account another way, but couldn't locate it.  I gave her the e-mail address I was given, and she looked it up in their system.  She did confirm that this person works for the company as a collector.

She told me that my parents phone# and she looked it up and another person with my same first and last name, but different middle initial, has my parents listed as a referrence.  She said that she would remove the phone number from this file.  I had her confirm that the last 3 digits of the SS# listed were different than mine, so I felt better that it was not someone using my SS#.  Might have just been an input error on my parents phone#.?????

Be careful of this company.  I dont know if they are real or not, but it sure is fishy.

Unfortunately it is not a scammer. This number is for the Recovery Depart of Nelnet, which is a student loan lender. They call anyone listed as a borrower or co-borrower on student loans. So, if you signed for someone or were listed as a reference for someone taking out a student loan and isn't paying, you will get calls. I verified this because I received a call from a number due to a title company error on a loan payoff. I refused to give my social and went straight to the regular nelnet customer service number that I have called many times. I was put on hold and transfered to the same guy who called me originally from the other number. Thus confirming that he was legit and did work for Nelnet. So try to be nice, pay what is due, or yell at whomever gave them your contact info for not being a responsible borrower.

My company received a call from this telephone # from a guy named Chuck. The call was placed to a person who no longer works for our company so I returned the call thinking it may be an opportunity for my company since the person who Chuck was looking for was a salesperson at our company. So I called Chuck at the telephone # in question here and told him that this fellow doesn't work here any more. At that point Chuck starts to ask very personal questions of me and my former employee at which point I started to ask him what exactly did he call for and he hung up. Something very suspicious going on with this company.

I recieved SEVERAL calls from this number, looking for the person(s) whom had my cell number before me.
Not only did they leave rude voicemails, but the last was a threatening voicemail as well.
NelNet is a "legit" high intrest loan company, however they are BARELY legal. It's enough to keep from getting themselves shut down, nothing more.
They removed my number from said list, as I filed a complaint with BBB, however please beware this company WILL use dirty tactics to get your info.

i just got the call almost an hour ago from this guy who sounded like he said his name is steven wolkowski or something like that. hard to hear. anyway he said he was with nelnet... I had just gotten back to my desk at work and saw i missed the call from 1-800-825-2520. checked for the phone number...unlisted/unknown... i think it's a scam already.. pretty sure of it actually. checked my email--same number he told me to call appears in an email to try to look legit. email address he has is Steve.Curran@nelnet.net which looks legit...but usually my emails have images--and don't usually list people's names other than mine.

so from there i go doing a little research here and there. found you guys posting...and then called nelnet--they said they don't have this 1-800-825-2520 listed under their list of phone numbers.

i could be wrong and this guy could be legit. but--if nelnet  wanted to get a hold of me, they know how to do it legitimately.

The person who answers the phone at 1-800-825-2520 is EXTREMELY rude.  It is quite obvious that they are "scammers".  Beware of anyone calling you from this number and asking for personal information!

So these creeps called leaving me a message on my answering machine, asking me to call them back because it was important. So I called them back because the name of their company sounded similar to a loan company that i have (they have accents so you cant clearly understand them). The first thing they ask you for is your social security number. I was like no way will i give you personal information! So I asked the man why they were calling me and they said they couldn't give me any information until i gave them mine. They are crazy if they think I'm going to give them my personal information. After arguing for a couple of minutes, I figured out that the name of the company was Melmack or something like that. I finally told them not to call me anymore because i had nothing to do with them and the man just hung up on me. (By the way, they are rude and obnoxious, no professional company would act in such a way). So 2 days go by and what happens then..they call me on my cell phone! I called back, told them to get me off their list and never to call back. The same man was rude to me and hung up on me again. Ugh! Hopefully they do not call back. If you google them, you cant find anything on them. They are not even registered to the Better Business Bureau.
