I got a call from this same number.  Same story as the others.  He was a soldier, stationed at Ft. Riley, trying to get home for a funeral.  He had attended our church about 3 years ago. He needed $187.00, and he would go home and pay us $300 once he got his money from home.

I told him we were not able to help him at this time. The whole story was off.

Same story, but I must admit, that I went with a gut feeling, and did not adhere to protocol.
I got a call from this number yesterday, 10/09/12 and he told me that he was stationed here at Fort Riley (I am in Junction City very nearby) That he was on leave due to his fathers death, he was here for a funeral, his wife and three kids were with him. His truck broke down in Overland Park and was in the shop he needed $217.00 to pay the mechanic, named "Bill Sanders" so that he could get his truck out of the shop.
At that time, he would drive back here to Junction City Kansas and re-pay the debt.

He also stated that he has a "57" Bel Aire that his father left him and was going to donate it to the church.

He got away with $217.00 from me, and I did contact the Geary county police department, the K.B.I, and "Money Gram" from Wall Mart.

Long story short, this guy is a scam.
May he find redemption in our Lord.
Between now and then, be good stewards brothers, and remember that we will all stand in judgment on that final day.
...Pray for this lost soul.

October 5 2012 10:30 a.m.  Very same thing happened to us today.  Second story... Sgt. Brad Smith... etc.  We thought it was probably a scam and checked here.  Needed money for repair on his vehicle... just attended his father's funeral in Wichita.

SCAM ALERT
A man called the church last week, claiming car had broken down in Columbia, MO.  Gave his name as Michael - a Sgt. stationed at Ft. Riley.  He also gave a local address where he lives.  Said he had attended our church about 3 years ago.  This raised suspicion as we are a small congregation and pretty well aware of anyone who has been in our worship services more than once or twice.  He asked for money to be sent via Walmart Moneygram.  When pressed for more information, he became defensive, which raised suspicion.  We didn't give him any money.
Today, got a call from the same number, this time said his name is Sgt. Brad Smith.  Gave a different local address.  Car is broken down in Wichita, KS.  Again claims to have attended here about 3-3 1/2 years ago, and wants us to send money via Walmart Moneygram.  Needless to say, we aren't giving any money this time, either.
