I have an unlisted number that is installed only as part of a package deal, 99.9% never used.  I had the ringer turned off, when the phone is connected, and see  800-861-4838 pop up...  Bought a really cheap Old School modem off eBay for $10  (remember the type you plugged into the phone line and Dialed out to AOL or some other ISP?   I leave that on the line now.. they get a long beeeeeeeeeeep and the modem answering them...   Telemarketing maggots use an auto dialing machine or board in a PC that dials from a database or a range of numbers; I'm sure the number before and after our personal numbers got a call/gets a call. Sometimes I take off the modem and put them on speaker when I have company over and we have fun harassing/degrading/insulting them offering them to call back anytime they confirmation they suck ****

Debt Collector
I get this number frequently on a business cell phone NOT my personal phone.  Likewise, they never leave a message.  HOWEVER, today they did!  The automated message stated it was for a Karen something-or-other...If I am not Karen, disregard the message.  If I am Karen Whatever, hold the line.  So naturally, I held the line.  THEN, a live person left a message.  Not only did they request a call back, they spewed all of this Karen's personal business all over my voice mail.  I know how much debt they are trying to collect and from where.  My guess is that has to be a violation of some sort!!!  I think the same company called my business number (I don't own a business, this is a phone supplied by my job and I had this # for 8 years and do not give it out) about a year ago and I called back and told them to stop calling...and they did until recently.

These people call every day, in spite of communication re: my age, state of health and permanent disability. I have not only told them of my situation, but also written to them, referring to the FDCPA Laws. The original debt was for huge medical bills w/o Insurance years ago. The Bank involved simply sends the bill on to yet another debt collector.

They call every day and never leave a message.  I assume they are looking for a family member who hasn't lived with us for 10 years.  They shouldn't be allowed to harass anonymously.

They are a persistent caller.  My caller ID always shows unavailable.  They never leave a message.  I answered it one time, and they asked for a person.  I asked what it was pertaining too, and was told it was a personal business matter.  I suspect they are a collection agency.  The person they asked for doesn't live there.

I have been getting many calls from this number and I am disabled and when I get to the phone there is no information on my caller ID except for this number and they do not leave a message.  This is hard when someone like me can not walk well and then have to get up to answer phone calls such as this.  The caller ID states, "unavailable".

The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act spells out harassment or abuse as
§ 806. Harassment or abuse
A debt collector may not engage in any conduct the natural
consequence of which is to harass, oppress, or abuse any
person in connection with the collection of a debt. Without
limiting the general application of the foregoing, the following
conduct is a violation of this section:
(1) The use or threat of use of violence or other criminal
means to harm the physical person, reputation, or property
of any person.
(2) The use of obscene or profane language or language
the natural consequence of which is to abuse the hearer
or reader.
(3) The publication of a list of consumers who allegedly
refuse to pay debts, except to a consumer reporting
agency or to persons meeting the requirements of section
603(f) or 604(3) of this Act.
(4) The advertisement for sale of any debt to coerce payment
of the debt.
(5) Causing a telephone to ring or engaging any person
in telephone conversation repeatedly or continuously
with intent to annoy, abuse, or harass any person at the
called number.
(6) Except as provided in section 804, the placement of
telephone calls without meaningful disclosure of the
caller’s identity.
The call is clearly illegal and considered harassment since the caller ID comes up unavailable under section 806 of the FDCPA.  Multiple phone calls at all times of the day could be considered harassment too.

This appears to be a phsing expedition to get personal information that can be used to access financial assets -- they called her again recently. I hope no one is giving any personal or banking information to unsolicited callers or e-mailers. This operation appears to work under several different phone numbers, some of which show up on caller ID as area codes other than 800, and several different variations of the name Calvary. They appear to get phone numbers from several online sources and actively go after people who use sites like Facebook and Monster to get info. REPEAT: For your own good,, never give things like Social Security, driver license, credit card, debit card or bank account numbers to anyone who contacts you first.

This number calls me constantly for my estranged husband. When they asked for him, I told them I did not know where he was, which is the truth. Then they asked if he was my husband. I said, "My estranged husband." They then began to harass me and tell me that "most people know where their husbands are!" and "That is awfully strange, don't you know where he is!?" among other things. I finally ended up having to explain to the woman on the phone that "he walked out on me, his wife, and his two baby boys. I do not know where he is and when I call his place of work they will not even tell me if he is still working there. Maam, I have no idea where he is and I am in the process of filing for divorce. If you call me one more time, I will begin including my lawyer." She then told me that they were not harassing me, that they were harassing my husband. (How can they be harassing someone who is not here, and why say you are actually harassing someone?) and that they only call my house four times per day. They actually call me somewhere between ten and twenty, depending on if it is a workday or the weekend. I have a great lawyer who is in the process of contacting them and filing harassment claims.

I normally reject calls FROM 800 numbers out of hand, particularly on my cell phone. This one was persistent and when I finally answered and said "hello" a woman's voice said, "Sylvester?" (not my name). I hung up. Repeated call attempts ensued.

If you can find out whom the alleged debt is with, you can contact the company directly to arrange to pay it.  It is within your rights to refuse to pay a collection agency and they can do nothing if you tell them you are not paying anything to them.

I have been getting these calls and the first one the guy asked for some personal information and when I refused to give it he said he would just keep calling back until I did. I said I would just change my number. Of course did not stop the calls so next step is I am changing my number.
I don't believe I have anything in collection but if I did there is no way I would pay to the jerk that called me!

Yes you can stop collectors from calling you. But you must send them a letter (phone requests are no good) and it is suggested you send it by certified mail to prove they got it. When you send this letter also ask for validation/verification of the ALLEGED debt (never admit it is your debt). Harassment claims should be reported to your state AG office. After sending this letter they cannot call you again and must send written proof of the debt. If they dont and keep calling you can sue them.
See budhibbs.com for a free sample letter and more info. Remember tho that if the debt is real and still collectible you could be sued. If that happens talk to a lawyer to see if the debt is still collectible. Good luck everyone.

My understanding is that if you are receiving calls from a collection agency and you request they stop calling you, they have to stop according to the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.

There is also something called debt validation
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Debt_validation
Debt Validation, or "debt verification", refers to a consumer's right to challenge a debt and/or receive written verification of a debt from a debt collector. The right to dispute the debt and receive validation are part of the consumer's rights under the United States Federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) and are set out in §809[1] of that act.

Requesting debt validation can sometimes stop them in their tracks as most don't have the required information.
