They left a message asking to call them back. When I called, the guy did NOT ask me for my credit card number, which was reassuring. He wanted to know about our last three charges to our card: a) a $1.00 charge to JC Penneys, 2) a charge online to Zappos and 3) a charge to XYZ. I told him that the JC Penneys and Zappos charge were bogus, but the XYZ was good. He told me that our Discover credit card appeared to be compromised and they would cancel that card number and reissue a new one. I'm not destroying my Discover card until I find out for sure that it is canceled or I get a new one. If all this is true, then I am glad that they are on the ball.

I received a call from 800-950-7542.  They said they were from Discover.  Asked if I had made a $1 charge for something to do with music...I had not.  They then proceeded to ask for my card number.  I asked how was I to know that I was talking to someone from Discover.  He told me to call the 1-800-discover number on the back of my card.  I did, and Discover was extremely helpful.  I was a scam, as no such charge was made to my card.  I gave her the number, and hopefully this scam will be stopped.

I got a call from this number this morning (7/20/09). An automated voice said it was Discover Card Fraud Prevention and they wanted to verify charges. Discover has done this in the past (though with a live person); so I assumed it was legit. The recording asked if I had made a $1 charge for UPS today. I had not.

I was then transfered to a live person who listed four charges from today, including the above and another for $800 and something for PayPal. I said I hadn't made the charges, and they said they would close the card and I would receive a new one in 7-10 days.

I called 1-800-DISCOVER and the rep told me their fraud prevention department HAD NOT called me, and they did not see any of the charges mentioned in the call I received.

The first call did not ask for any personal identifying information that I remember (e.g., card number, SSN, etc.); so I'm not sure yet what the scam is.

I got one for two consecutive days from this number as well. So went to check out my discover acct online, they haven't sent me an email abt any fraud issues, which usually they would had it been legit. So I don't think of calling them at all.  I'll wait for my email alert, besides I don't see any discrepancies in my online activities.

Got a call from 800-950-7542 indicating that my Discover card may have been used fraudulently.  I called the Discover 800 number, 800-347-2683, and spoke to an account representative.  The rep indicated that Discover does not use 800-950-7542 and that the call may be associated with some scam operation.

This is ***scam***  ***NOT Discover*** as they are claiming to be.  They put you at ease by NOT asking for your card number, but that is because they already have your card number.  It is useless to them because they need either the three digit code on the back or the email attached to the card to use it.  So don't give them ANYTHING hang up and notify the real Discover Customer Service number on the back of your card.

...More information.

When I called back, the system identified my phone number and asked me to review three charges, I just tapped the 0 button a couple of times, heard a loud beep (assuming I was transferred to Discover) and that's how I got the operator.

I'm starting to think that it very well may be a totally bogus operation that forwards your calls to the genuine Discover Fraud Prevention when you ask for an operator.  I'd imagine that if I did continue with the initial automated system I would have been prompted for more personal, usable information.

****  The actual Discover Fraud Number is 1-800-347-2683 (1800DISCOVER) ***

I received a call from this number, looked it up, came to this page and decided to call back.  I was actually connected to Discover's official fraud prevention department, even asked them to have a supervisor call me back, which she did.

I pulled up my credit report, just to make sure that I don't have a Discover card, I don't!  She said that the computer may have dialed the number in error.  I know that if you still dial my cell phone number with an initial 1, you get a landline in Kansas City, if you omit the initial 1 you get my cell phone.

My advice is that if you have a Discover Card, or aren't sure, that you return the call.  I didn't give them any more information other than my phone number, which in turn they are able to verify your account status.

Conclusion:  Not bogus

It is an automated call from Discover card's Fraud Prevention department.  The calls were to verify charges.  After checking here, I called 1-800-Discover..  I was automatically routed to the Fraud department. After I verified the charges, they confirmed that the automated message service had called..

I too got an automated machine call from this number as described above.  After reading the above comments, I called 1-800-347-2683 which was pre-printed on the back of my Discover Card. The person who answered my call acknowledged that Discover had called.  They transferred me over to the security department.  The security department looked at their computer and said that in a most recent gas purchase which I made after hours, the gas company had "pre-authorized" an amount of $75.  I replied that I had purchased about $30.  She expects it will be fine.  She explained that the gas station does not know how much gas I would pump, and so the gas station computer preauthorizes a larger amount, which she expects to be reduced by the gas station to the actual purchase amount, and she expects this will happen automatically on the next business day. She said I can check my next statement for this transaction, but it should be fine.

I had missed two calls from this number, so I researched it (here) before they called back.  The recorded message said it was from Discover, and asked me to verify some charges.  Since I was suspicious, I hung up and called 1-800-DISCOVER.  Sure enough, it was them and somebody had been charging to my card.
Calls from this number are NOT part of a scam, but if you're uncomfortable like I was, just call Discover Card yourself.  Somebody may very well be using your card and it won't cost you anything to call them and check it out.

I also got a call from this number, and it was a SCAM. An automated recording listed a credit charge for $1 (UPS) and said press 1 if correct and 2 if you didn't make it. I pressed 2 and was transfered to a live person. She asked about 4 charges today (7/20), including one for $800 and something, and I said they weren't mine. She said they were going to close the card and I would get a new one in 7-10 days.

I called 1-800-DISCOVER and they DID NOT HAVE A RECORD of this call (they said they would definitely have it on my account if it was true), my latest charges did not include the ones above, and they said it was probably someone looking for information from me.

I also received 2 calls, and one message.  I called Discover via the 800-DISCOVER number and they DID verify that their fraud department called to verify card use.  I suggested they add the 800-950-7542 number to their FAQ section on the website.

This number is a SCAM!  It is NOT Discover's Fraud Prevention!  Do not give any information to the scammer...call the 1-800-DISCOVER number and they will verify it for you.  I gave Discover this number, and hopefully the scam artists will be stopped.  They are trying to get your information!!!!!
