800-829-0922

Today is March 28, 2014 and I just got off the phone with the "real IRS". The notice I received stating an unusually large refund amount actually came from them but I received it because of what was filed on my 2013 tax return. The problem is that I have not filed my 2013 tax retrun yet!! I am working with them to get the scammer. The 800-829-0922 number is on the letter I received but I it is my understanding that it is bogus. I was given a laundry list of instructions to begin this proces and I won't be able to submit an electronic return this year.

*** Please do not call the number they provided, and do not give out any information. Think about it. If you call the number THEY provided, would they come straight out and say they are trying to scam you! The person on the other end is going to try convince you they are a legit IRS representative.
I also received a similar letter, and admit at a quick glance it did look official, they even had my husband's Social Security number, but upon a more careful read, you can tell it's amateur hour all the way. They wanted copies of our amended tax return documents for 2010 because they had lost their copy. We never amended our taxes for that year, so why would they have any record of an amended tax return in the first place. They claim it's perhaps due to us sending in our returns in by snail mail as well as electronically. Who sends their taxes in 2 times! Then they tell us they needed the documents back by March 21, 2013 in order to process the return properly. Mind you I received the letter today 3/04/14 a full year after the requested time they needed all the paperwork in. We already received our money back from the real IRS for the year in question. Please, Please be careful, this is a scam. They prey on your fears. I see some of you are worried, but don't let them use this to scare you into giving them information that they should never have. I wouldn't be surprise if the scamers are monitoring sites like this... I've seen some people in this blog claiming the 800 829-0922 number is a real IRS number. I've looked up the number and it's some sort of telemarketing number. Err on the side of caution and call the IRS directly. If anything alert them of what's happening and give them what information you have..

This number is legit. I got a letter saying that the IRS did not receive my 2012 return. So I called the IRS assistance number (800-829-1040) and found that the problem was real. (That's what to do if you think it's a scam -- don't call the number they give you, because in may be spoofed. Find a real number and call it.)

I used to work for the IRS and this number is real. It's the general number that anyone can call so that means even if you live in California you might end up talking to a representative who's in New York. Once you can call that number and hopefully speak to someone competent, then you depending on your issue, you can find out the specific number fit whatever department you need. But since this number is general and public scammers can easily put it on letters and emails to make themselves look more credible so please be careful.

This is an IRS phone number. It is listed on several forms and on the IRS.gov website. It is not a "scam" per se, but you may be better off if it were. When I called the number the phone system quoted a 30 minute hold time. It turned out to be an hour and forty minutes. when i did get a person on the line she was completely useless. I had my documents (adjustment letters, etc.) yet she kept trying to tell me what was going on based on what she saw in her system, which only had partial information. when I offered to supply the letter codes and dates they were sent, she told me "that means nothing to me" and instructed me to write to the IRS in Austin (though the first two letters came from the Chamblee, Georgia office). The IRS is going through changes on many levels, but it seems the only thing they haven't changed is their utter ineptness! Good luck.

First received a letter from IRS saying an overpayment was made, and a check would be coming within 6-8 weeks. Shortly thereafter received a notice from Illinois Dep of Rev that I owed nearly the same amount. Now looking at this, I don't know who to trust. Has the SS number, and when I search internet, I get to this page by searching the Zip Code on the return mail address. Also to Fresno Ca. 93888-0025.

I found this number on a letter. The letter was from the IRS pertaining to an issue with them getting me my refund. I had 3 options to correct the issue (phone, snail mail or website). I called, sat on hold for 15 minutes and by the time the call was done the issue was corrected and my refund re-issued.
The gentleman handling my call sounded American and was very professional.
I'd have to say it's not a scam.

If you type in the zip code 93888-0250 in fresno, ca., there is no IRS address for that xxxxx-0250 zip.??????????????

I analyzed all the replys. I've also received a letter. In this perverted world, I don't respond to anything without careful examination. This is the most feeble attempt to write a professional letter. The printing quality is out of the 1960's.
What bothers me is that the letter was written in spanish( I don't speak spanish), they had my SSI # correct, and my address correct. I will absolutely not respond. See what happens down the line. I will call my bank to watch out for suspicious transactions. For now......... SCAM.

Got a letter in the mail supposedly from the IRS stating they haven't received my 2010 Fed return. I called 800-829-0922 to clear it up. The guy answers, gives me his name and agent number then proceeds to tell me that the IRS doesn't show record of issuing my refund check for that year and I can either re-E-file through Turbo Tax or send the paper copy to the Fresno address on the form they sent. I told him I already received my nearly $3k return and I'm good. He said the IRS doesn't show record of ever issuing me the refund and to refile and they will send my refund (again) right away. He said the address is Fresno because it's the closest office. So the phone number is registered as a telemarketer? That's it, I'm calling the REAL IRS to see what their status is before doing anything cuz this smells mucho fishy!! Why oh why would the IRS be willing to issue an extra $3k if I'm telling them I already got it? Scam~

I called 1(800) 829-0922, it was listed for a number for the IRS. There will be hold time, when I called I was on hold for 15 min. I guess I was lucky not being on hold longer.
