LOL! It happens..  Don't let them get to you! Tell them to go pound sand the next call and tell them you have filed complaints and then block them if you have a call blocking device.  If you don't, consider getting one, they run around 60.00 - you can google them.

Extortion Scam Related to Delinquent Payday Loans

Washington, D.C.
December 07, 2010  FBI National Press Office
(202) 324-3691

? filed under: Press Release

The Internet Crime Complaint Center has received many complaints from victims of payday loan telephone collection scams. Callers claim the victim is delinquent in a payday loan and must repay the loan to avoid legal consequences. The callers purport to be representatives of the FBI, Federal Legislative Department, various law firms, or other legitimate-sounding agencies. They claim to be collecting debts for companies such as United Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Net, and other Internet check-cashing services.

According to complaints received from the public, the callers have accurate data about victims, including Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, employer information, bank account numbers, and the names and telephone numbers of relatives and friends. How the fraudsters obtained the personal information varies, but in some cases victims have reported they completed online applications for other loans or credit cards before the calls started.

The fraudsters relentlessly call the victim?s home, cell phone, and place of employment. They refuse to provide any details about the alleged payday loans and become abusive when questioned. The callers have threatened victims with legal actions, arrests, and, in some cases, physical violence if they do not pay. In many cases, the callers harass victims? relatives, friends, and employers.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

?is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
?refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
?asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
?exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

?Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.

?Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.

?Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.

?Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.

?Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.

Call them back and let them know you're on to them. They have the nerve to get mad and serial call you stating they're putting  gps tracking on your phone and still try to pose as the police. And every time you call they'll answer differently.

Called my cell and work  number.   Had my  ssn and dob.  Stated his name was officer Mark Harris and I owed a debt that if i didn't pay by a certain time a warrant was going  out for my arrest. It's a scam. Call your state attorney general and give them their  info and file a complaint.  Also make  a police report.  Impersonating an officer with the attempt to defraud is a felony.

Well good. I'm glad he reads here! Tell him I said hello, bring the verifiable info and post it up if they are legit. Demand a debt validation as per the FDCPA law sent via hard copy in the US mail. Neither phone,fax nor email are legal proof of.  You also want a verifiable legal business name and legal street address that can be verified ala google maps, website and BBB.   With so many names given and nothing turning up on any of it, I think you have a extortion scam operation and recommend you report them accordingly to the FBI,FTC and other agency's.  I seriously doubt you will get any verifiable info out of them.

Well, apparently this Mark Harris character reads this page because he called back about an hour ago and specifically mentions the post I left after receiving his first two calls earlier today. So now I have three voice mails from him. Anyone know how many it takes to become harassment? Maybe if he'd have left details about his claims, instead of threats, I would have called him back. Nothing from nothing is all you will get from me now Mark.

Just got two calls from Mark Harris at 844-784-2420. First voice mail states a gps tracker was just added to my phone...(idiots) Second voice mail says he's with the US Processors and that several felony complaints are on file against me. This is such crap. He's scamming and/or just a debt collector who is guilty of fraud himself.

I just got a call that showed as "Private Number" on my caller ID, so I let it go to voicemail. The man who left the message identified himself as Angel Morales an investigator with the State of Florida and said it was for or regarding a Stephen Opoku. I don't know a Stephen Opoku and I see that I am not the only person who has heard from Angel Morales.

Received a call saying they had a warrant for my arrest well three warrants. Guy asked if I received a fed ex package to my address and I said No.(they didn't send one of course). Then he proceeded to put me on hold and this rude person got on the phone saying I lived somewhere that I didn't. He became very angry because I was laughing at him. He said I would serve 76 months in jail and my kids would be taken away. First off I don't have kids. Lol what a joke these people are. I work in law enforcement and I would not receive a phone call stating I have a warrant. So sad.

Scammers, they say they are going to throw you in jail for a debt over 10 years old (time barred and illegal tactics).  They claimed they were going to require $18,030 as a bond when the Sheriff (posing as my husband) was on the phone with them.  They would not listen when they were told that what they claim was a felony in my state was not.  They also did not listen when he told them that a LEO must serve warrants in this state.
