I answered it saying, "Hello?". The quiet sound in my earpiece then changed to a loud background noise like a person was sitting in the middle of a phone bank. I hung up before they could get a word out.

Yes, Advantage Cable Services Inc (ACS) is affiliated with several cable companies in the US and is a legitimate collector on their behalf.  On calls we always say "This is ACS calling on BEHALF of your cable company" - there is nothing deceptive about that.  We have multiple phone numbers - one or more for each cable market area - all are legitimate call back numbers.  We take payment by Credit, debit/EFT, or Cash at a payment center or at the door.  We do not affect your credit rating nor do we hound you.  Just say no once and we will not bother you again.  The Cable company may further the issue, but ACS will not.

Our outbound calling ANI (caller ID) is configured correctly to display our call back phone number.  If you are receiving any text on your caller ID other than just our phone number, then the problem is in the recipients phone company.  Some people, especially on some cell phones, may only see the state that we are calling from.  This is normal.

They called me today, and said they were from a company handling collections for cable companies, and that I needed to make a payment to avoid termination of service. They amount they said I owned didn't sound right, and didn't account for the payment I had just made. I knew I still owed for just one month, and they shouldn't be calling me. I told them I couldn't pay today and would call Comcast directly.
