Why are you replying to a post that's almost 3 years old?  Whether they were or were not considering donating before getting calls, you can better believe they won't be donating now if they consider the calls to be annoying!

I work for this firm and my one question is this, before they called you, had you ever even thought about donating to special olympics? That's why we call. It wouldn't exist if we didn't go to work and call people all day.

They're a "charity", so they don't have to obey the Do-Not-Call list.

But a cell phone is different, because most people pay for incoming calls too. It's illegal even from a "charity". Don't add your cell phone # to the DNC. It will just result in more calls (unlike a landline). Instead, report them to the FCC. You can do it online. fcc.gov

Calls come in but no message left, I will not answer a call unless I know who is calling, but this numbers keep coming up 800-939-6788

rceived another call from this # 800 939-6788.  Caller says hello on top of our greeting then after we answer repeatedly just stays on the phone. Wish for some common courtesy.  If they have something to sell - say it.

Fund Raising call from Special Olympics.  They won't leave a message but they WILL call back and keep calling.

Well, after reading these posts, I am confused. We had a long message left on our machine yesterday from this number.  It was not the Special Olympics. It was a woman, speaking Portugese, going on about something to do with home mortages. We rent, so I'm pretty sure we have no previous dealing with them, whoever they are. plus I'd remember, since my Portugese is less than minimal! Couldn't catch a company name. Machine said Unknown. Pests!

Idiots call but leave no message.  Been calling about 3 weeks now.  Get the hint - we don't answer the phone for numbers we don't know & who don't identify themselves on caller ID.

Well they just called me minutes ago just saying: Excuse me I was calling for so & so please give us a return call at ...... numbers said so fast unable to get them, yet they want to call back. Well bulls to them for I won't answer the phone seeing any odd kind of number as i had been doing.

There's no point in trying to get taken off the list - the same telemarketing firm will be calling in a few months for another charity, which maybe gets 20%.

A far larger percentage of this money goes to bribing^H^H^H^H^H^H^H contributing to congresscritters to make sure the "charity" exemption to do-not-call never goes away.

If you want to contribute to a charity, contribute directly - though I'd never contribute to a charity that lets these companies use their name.

Received two calls today from this number too. No message, nothing. Then this afternoon one more, and I still didn't answer. And they hung up.I am on the DNC list and its a waste of time.

It's Special Olympics but you can call their customer service # to have your number removed the the calling list:  866-544-4880

They have called frequently and hung up on the answering machine. I called their number and it is coming from the Special Olympics. Their answering machine gives you a phone number to call to talk to a rep. The rep asks for name and address if you request to be put on their Do Not Call list (I gave it to them since we're listed in the phone book).

It bites, & is part of the problem that gov. gives charity card blanc to annoy, if we can or want to contribute we can find them.

Let's get a few things straight:

1) Charities can call you even if you're on the Do Not Call list.

2) Much charity fundraising is done by paid telemarketers. They often keep 70%-75% of the money raised. This does not make it a scam; the charities are legitimate.

3) Because they keep so much of the money, you should not donate to anyone on the phone unless you know who they are and you know they are volunteers and not paid fundraisers.

4) They don't leave messages because they are limited as to how often they can call. If they hang up without leaving a message or speaking to a person, it does not count against the limit.

Best long-term solution is to get an unlisted number. Many phone companies also have services to block unknown numbers. Or get a Google voice account and us it as your main number; they allow you to block numbers on a case by case basis.

Call came in 12/09/2010,  Caller Id shows UNKNOWN  I do not answer calls from unknown numbers, ans machine picked up.  As soon as ans machine picks up caller hangs up.  No message left.  I consider this a scam, if they do not leave a message, it has to be one.

They are calling me daily...i answered the phone today in hopes of them stop calling and when I did....it says they are the Special Olympics and will call me back later..HELLO I ANSWERED THE PHONE.  Really annoying.

Called 9:41 am today. Let it go to my answering machine. They just hang up and keep calling back again. Also getting calls from a host of other unidentified 800 numbers, probably the same thing. Includes some from American Heart Association.

Don't these idiots get it? you keep pestering me I will NEVER give anything! And I don't give anything via phone or door-to-door solicitations any way, so just QUIT!! NOW!!

Just got a call from this number.  I hope he/she likes Luciano Pavarotti's rendition of "Ave Maria" because that's what he/she heard when I placed the phone next to my stereo speaker!!!!
