This is legit. The company is HireRight and they do background checks for prospective employees. They may be calling you to verify a reference or to verify more information regarding your employment application (educational history, address, work history, etc...)
Source: I'm in the hiring process and my employer uses this service.

An actual American called this time and left a message to confirm the employment of a former employee. I liked this employee so I was nice and faxed in the requested information (job start/end). They also requested salary history, which I declined to give.

These guys are actually legit. They just called to verify stuff for me, and I was expecting them to call. My new employer told me they would. Now, do they have people who speak English? That would be nice.

The circumstances of the call is pretty much the same as above. Says he is calling from: (sounds like Hi Right). Says call will be recorded. When asked why calling to verify employment he has called 2-3 times a day. Goes straight to H.R. therefore he is probably hanging up without leaving a message. He continued to argue with me with a heavy accent I could not understand what he was saying. I asked him not to all again. I find it hard to beleive he has not gotten the verification if indeed his call is legitimate. As many times as he has called; I know someone has answered the telephone.
You cannot be to careful these days especially with all the fraud being perpertrated.

Hire Right is an employment verification service. They aren't scammers or spammers, but simply trying to get info on former or current employees. If they are calling you and you don't have employees, they may have been given a bad contact number by the job seeker.

called twice. left a long message, then sent a fax.

Received a call on our business phone from Luperia (heavy accent) at HireRight wanting to verify employment. The 'employee' name was obviously from India. When I told her she had the wrong number she wanted to verify it by the social security number. I told her I know the name of every employee from day one and that person was never employed here, she wanted my name, etc. to document our call - I hung up on her.

This company does background verification checks for many American companies. If you applied for a job recently, I would suggest taking the call or you may get a negative or incomplete report to a potential employer. Yes, they are offshore and may be in one of many countries and their English may be great, or just so-so. Many people lie on their applications and that is why some companies get calls about workers that never worked there. They got caught. The sad part is that the callers work for very little money in bad work environments. Thank God every night this is not your life. Show a little kindness - they just want to feed their families the same as you or I.

They just called me on my cell phone for the 2nd time in 12 hours so I blocked the number. Problem solved.
My landline is my business number. If they were truly doing employment verification, they would have called my business number.

These people call my phone 1-2 times a day looking for employment verification. The accent is so heavy I can't understand them and their phone cuts in and out. It's very unprofessional to call and leave the last 4 digits of someone's ssn on a voicemail. I don't trust them and refuse to give them any information!

Thank you. I just delete the message that is inaudible.

I've gotten a call from this number twice today. The first call I missed; the second was a woman asking to verify someone's employment with a not-for-profit I once interned with. I couldn't understand the name of the person whose employment she wanted to verify. When I told her I wasn't an employee with the not-for-profit, and that I'd only been an intern with them a couple of years ago, she started to ask me to verify my name. I cut her off (having already Googled her phone number), told her I wasn't going to give her any information, and that I didn't want her company calling me again.
I'm not sure if this call was legit or not -- I do know someone who recently used me as a reference, and the not-for-profit I interned with was mentioned in the reference information. However, I've already spoken to someone in HR at the organization interested in hiring my friend...so I'd guess these HireRight guys are bogus.

Called looking to verify employment information for one of our employees. I took a message. Very thick accent. Said she was with HireRight. The phone number came up as NARMS background screening program.

They need to hire people that can speak English if they want a response.
