was called by 800-961-9830 the call was a 2 minute automated speel about lowering credit card interest rates and offered an opportunity to press number 1 to talk with an agent.  I pressed 1 and spoke with Ron who identified himself with MCS and said the automated calling system was part of a boiler room operation to identify suckers naieve and stupid enough to imagine that a company wanted to help losers lower their credit card debt payments.  I explained to him that I did not care about their scam but that I simply wanted them to stop calling my phone number.

Pre-recorded voice, says "blah blah... reduce your credit card interest rate... press 1 to continue...". Since I'd just negotiated with my credit card company to reduce my interest rate due to good payment history, I thought it might have been legit.

Was transferred to someone who mumbled really fast in broken "call centre" English (I was once inclinded to think that speaking comprehensibly would be a pre-requisite for working at a call centre, apparently I was wrong...) ... so I asked 3 times which company this guy was with, and got the exact same pat answer all 3 times "MCS Credit Card Services, we work for both "Visa and Master credit cards". (yes, "Master credit cards"!) So... I thought "ok, this company might be hired by my credit card company to reduce my interest rate."

Anyway -- the guy proceeds to ask me about my loans and stuff... and says that I must be paying 18% on my credit cards (which I'm not, as my rate is much lower than that)... and then when I say that I don't carry a balance anyway because I pay it off every month, the line went dead without a single word... he hung up on me!

Oh - and by the way -- I AM on the Do Not Call list!

Called me at 10:30am - very loud recorded message trying to get me to switch credit cards.  Misleading intro made it sound like it was one of those fraud warnings.  (something like "We have information concerning your credit cards.  It has been brought to our attention that....")

called me about 11:40.  Nothing on the line, so I put the phone on my amp and played them Ghost Riders on the Line.  I'm on a do not call list, will have to find out if there are some penatlies cause I understand they're not supposed to call.  I have no symphathy for auto dialers.  I've talked to my phone service about blocking, but they are generally unhelpful  Telus.

The number when called back is a mail box for MCS - which is full.  Yet MCS's web site says there are fake telemarketers out there scamming people using their name.

I answered their call and then pressed 1 to talk to a human voice that told me who they represented in some broken English that was hard to understand. Told them vehemently that I did not have any of the named credit cards. They said they would not call again. I replied hotly, please don't.
Low and behold they called again they called once again. So what to do now? I am getting up to three or four of these such calls a day and it is a complete nuisance and waste of time. Can't there be a way to stop this?

Got a call this morning from this same number at about 11:30hs. as I was on the other line. I called them back and listened to an automated recording that identifies them as MCS.

I've Call Privacy on my line and I also run a program called CallZap which blocks any numbers I enter in it. So they are now in my database and the next time they call the line will be disconnected right away.

Cannot wait for the "non-call" list be available in Canada. It may not resolve the problem 100% but I think it will help a little.

I recieved this call at 3:25 p.m. today. It is long distance. That is all that was displayed. The number was 800-961-9830. Of course, as usual they would not leave a message. My answering machine is always on. Pretty sad that these calls have to make ours and others lives so uncomfortable. Too bad it can't be like years gone by where you had the luxury of a telephone and appreciated hearing it ring because you knew it would be a welcome call from a friend or relative. Not anymore!!!! Makes one want to get rid of the phone, doesn't it???

Received a call from (800) 961-9830 today.  Called number back as sometimes, not always, you will be given a number to call to be placed on a don't call list.  In this case, I received a message saying it was "MCS" and to leave a message but the mailbox was full.

Ladies and gentlemen,
If you take a few minutes to search on the Net about this topic, you can quickly realize that the Credit Card scam related to gifts and low interest rate offers has been going on since at least, 2003. I've read enough on this subject to come to the conclusion that these call centers (wherever they are located in the world) operate without any fear of being caught. They cause hundred of thousand dollars losses daily to the credit card companies and guess what? The credit card companies pass their losses to the users who are…you and me. As of today, these pirates call centers are still operating in full force across North America. They have found the loophole for escaping from FBI and RCMP. The typical “model citizen” usually reports the fraud to the attorney or local police. I have news for you. You can file as many complains as you want to the authorities, they just can’t catch them! You can threaten of reporting their annoying calls to the phone companies, you can swear, being rude, vulgar with them – They are the ones controlling the game. They just hang up (laughing) until they receive a call from the next gullible person (and the wheel keeps turning). Whatever you do or say, you won’t be taken off their automated calling list. I have to admit the heads of these scam acts like a computer virus. They are very much up to date with the changing law enforcement techniques and like a moving target, they disappear in the field.  You can find numerous blogs and discussion forums related to this scam (this one is one of them). For every thread on the Net that exposes their illegal activities, they have members posting a message denying complains of people who got ripped off. They introduce contradicting information in blogs in order to confuse people who are unsure the legitimacy of their offers. They have fake web sites, fake names, fake addresses, etc. Based on these facts, I think the only thing that can be done is to interfere with their practices. How can this be done? By “putting a stick in their wheel", hitting the weakest spot – their need to grab personal information from you. I’ve been practicing for quite a few times now and you’d be impressed by how patient they are when they feel that they have you as a fish on their hook. Again, the only power you have over them is to spend as much time as you can to waste THEIR time. This time you spend with them is time that they can’t use for screwing other people. From reading in some threads on the Net, here is what I started doing: the principle is to play the game of being interested by their offer, providing fake information, pretending, acting, and creating delays. I hear you say that you don’t know how to reach them because whenever they call you, your call I.D. shows: 123-456-7890 (or any other spoofed phone i.d.). Didn’t I tell you they were smart? Here are a few numbers that still work as of today: 1800-501-0100 (to reach the vacation trip scam) | 1 888-786-6201 or 1 800 943-3250 or 1 800-961-9830 (to reach the MCS credit card interest rate scam). If you need more numbers you can with a little effort “google” the name of the organization along with <1-800> in the search field and it should pull more numbers to call to. Finally, here is my recipe for a great "obstruction" session upon these scammers: 1) take a hands free phone (portable is even better as you can still conduct you home activities) 2) get them to go through their entire sales pitch by encouraging and acknowledging every once in a while 3) make it last as long as your time permits (they are the one assuming the charges of the “1-800” communication). 4) When you feel that they suspect your “game” (or when you’re bored whichever comes first), find a nice and polite way to tell them that they've just wasted 15-20 minutes (sometimes more) of their precious time stealing other gullible people. I guarantee you that you will get some reaction at the other end of the line. Give them a ride and flood their phone lines! Make their life as miserable as they do to it tor us. HEARING THEIR FRUSTRATION IS A GREAT REWARD AND PURE PLEASURE. Don’t be intimidated if they threaten you of anything, they are totally harmless. I can’t wait to hear feedback.
