I just acted like a confused old man when I saw the number they were calling from.  i told the guy with the indian accent named David from  Bloomington, IN that i was on the toilet and couldn't get to te computer.  I also said that i would call him tomorrow.  He said that he was a Mocrosoft certified technician and that my Windows 7 computer was sending error messages.  I guess the joke is on him because my computer is Windows 8!  I had time to kill so i yanked his chain a bit.
I hope i don't go to hell for this, it's too hot down there.

A person claiming to be Paul Marics from MicroSoft (from India) said my computer was throwing error messages and I reached my maximum error levels and they needed to get into my computer to fix it!  As I'm typing this he called back and I told him how I looked this up and found it to be a scam and he's said "no problem".  I told him to lose my number or I would get the police after him.

Just received a call from a Indian speaking man, heavy accent. His name was Allen. He said he was Micro Soft Technician and works at Operating System Support hired by MS.  My computer is sending large amounts of data error messages and he  instructed me to go to Eventwr, WIndows Long/ Applications/ and see all the errors.  That MS has benchmarked these errors and my computer is a risk.  He then instructed me to go to www.ossupport.us and to log in so he could share my screen and fix the errors.  As I was typing in the www.ossupport email address... This search as a SCAM came up!  I then began asking him, if he knew so much about my computer sending errors, for him to tell me what computer system Operating System and IE I was using.. He didn't know and wanted me to tell him. I asked him, how did he get my information, and could he verify I was the person he needed to call.  THe caller ID showed "NO PHONE NUMBER".   He had my name, but that was it.  He told me someone else (or computer) dialed my number, so he didn't have access to what number he actually called.  He was pushy!  He wanted to log into my computer and show me how he could fix the errors.  He didn't like that I was asking him questions about the reason for his call.  He kept talking over me, or not answering the questions.

He gave me the 800-870-1306 phone number to call back and verify with his company.  I became increasingly suspicious of what he was trying to get me to do. I asked him if he was trying to sell me something, b/c I had all the Antivirus software I need.  I told him, how did I know this wasn't a Scam?  I didn't trust him calling me out of the blue without any reason, and all computers have system errors from time to time.  I would call my Computer to come check this out for me. I hung up on this guy..

In all my years using MS products...(over twenty years.. almost everyday..) I've never had a Technician call me without me first placing an Request.  I tried to look up the phone number, and it showed SCAM!  Unavailable.

The number came up unknown. Caller with a thick accent said he was from "Microsoft Tech Support" about my Windows PC. I knew the scam, so I told him: "Sir, I know what you are trying to do, and I am going to report you to the police. I'd probably recommend you just hang up now."

But he persisted. He gave me this number (800-870-1306) and told me to look it up and I would see he was genuine.

After some more back-and-forth, he finally hung up. The thing is, he was annoyed at ME for calling him a scammer.

Looking back, I kind of wish I just kept him on the line as long as possible to waste his time. Maybe tell him, "I need to grab something" and leave the phone just sitting there.

I wish there was something I could do to get these people in trouble, but, alas, I don't think there is.

I just got a call back from this OS SUPPORT & he didn't realize that he had called me earlier tonight. He saw that I called him and called me back. I asked him for his Microsoft Certification number and he said that he couldn't disclose it to me.  He ended up hanging up on me when I had asked him how do I know if he is actually MS Certified if he doesn't give me his certification number so I can cross reference it with Microsoft itself. He then hung up on me.  What an idiot.  This is more proof he is a scumbag jock itch scammer.

SCAM... Dont fall for this do***e bag. Got a call from these bozos at 8:30pm tonight. The guy had an Indian accent. He said he is a Microsoft Certified Technician from OS Support. I asked him for a return phone number & he gave me this 1-800 number. Although this number appeared on my caller ID "(999) 056-66". I asked him where his company is based out of and he did not understand what I was asking. After I explained that I was asking where his company is located he said Florida and India. He then told me to get on my computer and I said "No that's ok, I went to collage for computers and I'm pretty familiar with them so you can just tell me what you are looking for and your sales pitch and I'll let you know if I need it"... He hung up. I called the 1800 he gave me so I could yell at him & of course it kept on ringing with no one answering it. This guy is an idiot & a waste of space. I hope he gets an STD for trying to scam people especially who wouldn't any better.

Complete scam.  Exactly like how Pele explained above.

I have a good working knowledge on computers so I'm able to tell they're full of it.  The event viewer errors stuff and them saying my computer must be running really slow from all these errors were big giveaways.  My OS is on a SSD that boots up in 20 seconds and runs very snappy.

If you really had computer issues, bring it to a local shop or knowledgeable friend.  Or you can just buy a new tower for office use for under $300.  Less than what they'll charge to "fix" your problems.
Too smart for that!

I just sent out the following message to everyone on my email list (and yes I DID use BCC!):

Please read this to the end - it's not heresay or a forward from someone else. It just happened to me  (3/29)

IF you decide to forward this to your friends PLEASE BE SURE to only add their email addresses to the BCC part of your email addressing. DO NOT USE TO or CC to send out multiple emails EVER! Don't turn this email into spam please :)

Ok, normally I would never send out stuff like this but this just happened and I think it's important enough to give my friends a heads up.

I got a call from "John" with an "out-sourced" accent who said he was from "Windows OS Support". He says their OS center has been recieving notification from my Windows computer (right) that it had multiple viruses. He directed me to go on my computer and visit his website. I told him I'd need a lot more confirmation before I did anything and he had about 15 seconds to convince me. I asked him to give me his phone number and I'd call back. He gave me 1-800-870-1306 and when I asked who I would be calling he said "John". I said "no, what company are you with" and he again said "OS Support" At this point I told him I knew it was bogus and not to call again. And I hung up.

I've Googled it and found interesting info. Go to http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/fo ... 10-2e293cab96c5 for the best explanation. To put it in a nutshell - this is classic "phishing". In the worst cases the callers have even harrassed the person who answers and flooded them with phone calls.

If you get this call DO NOT give out any personal info or waste any time on it. DO NOT go to their website (it could be triggered with a virus or some other trojan programs) because at the very least they will have your IP address once you visit.

I am sorry to be sending this out but I would never forgive myself if one of my friends got caught up in it. Read the website I linked to above or do your own search for "os support call" or the phone number "1-800-870-1306" and read what you find. If you get this call - hang up immediately and report it to your internet provider as I will be doing.

Regards,
Igor

Hey Steve, Paul...whoever y'all claim to be, regarding issues with Windows:

My "Windows" were broken out from an errant baseball pitch.  Can you go into my computer and fix 'em???  it's right cold in the house with all my broken "Windows".  I am pretty sure they caught a virus from the brat who broke them, as she purportedly has a cold.  Can you please remove the virus that the little girl gave my "Windows"???

Precisely correct.  There is no way to connect your computer IP to you except via your ISP.  In rare instances such as when the botnet virus was active, ISPs contacted their customers directly who were affected.  But Microsoft absolutely does not contact users, does not provide information to third part tech support companies and most often does not even have the contact information for users of Windows since the activation process does not require you to provide it.  Pretty funny reading the illiterate whines from the scammers here who have absolutely no answer to the article from Microsoft on their scams:

I reported this scam on a different phone number about a month ago.  I told the caller (who had a heavy Indian accent) that I have a friend who can fix my PC for free.  The caller claimed I had viruses on my machine, but how would he have known this?  Even if I had inadvertently visited a rogue website and they had obtained my IP address, there's no way they could have known my phone number!!!  I then hung up on this Bozo.
