Hopefully you did not answer your phone with that call. If so might want to change your number. They will be calling you forever. They have many numbers that they use to call and harass people also. Do they contact you by mail as well? If not get a new number.

I am BEYOND frustrated with Portfolio Recovery. We often get debt collection calls looking for the people who previously had our number. In every other case (and there have been many) we speak to a rep at the company, explain we don't know the person they're looking for, and that's that. The calls stop from that particular company within 2 days tops.
But not Portfolio Recovery, oh no! When they first called a couple of months ago, we followed standard procedure. We had to tell them twice before it stopped. Then the calls started up again about 2 weeks ago. I'd answer it, prepared to tell them they had the wrong number, only to get an automated "please hold the line while we connect you" before it would disconnect.
Finally a week ago today I took the time to actually call the number back after this happened. I stated to the representative that we didn't know the person, and the rep said they'd remove the number. HA! We still received calls every other day. Tonight they called again and I actually got a live person instead of getting hung up on. I asked how long it took to remove a number and he said "48 hours, but I'm looking in the notes and I don't see where we've called your number at all this week." WHAT?? He (once again) claimed they'd remove the number. I'm not holding my breath.

Some type of collection. I have no financial or collection problems but they call for someone I don't know. They don't leave a message. Sometimes leave busy signal type noise on the recorder which doesn't stop.
They also use phone numbers: 847-994-2550, 847-994-2553,847-994-2545. It doesn't matter if I tell them they have the wrong number. They just keep calling.

Numerous calls .. all time of the day. If you have Time Warner for land line provider, you can block the call completely.

I just called them and said: please stop calling me. they are calling for sonny and melissa. I have no idea who they are or how much they own but i told the guy take the number off the list or im gonna sue you for harrasment. I pray to God they will stop calling,

I called the Portfolio recovery customer service - they had my number from the previous owner. Ask to have your name removed and it should stop the calls. I got a new number and it was previously someone else's who owed like 1.36 or something ridiculous. But they should still be reported to the ftc. Sheesh.

I have no idea who these people are. Called before 8 a.m. and did not leave a message. When I read posts above and saw they are a debt collector, I am really confused. I don't have any outstanding debts so I do not understand why they are calling.

Calls my place of business-does not leave a message. I just sent them a cease and desist letter. When I receive the green card back from certified mail, I will sue them for violation of FDCPA

| HOW TO STOP THIS COLD 2011-10-29 16:50:24 Unknown |
These Cockroaches (no matter which kind they are..) called repeatedly when I got a new phone number a few weeks ago. I owe nothing to anyone. In any case, I have been perused by collection agencies a couple of times in my life. Her is EXACLY how to handle it:
Develop a firm policy of your own for once, that you will NEVER deal with them! (Don't tell them that, it will tip them off that it is you (if it is..) Just NEVER take their calls, and if you do pick up by accident, NEVER TELL THEM WHO YOU ARE! Tell them "I am NOT WHOEVER you are looking for, and WHO I AM IS NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS! (This is critically important!) DEMAND that they remove your number from their list! HANG UP! Be consistent every time with every detail here!
If they call again, GET FURIOUS! Tell them you have contacted local authorities as well as FCC and FBI. YOU MUST Be firm, consistent with every detail of this, and they will stop calling, because they will have no choice but to conclude they have the wrong number, or the person they are trying to scam is SMARTER than they are! They will move on. If that fails (and sometimes does) CHANGE YOUR NUMBER. It's that simple! You can also change your mailing address to a postal box, close your home mailing address if you are being mailed (or you can just drop the letters in the shredder too.) I never use my home address by the way. Think! Organize your life to protect against fraud.
But again, This MUST ALWAYS be the First RULE: NEVER NEVER GIVE YOUR NAME to Strangers that call you! NEVER ADMIT it is your name, IF THEY HAVE IT! This is the first CRITICAL step to stopping ID theft, fraud, and even if they are "legit" collections, NEVER DEAL WITH THEM! Never Never NEVER! PERIOD! ABSOLUTELY NEVER! Get a brain here! I hope I am clear, NEVER! If it's a legitimate call (such as your mother) they will get over it.
More often than not, IT IS FRAUD, NOT COLLECTIONS! They just want you to send them money, get your credit card, and bank account numbers! If you are stupid enough to give them your name, or just as bad, confirm your name, you will be stupid enough to be suckered into giving them your entire chart of accounts! Don't be stupid!
If it keeps up, and you refuse to change your number, even if you "think" you may owe someone something, complain to the above authorities - IT IS MOST LIKELY FRAUD and you CAN NOT KNOW FOR SURE! By most measures, COLLECTION AGENCIES ARE FRAUDULENT, even when they are "legitimate!" They lie, they decive, and they are professional scam artists,or they would not be doing what they do! NEVER DO BUSINESS WITH THEM! NEVER!
If you think owe a debt, settle it with THE ORIGINAL source ONLY, or in court ONLY!
If you think owe a debt, settle it with THE ORIGINAL source ONLY, or in court ONLY!
If you think owe a debt, settle it with THE ORIGINAL source ONLY, or in court ONLY!
If that source refuses to settle, DOCUMENT that you tried to settle! (Do it in writing, and save the responses, if you get any!) If they closed the account, write back and tell them "Due to so much fraud, I will only deal with you or a court of law! It's all you have to do!
If for some UNLIKELY REASON you ever end up in court (which almost NEVER happens) you can show evidence that you attempted to settle the debt, and it may either be thrown out or radically reduced. Then you can set up payments, or whatever.
This is the ONLY way you know who you are dealing with! THINK about it! How do you know a collections from a scam artist?? You are FAR better to deal with a court than a CRIMINAL Cockroach or Scam artist! It's all up to you!
Another note, that helps, and get off facebook! It's a scam artists DREAM come true! Use a fake name, if you must be on there, or other similar Data-mined websites!
Fraud, scams, and collections embarrassment mostly happens to IDIOTS. Don't fall into that category. While collections may "technically" own your debt, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO TALK WITH THEM! EVER! Only if you are stupid!
ONLY if you go to court (which as I said is VERY RARE) will you be required to "try" to settle the debt. It may be thrown out, reduced, or settle on very small payments. If it is a large debt, it may circulate from cockroach to cockroach collector, but if you have a brain you changed your number, right?
Lastly: If it keeps coming up again, talk to a lawyer about this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Statute_of_limitations
In 2 to 7 years, it will be illegal for anyone to harass you about it. (There will be exceptions depending on what country you live in and so on..
Above all, take a stand. Don't tolerate abuse from ANYONE.

I agree with all of these posts...I have had calls from area codes: 877-918-978-443-615-407-772-859-954-205-518-757-914-847 -602and 480 just to name a few.......all based from this number..........I have no idea why they are bombarding my phone with their calls.......today is Sunday and they have called twice already.........when is this going to stop ........

If they are truly harassing you, call the your local sheriff's department and report them. We did this once and a detective called the agency and took care of it after one or two calls. No guarantees from the sheriff's office, but they are willing to try. Good luck!

i get calls from 847-994-xxxx usually once a day, I get tired of their BS, so when they ask for me, i usually play with them, telling them to hold please... then i continue working or doing whatever for a minute or so, then ask who they are calling for, and again tell them "hold on, i'll look"... after 3-4 times, i tell them he (me) is not taking calls at the moment. By law they can not call after 9pm, so when they ask when he (me) is available, I tell them times after 9pm. When they ask who they are leaving the message with, I tell them "his financial adviser"

The most annoying point is I am paying them, they shouldn't be calling daily for a monthly payment plan. I've made 3 payments in 2 months. Leave me alone.

Also be aware that they use a LOCAL area code and prefix number to trick you into thinking its a local company or neighbor, etc. so you either pick up the phone or call them back. I have seen them illegally re-age a debt and report it in duplicate with different dates and account numbers on clients credit reports. They also will sell off a ten year old debt to another company who will try to re-start the process. Keep your credit files that show the legal date of deletion for future ammo against these guys and whoever they sell uncollectable debt to.

This woman is very nasty and insulting. Especially since my debt has been settled with the company through the law office of Harold Scherr back in Dec 2010. He represented First Equity Card Corp, he was very professional, they were polite, helpful and curtious. I do not know how this nasty, unprofessional outfit got my number. I refuse to answer the phone when I see the 847-994-2557 number.

These bloodsuckers called on Easter so I told them I wasn't home. They gave me a number and he referred to himself as "Clark". I asked for the company name and they told me. I then told them I would call them back on Christmas since they called on Easter. Shows up on caller ID as Franklin Park, Illinois. They call 3-5 times a day minimum, with their last call coming in at approximately 8:45 PM. I would do jail time before I gave these "people" a dime.
