Charitable calls and political are exempt from the Do No Call list, and always have been. You have to speak to them directly to remove your name from their list.
Xeitgeist 2013-12-02 16:31:56 Unknown
The picking up and hanging up won't do anything for you. They'll keep calling until they decide to give up on the list of names and numbers they bought - nothing to do with you. Most charities farm out calls to for-profit centers that make their $$ drumming up donations. All it means when they stopped is they dumped the list, which they'll do as a matter of routine.

Called asking for a Mr *Something or other* I told them it was a wrong number, then was told its not a personal call and they were looking to talk to anyone 18+ to take a quick survey. I told her we're on the do not call list and not to call again. Maybe it's a good thing I sound younger than 18 even tho I'm nearly 26 or she'd be trying to get me to take her survey!

I am an 80 year old man ..... I get a call EVERY SINGLE DAY and numerous times at night from these S.O.B.'s --- the telephone number that show up on my Caller I.D. is the one that is listed above, however, the caller name is listed as "UNAVAILABLE" I do not take calls from parties that are listed as "UNAVAILABLE" and as soon as I see that it is this type of caller, I quickly pick up the receiver of my telephone and place it back in it's cradle, thusly disconnecting the call ---- BE VERY WARY OF SUCH CALLERS AND REPORT THEM TO THE DEPARTMENT OF CONSUMER FRAUD ---

Am i the only one that thought what you said makes no sense.
Arlene 2013-05-09 14:55:32 Unknown
Getting these phone calls means the DO NOT CALLL REGISTRY is good for s***.
Rob of NY 2013-05-03 14:28:22 Telemarketer
Started off by telling me he is calling for the Special Olympics. Great organization, however most callers tend to be "professional fundraisers" that keep anywhere from 10% to as much as 80% of the money raised. Hung up ASAP. And that's assuming this is not a total scam. I called back the number and listed for any way to be removed from their list. None came. I conclude that this is more likely a scam.
Terry Toto 2013-04-25 17:54:49 Unknown
My Daughter is the global speaker for special olympics in suffolk county ny. They never call private homes for donations of any form. My daughter has been with them over thirty years this is all a scam.

Constantly harrased by the number 800-952-9419 on my caller ID at home phone while I am at work. Contacted the number listed by one of your other submitters of 866-544-4880 and spoke to "Jennifer". I asked to be removed from her calling list and she appoligzed for the calls and told me I would be removed from their list within a "few business days". We will see if this stops or if I get increased calls because they sell my number to another whole list of telemarketers/scammers.
ken 2013-03-23 22:34:57 Unknown
Sorry but they are not. They are exempt.
D M 2013-03-23 22:04:04 Unknown
800 952 9419 called me today. I didn't answer, they didn't leave a message. My number is on the Do Not Call List, they are breaking the rules as far as I'm concerned.
a-noy-ed 2013-03-11 17:31:40 Unknown
called me today I answered the phone the woman addressed me by last name and started the pitch about special Olympics. I did not let her finish the first sentence, I hung up and added the number to block calls.
one or two more weeks of calls like this I will buy the phone that blocks up to 50 calls, it will be worth the money.
Kplan23 2013-01-31 11:50:11 Telemarketer
They've called a few times. Never leave a message. Now they're blocked. Have a nice day.
bob 2013-01-28 14:53:20 Unknown
Because it is a Robo caller and a scammer doing it. Neither are legal and could care less about the Do Not Call Registry. It is only a list and does not block calls from or for anyone. Only lawful and legitimate actual businesses will honor the Do Not Call List. Like a Stop Sign. The lawful will obey, the unlawful will not...
Boi 2013-01-28 14:44:22 Unknown
how is it that they are allowed to call our unlisted house phone when we are on the 'do not call' registry?

I got a call from this phone number for the first time today. I didn't recognize the number so I didn't pick up. They didn't leave a message so it must not be important.

Second day in a row I've received calls from this number.
I filed a complaint with the FCC at http://www.fcc.gov/complaints. The form takes a few minutes to fill out and you can file a complaint against three different numbers. I think this is the most effective way to deal with this problem. If you file a complaint with the FCC, be sure to submit the link to this thread in the complaint form. That way, the FCC will be aware that the caller has done this repeatedly.
I've filed complaints with the FCC before, and they will send you a written response to your complaint, indicating they are investigating.

I received two calls today from (800) 952-9419 but did not answer. No message.
At a minimum, a complaint should be filed with the FCC at http://www.fcc.gov/complaints. The form takes a few minutes to fill out and you can file a complaint against three different numbers. I think this is the most effective way to deal with this problem. If you file a complaint with the FCC, be sure to submit the link to this thread in the complaint form. We need CRIMINAL penalties against the companies that are profiting from these calls. Follow the money, slap them in jail, no one left to outsource to overseas boiler rooms, problem solved.
Since they are operating across borders it should become a federal felony and should be handled by the FBI under the RICO Act.
These calls are coming from call centers in Costa Rica and India and they are using spoofed (false) numbers, which in itself is illegal. They do cold calling for or sell the leads to numerous companies in this country and they know that what they are doing is illegal. Tomorrow this same number may be selling Cruises, Timeshares or Security Systems, but if you follow the money it usually ends up in the hands of an American LLC. Keep complaining to the FTC and FCC, and start bugging our politicians to pass laws to make it punishable in criminal court instead of handing out fines that they don't pay. Another course of action is to contact phone companies to find out why they won't block spoofed numbers. With today's technology that should be an easy thing to do, unless they are somehow profiting from the use of their systems.
Robocalls are illegal unless you have given them prior permission in writing (not worded into some small print contract from a 3rd party) and are absolutely illegal to a cell phone. The Telephone Consumer Protection Act permits individuals who have received certain unlawful telemarketing, such as junk faxes or telemarketing calls, to sue the violator in state court where they may be awarded up to $1500 for each violation. People should continually file complaints with their Attorney General?s office and also file with:
http://www.fcc.gov/complaints

If enough people keep complaining then maybe something will get done. The FTC has already taken action against some of them. See:

So order Caller ID!
angel 2012-08-14 15:11:53 Unknown
What is the worst is not having caller ID. You miss a call, then have to punch in *69 only to find it was a number you don't recognize and probably never anyone you wanted to speak with in the first place. Plus you get stuck with the $.75 plus obligatory taxes and fees for each time you simply want to find out who has been calling whether it's a friend or relative ir some dumb greedy telemarketer/politician/fundraiser.
Robin 2012-08-12 13:58:33 Unknown
Please stop calling me!
ZOE 2012-08-09 14:20:21 Unknown
I disagree. If we call them back, they can say that we have done business with them in the past and thus they are not covered by the (hardly useful) donot call government signup program. Most people say they dont' answer anyway, so why waste our time?
pookie 2012-07-31 22:46:04 Telemarketer
they use the SO as a ploy so not to get intoruble with the DO NOT CALL registry, orgaizations like that are allowed to call even if you block you number. However, last week I got a call from a company that does marketing for all kinds of things. I turned them in since they are NOT organization allowed to make the calls to DNC at least in NY.
I just called that 866 number mentioned above and they claim to be removing me off thier list. Ever since I switched to Vberizon FIOS that's all I get ate these calls! They must be selling your number to marketers
