I got a call from this # @ about 215pm, stating it was a security call, that my TMC? ATM card had been deactivated for security reasons, press 1 to reactivate. When I called the # back, a recording stated the # I dialed was not in service.

this number called my AT&T cell phone, which i didn't have on me at the time. i have my cell phone on my resume, but i only take calls from my own area code and a couple of the surrounding ones; 817 is not one of those, so i wouldn't have answered it anyway. any time i get a call on any of my phones that i don't recognize, i Google the number, and it usually ends up being a scam, as so many others have noted.

Got a call from this number just now. Got suspicious immediately, since it said my federal credit union card had been compromised. I don't have a federal credit union card. I live in Washington, DC.

I did not pick up and they did not leave a message. I live in DC and have AT&T.

RELAX FOLKS, it's probably some 15 year old kid in Romania doing this with a couple of crappy old computers and a Skype (voip) phone line. You card isn't in danger, just don't give them the number, or the expiration or the pin.
The whole thing sounds CRAPPY, and many words are mispronounced. Let's face it, these people are lazy and stupid. They've found a listing of phone numbers in a set area (and yes, you can buy a bank of phone number listings, and several can be found on the web...even some of those crappy phone books ..you know the ones that are really crummy looking by the "off brands" list our numbers in an area.....are listed on the web). So, they call a town of 15,000 and one or two morons will actually put in their real account numbers because they're S-T-U-P-I-D. Then the kid (or morons) at the other end can put them up on black hack sites and sell them for a few dollars. It's a job.
The poor guy who's phone number has been SPOOFED is not part of this. No more than the credit union is part of it. No more than your card is actually blocked. It's all fake, and bait for suckers.
What you can do, though, is put in a fake card number. The system is looking for the first six numbers to be in a certain sequence (the first 4 identify the credit card -- 5 is Mastercard, 4 is Visa, 3 is American Express, etc. The next three identify where the card is issued. A common sequence for the US is, for example, on a Visa debit is 4128. You can copy your first 6 debit card numbers and then add any combination of numbers, but I like 1234567890, because that was the famous string created by the credit card companies for ADVERTISING, so no one uses that string. And, then add an experation date 123 1111 whatever you want, and then add a pin. I like 0123 or 3333. Doesn't matter. (and thats the other thing, these bozo's are only looking for a 4 digit pin number, even though many credit unions and banks have gone to six. Idiots!)
Put in numbers, and make the robocaller stop calling you.
This set of calls and the one back in February are very different, though. Different automated voices, and different sequences, so I think it's actually out there -- as information -- and a variety of people are using this to torment us.
But, please, folks, get a clue. It is NOT your credit union. It is NOT your card. The phone number has just been chosen at random. It's all FAKE. And, no one is going to do anything, because no one is going to take the time to chase them down. Welcome to the modern world. We can look forward to being bothered by a teenaged pimple faced kid who is trying to see if they can snag a credit card number that works so they can buy something on Worlds of Warfare.....please! Don't be stupid here.

They called my boyfriend's phone this morning. Apperenlty, they're targeting close to home, since we live in the 817 area code. He didn't answer, and they didn't leave a message. I Googled the number for him, and found this page. Hopefully, they won't call again.

My husband and I's cell phones both received a call at the same time from this number telling us that it was "Mass Bay Credit Union Security Breech". It asked us to press 1 to access the security breach and we hung up. Crazy that they called both out phones (they are on different pland, mine is a work line and my husband's is a personal account!) at the same time....a little scary actually.

JUST GOT A CALL FROM THIS NUMBER and was so hugely confused by the message that, in addition to being sick for the past week, I paused long enough to look at my mom and repeat the message to her, before even contemplating what to do. By the time I could even think about whether I should respond or not, the line hung up on me. I attempted to call back and received a message that stated that the line "was not a working number." No clue what scam I just accidentally avoided, but am hugely relieved!!! This is the second attempt I've experienced this year of scammers and criminals (the other being from CraigsList.com). What world are we living in now????

I just called AT&T to report the number and they said that they can't do anything about it or investigate it. But the customer service representative said you can call the police and they can investigate it. This is certainly a scam, thanks for those of you who have reported it!

I too received the infamous call from 817 688 7853 telling me that an ATM card had been deactivated.
My contacts tell me that the call originated in Texas and as I live in another state this is an interstate matter that falls under the purvue of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The FBI can in a minute or less identify the subscriber to that number. Accordingly, I have brought it to the attention of my contact.
As the caller is shown to be phishing for personal information, which is a crime, I hope that we soon hear about an arrest and conviction. In any event the calls should stop very soon.
For the record, the time and date of the call is recorded onThursday, June 10, 2010 at 14:02 hrs. My service provider is A.T. & T.
The trail to be followed is to those which have my mobile telephone number and that's only a few individuals and business. The other potential links are with the: (a) Credit companies one of which I had a secured Internetl contact less than an hour earlier and one of which is also located in Texas. Other suspects are the companies that offer ID Theft protection.
| FBI Informer 2011-06-06 20:59:46 Unknown |
By reporting it to the FBI. It shouldn't take more than 5 minutes to identify the parties behind this phishing!

I received two test messages from "Mass Bay CU" saying my account is blocked. The phone number to call on one is 617-953-1095 and the second 617-963-1095. Both are blank message lines. I DO NOT EVEN HAVE AN ACCOUNT AT MASS BAY CU. I called Mass Bay Credit Union and they said it is a scam and they are investigating it.
