This is the stupidest comment that I have ever heard.  There is no play on words!  It is explained that the product is a specialty printed cover to fit on your phone book.  That is exactly what it is.  ALSO D & D Advertising has NEVER done a phone book cover in Hawaii.

These guys are pushy, and slimy, he is trying to sell me ad space on a football schedule, and says they have been in business for 20 years, and when I ask him to present me with one in my area, he says its the first year, so I tell him to call me next year after they have their feet wet. He then does not even hesitate, and he HANGS UP on me!!!!! The phone number in my caller id is 903-705-6172

This is the most ridiculous post I have ever read.  There is no play on words.  The company makes vinyl covers that are made to fit the newest edition of the local phone book.  Not only that, but every sale gets a verification call anywhere from a few hours to a couple of days later and it is again stated that the product is a phone book cover and that a delivery man will be delivering some of the said covers to the advertiser.

I am also a former employee of this company.  I only worked at this place for a few months, in 2008.  I don't know anything about how they do or do not aquire the phone books.  What I can say about this company is that they treat employees very badly.  They do not pay anything if you do not make any sales, but you are expected to work 9 AM to 5 PM.  How can they demand good attendance when they pay you nothing if you do not sell?  The training program is a joke. The trainer is a woman who screams at the trainees in their ear when they are trying to talk to a customer.  She says it is to help the sales person learn how to sell, but it is very distracting.  There is no real training program.  They go over the script with you a few times and then put you on the phone.   As I said, if you do not sell, they pay you nothing.

This statement is true.  I also worked there (D & D Advertising, Cincinnati, Oh) .  It is not technically a scam.  You will get your ad printed onto the vinyl phone book covers ( or the sports schedules), but the sales people are taught to make the program sound much better than it really is.  This day and age, how many people actually respond to ads on a phone book cover or a football schedule?    They do not "partner" with local real estate agents.  They give a free ad to a  local real estate agency.  Then, they give the realtor a couple hundred of the covers to pass out.  The only reason they do that is so that they can name drop the realtor.  In fact, sometimes the realtor they are "partnered with" may receive as few as 50 of the actual covers to pass out!  The management doesn't tell the sales people to out and out lie and say that they work for the realtor, but the customer is led to believe that the realtor is much more involved in the program than they really are.  It is also true that many of the realtors they have on the cover (or schedule) get angry because they are using the realtor's name to sell ads.  The products are mostly handed out by the businesses with ads on the publication.
Also, the sales people are trained to lie to potential customers about the urgency of agreeing to purchase an ad right then.  When a potential customer says "no" or "I need to think it over" , the sales people are trained to lie and say things like "since it is the last ad I have, I can let you have it for $$$$ instead of $$$$.  It is almost never the case that it is actually the last ad available.  As I said, the sales people are trained to lie to justify why they can suddenly reduce the price.  Also,  the sales people are paid only by commission.  They receive no salary, no hourly wage or guaranteed pay whatsoever.  They are ONLY paid by commission.  If a person works 40 hours during a week and makes no sales, he or she gets NOTHING!   Many sales companies work on a commission based pay, but this company doesn't offer any sort of a drawal program as do many sales companies where you can draw a small paycheck against future sales so that you don't work an entire week and get absolutely nothing.  Also, they charge the sales people back their commissions when a customer doesn't pay for their ad.  They even go so far as to charge the sales people back their commission if a customer does pay but the check is returned, as if the sales person has any control over a customer paying with a bad check!   As you can imagine, that makes the sales people in a position to stretch the truth if needed to make sales.  The trainer  teaches the new sales people to be very aggressive and to use these "drops" in prices to make sales.
Also, it is true that the company does steal phone books.   They  contact the phone book publishers and pretend to be interested in getting hired as a phone book delivery person in order to find out the delivery sites and starting dates.  After they find out the delivery site, they call the delivery site manager and pretend to be a customer advertising in the phone book needing to get the book to see their ad.  Sometimes the experienced delivery site managers are aware of this scheme and will not release a book.  When this happens, they will actually have a local business in the area with ad in the book drive over to the delivery site and pick up a phone book for them.  They either pay the local business or give them a free ad on the publication.  Either way, this is very dishonest.   Not only are they getting the phone book without paying the publisher for it, but they are also tricking the delivery site managers to release a phone book to them so they can solicit the businesses with new listings in the phone books.   They compare the new phone book to the previous year phone book and pick out the new listings.  Usually a new phone book listing is a new business.  A new business is usually an easier sale because it sounds very good to get your name out through realtors and all over town for only a couple hundred dollars.  The fact is, they don't print a very high number (1000 for the phone book covers and 2500 for the sports schedules).   They also use similar tactics to newspaper publishers.   They contact newspapers pretending to be interested in placing ads in the newspaper to get copies of the papers sent to them so they can solicit businesses with ads in the newspapers.  People on the "do not call list" are not exempt from being called by them, because they are not calling from lists or purchased sales leads, but from the yellow pages and from newspapers.
The program isn't actually a "scam" because you will get your ad printed on the publication.  That is a fact.  However, their claims of having a large portion of their business from  repeat advertisers is a lie.  They do get SOME repeat advertisers, but that number is a very small portion.  The fact is, most businesses that advertise with them get stuck with a pile of phone book covers or schedules that they cannot give away and they get no response to their ad.  It ends up being a complete waste of money for the businesses.   Although it isn't a "scam", it is (just like the other person said) very shady.  There are many other ways that a small business can spend  valuable advertising dollars with a much better return and a company with better business practices.

I worked for this company for many years.  While their program is not actually a scam, you would be well advised to avoid doing business with them.  They give a free ad on the vinyl phone book cover to a local realtor and provide said realtor with about 100 to 200 covers  to pass out.  The rest of the covers (a total of 1000) are given to the advertisers to pass out themselves.  Any and all reasons you will be given for a price reduction are false.  The lowest they (salespersons) can sell an ad for is about $225 up to much as they can get you to pay.  You will be led to believe that the covers are more available to the public than they actually are.  As I say, the realtor gets a couple hundred at most, and they very, very seldom are available at "banks, supermarkets, etc."  Most of the time, said realtors end up not doing it the next year ( FOR A FREE AD!!) because they can't give out the covers they are given and the salespeople name drop the realtor like crazy to give the appearance of local credibility.  When pushed, most of the salespeople there will tell you they don't actually work for the realtor, but it is heavily implied that the realtor somehow sponsors the program.  Also, this company DOES steal phone books all over the county.  When a new edition of a phone directory is starting distribution, they call the delivery site manager and pretend to be a company advertising in the book and desperately need a copy of the book to "see their ad." This way they get a copy of the new book to solicit the companies with new listings.  The theory being a new listing is a new business and  an easy sale.  Also, the phone book publishers normally charge for the books.  With this scheme, they avoid paying for the phone books.  A typical phone book would cost $75-$150 to purchase.  They scam the publishers out of hundreds of phone books a year doing this.   So, while it isn't a "scam" because you will get your ad printed on 1000 vinyl phone book covers, it is still somewhat shady.  You will be led to believe that many people renew their ads in following years; the fact is it is less than probably five to ten percent.

See how easy people will get things confused. We both own a vinyl phone book cover company. In all respect to my knowledge of DAS  and on behalf as one of the owners of D & D Advertising we are both a reputable company.

When dealing with thousands of customers on a yearly basis over the phone you will have at times customers getting confused on who they talk to and what they bought.

The fact of this matter is that we have addressed  every issue that has been brought to our attention,

Another post that says we are a rip off.

I would like to know how we are a rip off or a scam since they do not specify the reason of unhappiness. This is just another attack on a good company who does what they say they will do.. I live on alot of repeat business and if I was a rip off I do not think I would not have a good  repeat response.

I believe that this post is a fact. If a customer does cancel after purchase it should immediately get taken off. The salesperson did not cancel with us. There was no way that we would know this unless we are told by the salesperson.

If a business would like to cancel they should cancel with the office and not with the salesperson. The reason is because the sales rep may be out of the office for a while and it may not get canceled.

In result of her dealing with this customer in a unproffessional way she has been repermanded.

I can understand ones frustration with a BBB report of  a D. Due to D & D Advertising's BBB report at the time, we have changed the way we do business, In the past a business could purchase an ad on a vinyl phone book cover "on a hand shake". D & D trusted that a business who purchased an ad and agreed to pay for it once it was completed and deliverd would then pay for the one time payment.

Due to advertisiers purchasing an ad and not having the money to pay once completed, they would come up with any excuse as to why they would not pay. We have changed our policy of payment arrangements and now have a B- rating and looking forward to an A.

I am glad that their is a reporting system like this that shares information about companies who are taking advantage of business owners. However it is also a way that any one who is intending to hurt a reputation of a good business can put doubt in ones thoughts. D & D Advertising has nothing to hide from any one. We run an honest fair reputable business for 19 years. I do like to get feed back on the way my company represents itself. If you have any questions regarding D & D Advertising business practice please do not hesitate to email me at dianespencer@fuse.net

There have been several complaints about this sales person.  Due to this and other concerns, he is no longer with us.  Employees that do not represent our company in the best possible light will be dealt with accordingly.

This accusation is false.  There was no action against our company by the Wage & Hours Division in 2009.  There are other companies that do what we do that have had action against them.  There is also a "D & D Advertising Inc." in Toledo, OH that is often confused with our company.  Perhaps a case of mistaken information?

In response to this post we make the vinyl phone book covers to fit varies directories. We do not affilate ourselfs with working or  that we are associated with any telephone directory publisher. The vinyl phone book covers are not cheap. The covers are made out of a 12 gage vinyl and the ads are silked screen so they do not chip or peal. The covers are designed to last for years. We do have a few different size ads so if we are scheduled  to print we will work with the price. This does not make us a bad company. If you have any questions regarding our advertising you may email me at dianespencer@fuse.net.

This location called and spoke to my husband about putting our business advertising on the AMC channel and would occur for 5 days.  She gave him an amount of $215 to do this.  My husband then told her to let him call her back so he could discuss this with me, we got online to google the return phone # and every entry I see for this sounds like scam material.  So beware, sounds like they find out what business you are in and then try to solicit.  The lady he talked to was Thelma with same call back 800 # but extension 110.

I have two businesses, and they called me on one of them. The lady Sheri Foyeur (spl) told me they only have two spots left and they'll be gone the next day if I don't take it. She told me she could put me in & I could call and cancel it the next day after I had discussed it with my partner if I wanted to.
The next day I called 4 times but she did not answer, so at the end of the day I left her a nice message saying we were going to cancel. I was very clear about what I wanted & it was definitely Sheri's answering machine. She never called me back.
Just a week later, her sales guy calls me & says he's coming to pick up a check & drop off the cover samples. I told him I called Sheri & cancelled. He said he'd call his company to find out what's going on. Soon after that Sheri called me, very upset. She used a bunch of bad sales tactics on me, like guilting me about how she won't get her commission, and she's a "single mother with three kids". But what got me was how she claimed that she never got my message. I should have known this would happen, but she wouldn't answer her phone, so what could I do? Anyway, I told her I did leave her a message on HER answering machine, and that I had nothing else to say unless she wanted to speak with my partner. She hung up on me & called later, only my partner picked up.
She tried to get him to give her at least something and if we don't, then "REMAX and Coldwell Banker would know about this, and what would they think of you then?" He called her out on that and asked her how they would know about it. She paused & said "Well, I guess I would have to tell them" He told her he promised her nothing but her guy can bring the samples in. This lady lied to me, tried to guilt me and threaten me, and she has absolutely no character.
I don't believe this was a scam, but a poor company with very bad work ethics. Do not buy into it. It's a waste of time and energy.
