Called Jan. 9th, trying to collect on a student loan. Don't have a student loan; suspect phishing.

They called and fraudulently identified themselves in a voice mail as "The State of Illinois" ... no details as to why they called.
I intend on filing a complaint with the BBB, as well.

ISAC cannot garnish you money if you earn under a certain amount.
The will not negotiate your loans down to accomdoate your current finances.
You can send them a cease and desist letter to ask them to stop calling. If they continue to call, tape them it is a violation of the law.
Currently, they do not garnish income but that policy may have changed.
Good luck. There is no latitude with them.

I receive frequent calls from a number in the 847 area-code. No message is ever left on my cell phone. I do not have any loan that is past due and I am very curious as to why I am being contacted by ISAC. So, I called the number back just a few moments ago. The phone was answered by a person identifying herself only as Julie. No business name greeting. When I said I was calling in reference to these phone calls she said, "let me get you to that department". I was promptly transferred to a gentleman who identified the department as the Default Prevention Department. This guy asked for my name and SSN. Stupidly I suppose, I provided that information. He then dropped off and the call was transferred to some call-center operator who played dumb. She said she had no idea why someone would call and asked for my name and number for a callback.
I now suspect fraud and will be contacting appropriate parties to report this situation.
My first action was to file a complaint with the BBB. I have also filed complaint with the National DoNotCall Registry as my number has been listed on the DNC since Nov 2006 and I have done NO business with ISAC nor do I have any outstanding debt that they would be concerned about.

This is Illinois Student Assistance Commission - where student loans go when they are in default. These people don't give a rats back side regarding the circumstances that you can't pay back your loan, they will continue to call and harrass you.

Called my employer looking for a Colleen. Supposedly from the State of Illinois. I asked what the call was in regards to and he said Education. Did not want to give me any information, then asked for the name of my company and hung up.
