Yes this does violate the law. No collection agency can tell you they are going to sue you unless they are an attorney. I suggest you call them back and tape record the conversation in hopes that they say something about wage garnishment, suing you or any legal action. If they do your attorney will eat them alive.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.

Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.

Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.

Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.

Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.>

it is a scam and I have dealt with many of these over the past couple of months. They are trying to scare people into paying them but I have actually called the original debtor and they have confirmed that they do not know these people or deal with them. Also, they refuse to send out anything in writing and don't even have the correct details of the debt owed. I am all for paying my debt but not to a company that is scamming me and won't actually apply it to my debt! I have reported them to the FTC and attorney general and I encourage you all to do them same so we can stop this crap! You can file a report right on their websites and it only takes a few minutes.

Don't let them freak you out. Just don't answer. Legitimate companies send bills and notices in the mail. If you do happen to answer, tell them to send you a bill of what it is and why you owe it and hang up. Or just tell them you have told them not to call and you are documenting every time they do, and to keep calling so that when you sue them you willl just get more. They'll stop. They did when I told them that. Of course a couple months later I started gettting calls from some other bogus agency who I imagine they sold my phone number too.. screw them. They are liars and frauds.

they are still at it---calling from several numbers and hounding the daylights out of me...I have tried to call them to stop the intrusion but to no avail...at least now I know to disregard the calls--I owe nobody anything and the message they leave makes it sound like I may be part of a class action situation that I may be part of...sneaky....

I get calls from this number. I may have a debt, i may not. My old boss used to bounce checks. Who knows where it was charged off from. I have old debts that have been paid. The thing is who the hell behaves like this and expects to get money from somebody. If they were a proper company they would tell you exactly where the debt was charged off from. Legally they can not do anything. Blow me take me to court for the money if i owe it. I once had a debt from  UK bank because they told me i couldn't made transactions from a non UK card to my other card. So in fact they were partly to blame. But i did pay it. I did get a letter and a phone call. And was in fact able to verify that.the bank had authorized them to collect the debt. So i payed it and and have the letter of discharge to prove it.  It as one of the other responders put it. It is. Intimidating. Harassing. Probably fraudulent.

This type of software should be made illegal.. I had one occasion where a debt collector harassed my mother for months. They never told where the debt was from. Turned out it was an old motoring that i thought i paid, and still believe i paid that was never purged from the system. They sent letters to my mothers house with charges for visits they never made.

II would have gone and looked at my bank records form that period but from what i can gather they don't keep records older than 7 years old. That debt was from 2004. Is re-emerged in 2012. Again it is not the fact of whether i owed money, what i paid or what i didn't pay. There are sometimes genuine reasons and genuine mistakes. It is appalling that these company's can stress people out by behaving like this. But anyway that's my blurt. Some w**ker in a basement spinning numbers. Who doesn't even have the balls to leave a real message It also appears that the tone and language of some messages seems to be threatening. Which is appalling when you have never even spoken to a real person. It is unacceptable. It is CRIMINAL. And they probably have ex cons working the phones  Jesus they could not even type my name right.

These folks are calling me at work.  I have no idea who they are or how they found my work number.  They have never once called my home number.  Want to find out who the International Asset Group is and stop them from calling me at work.  Same spiel as with others.  "must call immediately if you want to include your statement in our file etc."  This has been going on for two weeks.

We are a business and we keep receiving automated messages from this number for a person who is and never has been at our number. After calling the return call number provided and letting it ring over 20 times, a live person finally answered.
To get your number removed: 1) When the automated call comes in, write down the file number and name of person they are calling for.  2) Call them back at number provided and let it ring until someone answers.  3) Tell them they've reached a wrong number and need to remove it from their database immediately.  Tell them your phone number that they have been calling.  The person I spoke to confirmed the number by calling me back and said they'd remove it from their list.  Hopefully they do!
