Call your financial institution(s) and ask them if you did have a returned check.  They will be able to tell you if you did or didn't.  Having worked in a bank myself, I do know that if you had a returned check, you would have received a notice in the mail within 5 - 10 days advising you to pay the nsf fee and bring your account current.  If you didn't bring your account current, the bank would merely stop access to the account until it was brought current.  The banks don't wait months or years to notify you of this.  They also don't arrest you for this, unless you've been actively committing fraud by writing checks all over the place when you knew you had no money in the account.

Private investigators are NOT involved in collection efforts, other than to locate people.  Once the the PI found you, he would give that information to his client; the PI would not be mailing you a letter telling you to contact HIM to resolve the situation - so this is a scam.

However, I would send them a letter certified mail/signature/return receipt requested, telling them that you do not acknowledge this debt as valid and that you are requesting they mail you - per the FDCPA - documentation proving that you wrote this check and that it was returned unpaid.  That documentation should include a copy of the check written.  If they refuse to send this information to you, then you know that they're trying to scam you.

Once again, if your bank(s) cannot find any nsf item, you do NOT owe anyone.  I would also take the letter to the USPS because they handle mail fraud.

I have had to deal with them prior and after doing a lot of research and getting my attorney involved I was advised to look up the Georgia Secretary of state and had to look up the company name Georgia check recovery and come to find out they where a legit company. My next step was to contact the bank and come to find out I did have a returned check I thought it was paid but all that showed that I had paid was the banks return check fee and the check was not covered so all I could tell you is to check into as I did.

This is the whole letter I recieved today. I called them of course being worried about it. The lady was instantly rude!!! I had no idea what this was. I gave her the case number and she said i owed 148.47 for a incident that occured in 2009. I was shocked I asked what it was for and she said a bad check. I asked how much it was originally for and she had no idea. she says it looks like it maybe for 25 or 30 dollars. And that I had to pay it by Thurs. I said well I only get paid bi- weekly. This was my off week. She told me to borrow it from someone then. I told her I had no one to borrow it from. She then said well have you ever been arrested or had a warrant for your arrest before? I'm like no.. She then said ok have a good day and hung up on me... WTH.. I called back and the person that answered I said why did you hang up on me. She stated she didn't and put me on hold. I then got the same rude lady that h ad just hung up on me. She stated she didn't hang up on me. She said you stated you couldn't pay so I will start the paper work to proceed with their attorney and put a warrant out for my arrest. I told omg it is supposedly 25 dollars. I most certainly want to take care of this. But you are not working with me here. She stated they sent numerous letters and I didn't reply. I do not remember getting any other letters from them.  I think this is some sort of scam the more I thnk about this and read on here.
Please advise... Help

I just received a letter with a badge number from a private investigator. It said I had to call no later than 3pm to avoid criminal charges.
Called them & they said I had a bad check from BP gas station from 2009.
They had check number but could not tell me how much check was written for, just that I needed to make a payment today of an overall fee of 400 dollars. I said I needed more detail than that & she said we'll just start the warrant papers. I called back to speak to a supervisor & she hasn't called back. I live in Wisconsin so how could a debt collection/ private investigator send warrant papers out?
I'm very frustrated. This is the second time this week something like this has happened to be. I'm Kay curious how their getting my phone number & address?

We received a letter stating we owed money for a bad check and were going to be sued from Goergia Recovery and I got suspisious because I knew I didn't have any bad checks out there. I do all my banking online and would have known this. I googled Georgia Recovery and read all the complaints about it being a scam. My husband received  a voicemail today on his cell phone saying we were being investigated. Once again I googled the phone number and low and behold it's Georgia Recovery!!!!! What I want to know is how they got my husbands cell number? They have there ways!!! I hope this warning will help put these people out of business and I also hope I don't have to hire a lawyer if they won't leave us alone. You can't trust anyone anymore I guess.

Just got one of their calls stating one of my checks didn't clear from several years ago!  First I've heard of it!  Forturately, I work at the financial institution where my account is & was able to search back in the records & found that it really did clear my account.  No surprise there.  They did offer on the phone to clear to "bad check" immediately with a charge card number.  How generous.  Seriously people, how do you sleep at night????

Stephanie what should happen as a collector? The first thing is read the fair debt collection act, original and revisions. Legally you have to tell a person what company you are calling from and not threaten your customer with legal action or calling their employer.  Then when they call you back you legally have to provide proof of debt via mail within thirty days or leave them alone.  If you were legit stuff onthis board would not bother you because you would know that you are doing everything legally.

Maybe your company should check their facts and collect a debt the legal way, then people wouldn't be complaining about your place of work.  There is a difference between debt collection & harassment.  It is harassment to threaten to put a warrant out for their arrest.  It is also law in most states that if a person questions the debt it is your job to prove that they owe it.  Sounds to me like the people here just don't want to be insulted and harassed.

See this link for a case that was brought against them.  It states that they tried to settle it out of court to avoid a judgement against them.  In the end they had to pay attorneys fees due to violation of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act

Mr. Attorney,

You really might want to checks up on what you are saying before you plaster accusations on a public website. These can be traced back to you since you want to be big and bad and say lies about something that you know nothing about, but yet you will not say who you are???? Makes me wonder where you got your law degree.

Thank heavens for the internet so we can check scams out such as these.

PEOPLE BEWARE. THIS COMPANY IS A SCAM!!PEOPLE BEWARE. THIS COMPANY IS A SCAM!!!
Stephanie, for one you can't purchase food, besides groceries, with a check and for two, I'm an an attorney and I have gotten MANY complaints about YOU & YOUR Company. Actually, I just received one from a client in reference to your company's illegal and fraudulent activities. In my LEGAL opinion, it is your best bet to get things straight with WHATEVER you are doing before YOU and YOUR employees face FEDERAL PRISON TIME. Sooner a later, enough of these complaints against you and your company will result in legal action. AND For the record, I contacted BBB's legal department and you DO NOT have a GOOD track record. You have more than 400 complaints against you (and the number may be greater, if everyone who received a letter from you filed a complaint). You THINK you have a GOOD track record at pursuing check writers, but your business is not in good standing PERIOD! . As far as telling people they will have a warrant for their arrest, thats up to the state's attorney. YOU or YOUR company has NO LEGAL RIGHT to tell a customer that kind of information nor can you issue a warrant and YOU or YOUR company CANNOT press charges, ONLY the company who receives the Bad Check can. You know what I am saying is indeed true facts. If you don't want your company to go under investigation, i suggest you STOP what you are doing.
