I am the information security officer at a bank and we had a call from this service.  It is a legitimate company, they have been written about in the Wall Street Journal {Google ?first data corporation wall street journal? and check the results.} They do in fact ask you to call them at this number to verify transactions if you provide the last 4 digits of your credit card number.  You need to verify the phone number associated with your account and the last four of your CC number.  They will not ask you for more than this information and this info will not cause a compromise.
When in doubt, call the phone number on the back of your card and talk to a representative.  Ask that person if they use First Data Corporation, to do fraud monitoring. This company is not a fly-by-night scammer but a large and well known entity operating within the financial industry forever.  As always you should trust your instincts and verify that the call is authentic and continue to exercise an abundance of caution even if you are certain the call is authentic, do not disclose your personal information (like DOB or SSN or full account number) to any caller ever, no one with any legitimate need to call you will ever ask for those things. As an industry we are moving away from the last 4 SSN because of ID theft and because it has lost reliability.
If you are still feeling squirrelly try this, give the caller three options for your CC number, 4586, 4478, 8659, and have them confirm which of those is correct before you continue with the call. The first set should be 100% fake numbers, just three random four digit numbers (this takes care of the guessed-it correctly situation) the next set of three four digit numbers will contain your real number.  If they are who they say they are, they will be right on both occasions, try it, see what happens.  You will have verified your CC to them and they will have verified their authenticity for you.

This is a scam. I received three calls from this company over the weekend on three different numbers.
They got my card bank wrong and I hung up and called my bank.
My bank told me that there was no activity on my card for the last two weeks and that if there are any problems, to include suspicious charges, they would have called me directly, that they do not use a third party company to perform this type of service.
Always call your bank to verify the call before you give out an information.

It's not a good business model if people are concerned that it's fraud. To create worry for your customers defeats the whole purpose.,IT IS a verified number. My bank hired them to verify the last five transactions, and they are part of Visa services.

This is a legitimate number.  I gave no personally identifiable info, other than my name and phone number and they told me the card and bank and my recent purchases.  Then asked if I had run up a $570 bar tab in the United Arab Emerates.  Uhhhh, no.

Ignore the call if you will, but this is a 3rd party company that many issuers use to control fraud.  It worked this time and they denied the charge.

I have received several calls from this number but have never answered them. It's an automated system saying they are calling from my bank to review my transactions. I am very hesitant to give out my personnal info over the phone to anyone. I called my bank and told them about the calls. They pulled up my account and said they did not see anything on the account that would require a phone call. They also told me that if it was them calling they would not use an automated system, it would be a live person calling. The automated system only said they were calling from the Transaction review department from my bank. They left this phone number to call back - 800-622-1361.

This caller is legit. This is a 3rd party (First Data) that your bank contracts with for fraud protection. They will ask the last 4-digits of your credit card as well as the expiration date and the last 4 digits of your SSN. They will then read back your recent transactions on the card and will ask you to specify if they are fraud or not. If this was not legit and they had access to your bank account already (to read off the recent transactions), they would have no need to call and alert you. The sooner you call them back the more likely the fraudulent transaction will not go through.

I just got a call from them. I am always on alert when I hear a robot on the other end first thing then put me on hold whild playing dracula music (don't know how else to explain it) so I hung up. theree is so much fraud out there that I refuse to play along when a robot is the first thing you hear. If they want me to take them seriously then a real person needs to be on the otherside talking to me.

Found a message and missed call from 800 830 8574 with an automated message w/ my name telling me to call 800 377 1809 to verify recent transactions on my account.  when i called the number they indicated -- it seemed strange that it didn't not say it was the name of my bank -- or anything that made me feel comfortable.  I immediately called my bank to verify if they had called to verify anything and was told they had not - and confirmed both these numbers are part of a scam.  BEWARE and DO not call these people back --- call your bank to verify first!!!

Heard a computer voice mail saying there was a suspected fraudulent charges. Didn't call back, but check with the number on the back of my card. It's a scam, by bank would have flagged the account if they suspected fraud.

These guys post ads for jobs and steal your phone number. The make robocalls to phone saying there's fraudulent activity on your card. When you call back you're bounced around to a call center where they steal your personal info. When they're not answering calls they're posting on sites like this and blogs that it's legit. It's not. It's an identity theft ring.

Got a call from them saying there was suspicious transactions on my paypal account and to call them back.

I called back and got an automated system wanting me to verify my phone number then enter the last 4 digits of the card. They never said which card or identified themselves in any way. I mashed # until the phone rang. A lady answered and asked for my name and card number. The sound quality of her voice was terrible. I'm guessing it's bounced around computer voip programs to hide where it's actually coming from. I said I have no way of knowing who she is. She said "I have no way of knowing who YOU are so I can't talk to you about your account. I already did that once and got in trouble." She kept insisting I confirm my card number, phone, and name. None of which I did. I said "Worst-case scenario on me is that I stole someone's  phone, worst-case scenario on you you're trying to steal bank information." She hung up on me.

I called Paypal (the number on the back of the card). They reported no-one's called me. Said they don't know this 800 number and said nothing was wrong with any of my accounts.

I called the scam artist back. Got "Lyle" and called him a bunch of names and suggested that he do various things to himself. He yelled "Ok fine we're shutting off your card then!" so I continued calling him names. He also hung up.

Total scam. The ones defending them here either have been victims of ID theft or are the scammers themselves.

I just got a call from them, they wanted me to verify my name, phone number, mailing address, SSN, last 4 of card .... I asked them to verify all that information if they are who they say they are.  They said they couldn't unless I verified the information first, we went back and forth for about 5 mins, asked to talk to a supervisor and they hung up on me.

I don't know if this legit or not, but I am NOT giving anyone my personal information, I don't care if you are my own mother, you ain't getting it !!!

It seems like a legit service. I paid my property tax with a new debit card the other day, a $500.00+ transaction. This company called me and wanted my phone number. I was respectful and explained my reluctance to divulge any information over the phone. The woman was very understanding and suggested I call my bank's customer service department, and that they would have the same information. I will do that first thing Monday morning. All-in-all, a pleasant call! LOL

I was sketched out at first but I called the number on the back of my credit card and the lady (I'm at First Citizens Bank) before I even told her the full number, I just said an 800 #, she said 800-830-8574 is with the department of bank fraud. Prior to calling her I had reviewed my bank transactions online and everything looked okay, so I just decided to call the number. All they asked was for the number the message was called to and they spit out my name (and there's also 3 people living at my house with accounts at first citizens). They wanted to review only $20 that I had almost spent online ordering take-out, but I had decided to use my other credit card. There was nothing fishy, the man on the phone mentioned my 3 last transactions and I told him my situation. The 800 number is legit. They aren't asking for an account number, card number, last digits on my card or anything. If you don't believe me then call the number yourself and discover that they are only trying to protect you and your bank account. Trust me.

This is a totally legit number. I got a call from it today. There was no message left.   When I called back they informed me that my debit card had been compromised. I did call my bank and found that there were in fact charges that I did not make. If you are scared to call back the number listed,  at least call your bank and check it out.

Sorry for you haters, but this is completely legit. I called back and only gave my phone number that they left the message on. The GENTLEMAN (very polite and well spoken) did not ask for any personal info, account number, etc. He had all info and asked me, while I was looking at my online banking page about purchases with amounts made by me at Whole Foods and the movie theater that previous day. Those were fine. He then told me they denied a charge at a convenience store in New York for $227 (that's a big charge for a convenience store) that was not me. After verifying my address the expiration date on my debit card (that he already had) notified me that they will be closing that account and issuing me a new card today. No scam here.

Got a call from this number.  Sounded like a scam, but I held the line to see what would happen.  Heard about 5 minutes of on hold music, but never got a person. Decided to google the number, found conflicting reports on the number on this website, so decided to call my bank and find out for sure.  Turns out it was legit.  I had made an online purchase earlier in the day, realized I forgot one item on my order, called the merchant, placed a new order (this was less than 5 minutes after the first order), and these two purchases, for several hundred dollars each, raised the FRAUD flag with my credit union.  So, it was legit, and my card had been flagged.  The issue was cleared up by my call to the bank. I told them about the call from the 800 number, and she said it was legit, but that if I ever have any suspicion about a number calling me about financial transactions, it's never a bad idea to call the bank to double check.

So, today, at least, the call from this number was legit.

I received a call from 1-800-830-8574 claiming they were a transaction review department of my bank.  They left a voicemail telling me to call 1-800-337-1809 and one of their operators could help me.  I of course called my bank directly and they reported no one had called regarding my account.  Never give personal info to an unsolicited call.

This is a company  number credit cards use to verify recent activity. They only asked my name and had all the information via my telephone number. They did not ask for any other information, and just wanted to verify some recent transactions one of which was to a foreign country.

Got a voice message from this number. I don't usually call back but I do have a credit card from them so I did return the call. Good thing! They didn't ask me for my card #, they just asked me for my phone # and name. Then they gave me my address and asked me to verify. THEN they asked if I had made a recent purchase of 400 hundred something dollars at Walmart.com. I had not. That was a little alarming. Then they gave me some other recent transactions and told me to just say yes or no to each one. Those were legitimate but the Walmart one was not. She told me the Walmart transaction had not gone through and they were shutting my card down. They're sending me a new card.

Folks, I did not have to give any information I did not feel comfortable giving her. And making that call back prevented further attempts at using my card fraudulently. So don't be worried that this is a scam.

Beware.

I received a call from 800-830-8574.  The recorded message said I had reached "Card Services" and they wanted to verify there was not fraudulent activity on my account.  Which account, I asked myself.  They asked me to verify the number I called in on.  Then they asked for the last four digits on my card.  That's when I figured it was a scam and hung up.  What do they think I'm going to do; give them the last four digits of all the cards I have ?

This is by far the sketchiest sounding phone call/message combination for a phone number/company that is ACTUALLY LEGIT! I would also agree to give this number a call back if you do get this message.  I made a purchase over the phone of 2500 dollars for an engagement ring.  It was denied the first time but accepted the second.  Once I called this number back it only needed me to verify that both of those transactions were mine and that I made them.  Very nice service actually.  Would be nice if it wasnt so automated but at the same time it did not really ask for anything serious like full account numbers or anything...
