AMS is American Management Systems, based in St. George, Utah. They are a debt collection agency. They use a number of agents located throughout the state, who usually call from their own cell phones, or business locations.

You most likely received this call because someone you do business with contracted AMS to collect a past due bill.

Just recieved a call from that this morning

"ARS" (It might have been "AMS") couldn't understand the lady

Whatever you do, dont confirm you are the person they are trying to speak to. Just ask them who they are, what company they work for, and what they want. As soon as you confirm its you, thats when theyll log it in the computer, and use it against you in court with the company saying "yes, we contacted him and spoke to him directly"

whereas if you dont say its you, they can't do anything

its a collection agency, im not sure who i owe the money to, but im only in debt to a couple companies

Received call from 801-336-4697, but my calls such as this one, now come with the City/State in the caller id field.  Prior to Oct 1, I got many of these calls (various different numbers) with <unknown> in name field, but after Oct 1, all now come with City/State (many match up to the ones I had chased down earlier).

My suspicion is scam as we have no outstanding debts to be called for so they may have used our number for someone else (they chase down anyone with like names).

All of these calls come as auto-dialer "dead ringers" since there is never anyone at the other end when I answer.

Several calls a week with no messages left.  Not a good way to run a business over the phone if you ask me

Well is is a SPOOFED caller-id number, as it rings as "busy" when you attempt to call back.  Perhaps the collector from AMS who posted above can answer why a "legitimate" collection company has reason to spoof caller-id

Do your homework. MOST of these companies are scam artists. This is one of them. I have been in contact with the FCC regarding several of these companies and have been advised by them not to give any info at all. Some have even thankfully been shut down.
No offense, but, like I said, do your homework. Especially if you are going to give out advice!

You most likely received this call because someone you do business with contracted AMS to collect a past due bill.

Also, it is legal and very common to verify identity by asking for the last four digits of your Social Security number. You wouldn't want to give anyone the entire number, but many institutions use the last four digits. In fact, when you use a credit card, the payment slips and back records usually identify the transaction with the last four digits.

This was a legitimate call - your best course of action is to respond and find out who thinks you owe money and take care of it.

Lady called from "AMS" claiming I had a past due bill and needed the last four digits of my social security number.  I don't think so!
