How do you figure I knew exactly which FTC help page to toss your way based on one threadbare sentence, hmm? It's because the "served at work / process server / hot check" threat has been reported thousands of times in connection with fraudulent debt collection, and the threat is known to be bogus. Your problem, assuming you're not a shill in the role of victim, is that you're getting all your information from one source, the hustler on the phone who aimed to confuse and upset you with "locator fees" and "legal documents" and "fraud charges" having *NOTHING* to do with how an honest debt collector does his job.

You need to step back and compare what federal law says against what these crooks told you, which was essentially "pay now and we will save you from bad things about to happen". The CFPB and FTC and countless watchdogs do not want you handing over money to strangers on the phone for a supposed debt the collector doesn't want to validate. Never ask ''How do I pay?'' Always demand, ''Prove I owe!''

Debt Collector
This is ridiculous got call from 1-855-847-8505 when pushed asking more questions transferred from Stephanie to the case manager to the floor manager Noah.... he gave the direct # of 844-841-4025 ext 538 to call him back after I said I would investigate as I never took this loan out (again from 2012) couldn't tell me from whom or when exactly just that I was in data base, was able to give me information based of web searches.... I contacted my bank who said they are aware of more of these scams coming up lately.... If you owe money, they would have contacted you way before now and in writing....DON'T GIVE THEM ANY OF YOUR INFORMATION!!!!

Um ... no.
Did you not read the information at the link Resident47 gave?
Process servers do NOT call before they deliver the legal papers!
Those "papers" must be on paper ... not email or texted.

Contact the people from whom you took out the loan.

NO YOU DON'T.  Did you receive anything in writing???  That is the only way to contact you if you did owe money.  Serve you??  NO.  A server does not call in advance.  They just show up unannounced.  You are dealing with a thief & liar.  If in doubt, contact your local CIVIL courthouse.  They are threatening you which in itself is against the law.

I contacted them and the lady stated that i owed them 600$ and did i have a debit r credit card to put it on and get the matter taken care. She said once I am served with the legal documents they can no longer help. My response was i dont have 600$ but i will see if i can borrow it so she put me on phone with her supervisor and he stated that he can take off 200$ which is the locator fee so i will only have to pay 400$ but then went on to say if I am serve my documents there is nothing he can do. Stated the claim filed against me was a loan i took out in 2012 and they have tried to get their money but its showing that the account has been closed. So i have fraud charges filed against me.
