This is about the 3rd time in as many years that I got a call from these people for my now long-deceased father. He had a very common name and I think they just have the wrong John Smith (not his real name but just as common). A woman with a very soft voice (hardly could hear) said, "may I speak to John Smith and I said "no" he's not available. Then she asked what my relationship is to him and I said "he's my father." This woman launched into a series of questions about how I'd like to set up payment etc. I said "you need to talk to my father, not to me." I gave her his plot number in the veterans cemetery, wished her luck and hung up. I blocked the number but I see she's called back twice already.

Just talking to them doesn't reopen the debt. Admitting you owe it is another story or making payment arrangements will reopen the debt. Learn your states statute of limits and stick too it. Never ever admit the debt. Ask for a debt validation letter with all the supposed business contact info and contact the original business. 99.9% of the time they cannot produce everything that's needed.

Do what I do...Tell them i'd doing the five knuckle shuffle and ask, Would you talk dirty too me so I can shoot a load? I do it all the time in different ways. Their too f****ng stupid to realize that they call the wrong numbers. People that owe depts for years and years, do they really think people keep those numbers? A***OLES! I have no issue with people that have those depts, hard times are among us all. I have no pity for these parasites, THAT UMMM, BUY THE DPET LIKE AN A***OLE, only to then have to harass innocent people trying to collect a dept they brought on themselves. More laws need to be put in place. LIke a law saying, If you knowingly call someone, who's told you you're not the person their looking for, then you have to not only clear the dept, but pay that person double what it was.

So this Portfolio Recovery Services always calls. The story is that I am admin that works at a building where I get at least 20 or more numbers that roll over to me if no one answers they number that this place is actually calling. So unfortunately, blocking this place is not even an option. So after 2 years of telling them that whoever they are looking for does not work here, now I just go along with it. :) I say I am that person. They start w/their spiel about what I owe and ask if I would like to set up a payment. I always say No, that I don't want to pay my outstanding bill, and that I don't care what they do. It's hilarious because the caller gets all angry and accuses me of charging up credit cards w/no intention of paying. And I Just agree w/them and tell them, Yes that's what I did, what are you gonna do about it. It's actually very entertaining and brings me some laughter to my otherwise dull day. :) Keep 'em coming guys.

I have a debt with Capital One from a $200 credit card limit when I was a teenager. The card was stolen due to my wallet being stolen. Have the paperwork from the police report and fraud companies. Portfolio Recoveries is attempting to collect $800 from me. This debt is 6 years old. If I was going to pay this, I would have 6 years ago. I get calls every other day from a new number every time. Portfolio Recoveries..... I refuse to pay!

Once someone talks to them, it re-opens the debt. Best not to answer an un-known number.

I have received constant calls from this number. No message is left, but it happens all hours of the day and night.

Having been getting calls all this week from this number and a multitude of others. Was finally home to catch one of the calls. I thought I would have a bit of fun, Tom Mabe style, with the caller by answering, "Pope Command Post."
There was stunning silence on the line for about 15 seconds. Then the caller finally said, "Hello?"
I replied, "This is Pope Command Post. Go ahead with your situation report."
The caller was totally stunned! "Where have I called?"
I replied, "You have reached the Pope Command Post at Pope Army Airfield."
Their reply, "This is not Joella Johnson?"
"No madame, you have reached Captain Major (sic), the duty controller in the Command Post at Pope Army Airfield. Who is it that you wish to speak with?"
Their reply was, "We are looking to talk with a Joella Johnson."
Then I dropped the hammer on them, "Madame, are you calling this person about an overdue debt? If so, you have just violated multiple Federal laws. First, you have called a disinterested third party. The fine for this act is $5000 and 5 years in a Federal prison. Second, you have called a classified Government telephone number. The fine for this act is $10,000 and 10 years in a Federal prison. And since this is the 15th call this week from you folks about this person, the Air Force Office of Special Investigations (OSI) has already opened a case file on you. As we speak they are finalizing their telephone trace on your location. So, within the next 4 hours you can expect a Federal Marshall to be showing up at you door with an arrest warrant for you and everyone else on the premises. Have a nice day!"
I then hung up and nearly wet myself while trying to get to the bathroom because I was laughing so hard!

I also report each call to the National Do Not Call list which apparently they only add to their "Do Nothing But Waste Taxpayer Money List".!

These scumbags can't take the hint that they will not get through to me. My carrier only allows blocking of 12 numbers but I purchased one to block 1500 numbers. If they don't have the courtesy to identify themselves they are blocked automatically. If they are lucky enough to get through my answering machine answers and if they do not leave a message or ask for someone I have never heard of they are also automatically blocked. The simple touch of one button will block any call I want to block. I do not owe any debts and pay my phone bill for a phone to place and receive calls of my choice and not for some scumbag to play with.
John 2014-03-26 01:40:38 Unknown
Unfortunately that is probably verbal assault. Please don't give them anything to use against you! I use an android app called Mr Number to screen these jerks.

Send them a cease & desist letter via certified or return receipt mail. File complaints accordingly. They are in violation of FDCPA & TCPA laws.. Keep a notebook, keep any messages and go for the throat. This company has other threads here as well under many numbers. You may wish to see a FDCPA & TCPA attorney.

For over SEVEN YEARS these people have been calling for the person who used to have my cell phone number before me. For the first year or so I would answer and tell them they had the wrong number, since then they've been going into my blocked caller list. That list is now over 200 numbers long and growing. Uh, hey, Mr Stephen J Post, wherever you are....thanks for leaving me harassed by your old debts.

Yes, the Portfolio Recovery nitwits are relentless.....I would like to ask if anyone knows of a law that prevents me from answering the phone to say..."Go F*ck Yourself"....?!?!
Joy 2014-03-15 20:01:03 Unknown
Portfollio Recovery- this is a scam they buy old depts then try to use scare tactics to get money from you. If you have an old dept you would only deal with the company themselves. NEVER GIVE THESE PEOPLE ANY PERSONAL INFO OR MONEY!!!!!! Just hang up on them or if you recognize their number don't answer. This is a scam. They are calling me about a credit card dept that is past statute of limitations another words this dept is no longer valid
Joy 2014-03-15 19:49:36 Unknown
