I keep getting calls (6 a day each  from 2 different numbers).  I never answer but they won't quit.  Today I got a call from citigroup inc (have had a few from citi lately).  Again I don't answer.  I don't owe anyone any money so don't know why they would be calling me.  I am getting tired of listening to the phone ring over and over and over every day.  I am on the no call list so don't know how/why they are calling me.

It is indeed Sears calling. I paid the bill on the day it was due so it automatically generated a late fee and the phone started ringing. They call and hang up about 5 times a day. The worst part is if I call back and give them my acct# they say that they can see the payment and they are sorry for bothering me. Then it happens again.

Sam -
"Citi" is a blanket company name - they supposedly "manage" accounts for a variety of creditors.  And yes, they're still a royal PIA.  When different "people" call and you do actually answer you have to tell the same story again that you've been telling before and my question/statement is usually something to the effect "the story has not changed that you have entered in your system, assuming the previous caller made the proper notes" and then bye-bye....

I do know the folks making these calls are only doing their job - it must take a person with a really hard heart though to make the calls as a robo-caller though and so many of these calls come across that way.   When I have actually answered the calls I do manage to block their scripted call though by telling them up front that I know I owe the money, I know how to make the payments when I am finally working and have a dependable income to commit to payment plans and no, I do not need to talk to a supervisor or specialist because the answer will not change.  That does kind of fluster them a bit and I can usually end the call on a good note. That's not to say though that there are some who keep asking over and over and over and over and over....you get the point....can you just make a payment of $XX?  When I can finally interrupt them quick enough to get them be quiet for a second my question is usually something like "what part of "I don't have the money right now to make ANY payments to ANYONE" are you not understanding?".  Sometimes it works, sometimes not but hanging up is always an ultimate end to the call....not the most professional way to end the call but the means of last resort.

I get calls all day from these people, they ask for me and then hang up before I even get a chance to say another word!  I called them back, the representative on the other end has no idea why they keep calling me, they have no record of anything!  How do I stop this?!!!

calls every 30 min. for 2 hours beginning at 7pm.  no one identified themselves..I do not continue to speak when I initially answer and no one responds...harrassment..
This is typical of companies trying to find family members...using local or toll free numbers.

I received a call earlier from this number. I called it from a friend's prepaid mobile phone. My call was answered with a message (non-human) saying "Thank you for calling Citi. Your call may be monitored for training or quality control purposes. I terminated the call after that, so as not to brun up any of my friend's prepaid minutes. BTW, they never left a message. When are these callers going to learn to leave a message if they expect a call back?

I understand what you are saying BruinsRock, but you are thinking very one sided. Sure, people should indeed pay thier bills when owed. No brainer. But as most of you know, sometimes unfortunate things happen. You therefore fall behind one or 2 payments. Calling the company DOES NOT stop the calls. It does get you connected to someone who will note in your file that you have worked out catching up, but it DOES NOT stop the calls. The auto-caller system is tied into program used by the various banks. Unless the status of your account indicates "Current", the auto dialer kicks in. This now happens the day after your due date with most credit companies. Unless that flag is marked current again, the calls continue. Is it harassment? Absolutely. Calling before 8am, after 8pm, weekends and at your work is indeed illegal. (Call the office of your attorney general). Why does it continue? Because not enough people do anything about it and the lawmakers, politicians dont have time for our rights as humans. Bottom line. No mystery. So, all you can do is try to pay your bills on time, call the company if you can not and make arrangement and have them send you a letter confirming those arrangements, then start blocking the calls. Assign a name to the number, like CITI-DICKS and have a laugh every time your phone rings. Most of you wont get charged as you dont answer the phone. Let them spend the money hassling you. Its humorous to see how many times a bank will call even if you called them to tell them you will be a week late. I had 32 calls in 5 days by Citibank after I called them saying I would only be a week late, accepted I would pay the late fee as it was my fault for being late, and they agreed, and even waived the fee for calling in to tell them. Yet, 32 calls later......You get my point. So, BruinsRock...Think outside the box a little and know your facts and consider that the person complaining "may" be legit. Maybe not, but non of your business. Offer friendly and help advice, dont be a coward and attack someones gramatical limitations. Thats just silly talk :-)

Caller ID:  CITI - Caller asked for "Genevive" last name 'same as ours'.  Husband stated no
one here by that name.  Caller asked for our phone number.  Hubby pointed out the obvious,
CITI had placed the call so he should know it.  Caller said autodialer doesn't provide that info
for him and he would remove our number if he knew it.  Hubby told him we do not give ANY info
over the phone.  We will add to our Call Blocker.

you are an idiot!!  you think it is ok for the credit card companies to hide there identity by bribing the phone companies to show a state instead of who is actually calling. they are using an  illegal robotic telespamming machine. call your politicians and demand a stop to this illegal activity!

This call, which I received earlier this morning, left a generic (computer-generated, NON-HUMAN) message stating they were from Citibank, and that THIS IS NOT A SALES CALL.!!! I once called back this type of message, and it turned out it was a sales call. I refuse to call back any number that leaves a computer-generated message, and does not reference data that they should know if they have legitimate business with me. HIRE A HUMAN BEING THAT WILL LEAVE NON-THREATENING MESSAGES IF YOU WANT PEOPLE TO RESPOND!!!

I don't understand your anger over this. You're acting like they came out of nowhere and demanded something from you that they aren't legally entitled to.

You state they should burn. You call them morons then wish the worst for them and that you want them to lose their jobs and have sudden illness. Really?

1) Calling someone a moron while using poor grammar and punctuation is just laughable.
2) YOU owe the debt. How is it their fault that YOU didn't pay?
3) You call them "stupid bank". Is that because they gave credit to us when we were credit risks? If it's because they're attempting to collect on the debt you owe them, remember that YOU signed a contract saying you would pay. How does that make THEM stupid?
4) Wishing someone ill for doing a job is just immature.

I sense that you're the type of person that blames the police when you get a ticket. Do you blame "big evil corporations" when gas prices go up? Do you feel that the "working man" just doesn't get a fair shake?

Pathetic. Pay your bills and you won't have to worry about this stuff. If you CAN'T pay yet, then go research how to stop the calls while you work on how to eventually pay. It's free, but it does take some time and effort. Best of luck to you.

It's easy to stop the calls.

Get their address. Send them a debt validation letter by US mail w/return receipt requested. Request that they provide proof you owe the debt, proof they are licensed to collect in your state, proof they are legally able to collect debts.
HERE IS THE RELEVANT PART: State that they may only correspond with you by US mail. However, you understand that they may sometimes need to communication VIA phone, so they may ONLY call you at XXX-XXX-XXXX on Thursday between the hours of 3PM and 5PM (obviously change that to days/times convenient to you). They may NOT call your work, family members, etc..
Any contact outside of this written notification is a violation of the Fair Debt Collection Act pursuant to Federal law.

Dave Ramsey's "mytotalmoneymakeover" website has a great template for this. It's free in the forums and was drafted by users, this isn't an advertisement for him.  You can also google but why reinvent the wheel.

The point of this is not to get out of paying your legitimate debt, it's to stop the harassing calls while you work on a solution to get it paid off.
