Another liar.  If you owe taxes, the IRS will MAIL you first, asking you to set up a payment plan or pay the balance.  They do NOT call you first!

NEVER accept a call or any form of a message from someone claiming to be the IRS at face value.
If you receive a call from someone claiming to be with the IRS, STOP!
Ask the person for their employee badge number and the reason for the call, the person will acknowledge your request and fully comply IF they are a real IRS employee. If they do not comply or demand money and threaten arrest, THEY ARE NOT FROM THE IRS!
Once you have that information tell them you will call back on an IRS office phone number.
See:
http://www.irs.gov/uac/How-to-Contact-the-IRS-1

From:
http://www.irs.gov/uac/Report-Phishing

You receive a phone call or paper letter via mail from an individual claiming to be the IRS but you suspect they are not an IRS employee ?

Phone call:

Ask for a call back number and employee badge number.
Contact the IRS ( http://www.irs.gov/uac/How-to-Contact-the-IRS-1 ) to determine if the caller is an IRS employee with a legitimate need to contact you.
If you determine the person calling you is an IRS employee with a legitimate need to contact you, call them back.

Letter or notice via paper mail:

Contact the IRS ( http://www.irs.gov/uac/How-to-Contact-the-IRS-1 ) to determine if the mail is a legitimate IRS letter.
If it is a legitimate IRS letter, reply if needed.

Report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration if the caller or party that sent the paper letter is not legitimate.

I got a call and was asked to call on this 18008297650 number and was provided a file number reference. I called the number and it was IRS. This number appears legit as it appears on the www.irs.gov webpage. Anyway I spoke to the IRS rep who gave me his ID number. He asked me why I had called and I told him about the call I received and the file number provided to me.

He said we don't make calls and provide reference numbers. So unless you have specific issue you want to discuss there is nothing I can do. Well I said I thought I was asked to call by "IRS" and if they say they don't call then I take their word.

I signed off.

Umm I do not think so. IRS do not I repeat DO NOT call you about your tax info. The number which is posted on irs.gov is not the one you posted and it is only for people to call an automatic system to check their refund updates. I never in all my years actual got a call from an IRS agent for any thing and besides they mail you if you owe money. <theory failed try again later>

Definitely real. I was a little skeptical calling because it asked for my SSN#, but I was able to speak to an actual IS agent that knew my tax information.

I encourage you to call, especially if you owe back taxes or owe on anything such as student loans that may be in default. You may be at risk for a levy or garnishment.

I was receiving calls from 716-206-3218 and was told to call 800-829-7650. Never did any of that thinking it was scam. The 800 is valid IRS. Pertaining to Levy. I never received any mail from IRS. Recently my bank accounts were levied by the IRS. I never received any info from them except the recent calls. I went down to meet 1-on-1 with them and they said issue with my taxes. On the levy was a different address. Same name, same SSN, different address. I was victom of my Identity Theft, so all mail from the IRS was going to a different address. Take this number and these calls very seriously. Go down and meet with them if for nothing more than verifying your profile.

got a call on my cell, voice message.  called back-never heard 'on-hold' music like that from the IRS.  Gave me an account # too.  Trouble is, this is a pre-paid phone, never used to contact IRS or other agency.  Never gave out # to any one.
get plenty of other weird calls also.  Maybe the # is circulated around by conners!

You're right.  That's what tipped me off too.  Why would the IRS call my cell?  Also, why did they never ask for my husband who is Head of the Household?  Now they are calling my work number.  I am beyond pissed I want this guy.  Found out the other number they are calling m e from has a Nevada Cell.  Let me tell you, if I track them down, they are in for it!

Okay, I received the same call from a number out of New York 716-206-3218. The voice mail said to contact the IRS at 800-829-7650 and gave me a reference number. I was very skeptical and goggled, goggled and goggled some more. After learning that the number 800-829-7650 was indeed an IRS telephone number, I decided to call but be very cautious in what information that I provided. After waiting on hold, a representative answered the phone, giving his name and ID number. The first question he asked was for my SS#. I politely told him that I was not comfortable in providing him that information over the telephone. He responded by telling me that he would not be able to help me. I asked him if I could provide him the reference number and he stated "yes that will work". I provided him with the reference number left on my voice mail and he accessed the account. He asked me if I new _______ and _______. I told him that I did not know these people and he advised that my telephone number was left as possible contact number for them. He told me that he would remove my telephone number from their account and make note that it was a wrong number.

Conclusion: It is my personal opinion that this is not a scam. I was very leery of it, especially after reading all of these posts. My suggestion would be to contact the telephone number but do not provide them with any personal information. It may be about you but may also just be a wrong number.

I reported this number to the IRS and filed a complaint on the Do Not Call Registry. They had been calling daily and have since stopped. It appears to be a scam.

If you call the number and wait on hold for an extended amount of time you will find it is indeed the IRS ACS Support.   However, the number is ONLY legit If YOU make the call; where a possible SCAM exists is if some one spoofs the number making you think the IRS is calling you.    So the answer is quite simple:  if some one calls you do not give your information; if you call the number yourself then it is perfectly safe.

I've had my new cell number for a month and received this call today.  So the number I would have given the IRS at the time I filed my taxes isn't this number.  IRS doesn't call you and say you must call back immediately either.  Even if you have a valid debt you should always get it in writing.  The IRS doesn't operate this way.

Many legitimate numbers including the IRS are being spoofed!  Never ever give anyone you info, if they can't tell you what it is, its a scam!

Right now there are many scams/fraud & extortion rackets going on! If I where you, I'd check my credit reports and put alerts on them, also contact banks or CC company's if you gave any of that information or gave them money and put a complaint of fraud in. They can change your account numbers for you!

I recieved a phone message from this number. I was suspicious so I looked up the IRS numbers. I found this number on the IRS website. Thinking this is a legit number I called back and entered my SS#. I was on hold for 30 min. So I hung up. I thought about it and it just didn't feel right so I called the State Attonery Gen. Office. She said that it is possible that someone has hacked the SS collections phone number as this phone activity did not fit the Social Security's phone policy. I have not been able to talk to anyone from Social Security after hours of trying. I just can't get a live person on the phone.  So how can we find out if this is legit? I have never received any kind of written notice of a problem with my tax's nor has my tax person.

You may not want to assume this is a scam. I got a call but instead of calling the number they left on the voicemail I called the main number for the IRS (1-800-829-1040) and went through their system to talk to a person. They do ask for ALOT of personal information but IT WAS THE IRS, they knew all my prior years transactions. They did want to talk to me and ignoring the call would have been costly for me. So call the main number at the IRS and see if they wanted to talk to you or as some people have said, go to the local IRS office. But you probably shouldn't ignore the call entirely.
