Received a call in December and in January about a check fraud. The first call upset me very bad because they gave me a file num the first time and gave me a different one the second time. The attorney name changed to John Michaels from Christopher Jacobs falsifying information he had a temporary hold and failed to comply but they never tell you who the lender is or nothing. They say we refused to comply voluntarily and documents would be sent to the home and job. Ppl don't kno that could give somebody a heartattack or jus straight out die from the call they can be sued. I'm gonna look into the company and report them to the bbb.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.

Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.

Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.

Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.

Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.>

I was receiving the same messages as above and today they called to talk to the front desk secretary I work with. They told her that they were going to serve me papers and had to notify the business that they would be coming onto the business' property. They told her if I call 855-215-4138 that I could have the date they were going to serve the papers scheduled for a different time. Has anyone gotten anything like this? I'm not sure whether to call them back or not. Just worried in case it is legit.

These so-called people called my step-father playing that they were the courier service and needed to deliver papers to sign for a court case regarding a bad cheque. They terrified him and so I looke dup and talked to the guy who answerred the phone. I am not going to pay as the guy doesn't even have a website or pay portal.
I don't have a job, but maybe I can be like this guy and call up people and threaten them with holy hell so that they give them credit card numbers. Maybe he's in a basement or maybe he's a papr-legal. But then maybe I fricking Oprah Winfrey.
Really, is this what our country is about now. You spend time dunning poor or working or struggling folks for some bs piddly squat loan from a loan shark that charged 30% and you owe 314? Like I am aware you are supposed to pay all debts but I get very disgusted these days. I owe like two of these and already paid the big mega bank off on all the fees and overcharge. Such a wonderful capitalism creating wonderful opportunities for jobs and innovation. But I am supposed to always pay my debts I know this.

They continue to call me and say that there is a case against my mother. I called them back asking if they were a dect collection company and they state they are a "Litigation company". I repeated that they are a debt collection company and the a@@hole didn't respond. I told them they needed to remove my number from their system and the jerk indicated that "I won't tell him what to do". "I could call back when I had a better attitude and they could disscuss the case then" and he hung up on me! I'm pretty sure this activity is illegal all the way around! DO NOT GIVE THEM ANY INFORMATION AND REPORT THEM TO THE FAIR DEBT COLLECTION REPORTING AGENCY TO GET THESE JERKS TO STOP THEIR ILLEGAL PRACTICES NOW!

They called me and left a message but were actually trying to threaten a friend of mine with supposed "fraud". However, the message said they were gonna file charges against me and my friend's mother and have us picked up, too. Not sure why they would file charges against us since we had nothing to do with nothing. LOL Anyway, the guy that left the message was named Scott Matthews claiming he worked with some county legal service company and that he was gonna go to my friend's house and arrest her and if she wasn't there then he would 'call in reinforcements' and go to her place of employment of arrest her there. He also mentioned something about a packet that my friend should have received in the mail with all the info concerning the supposed court case. However, it's common sense that one doesn't receive a subpoena by mail...it has to be hand delivered by a process server or peace officer. Moreover, the legal company he claimed to work for doesn't have the authority to arrest anyone without proper orders signed by a judge and you have to have been given fair warning of the charges against you. In any case, my friend did some investigating because she didn't have anything outstanding and so she called the company Scott claimed to work for and they had never heard of him BUT that they did have several complaints against him and a woman named Jessica. So ya'll be careful...if they call and harass you or someone you know just report them to FCC. No debt collector is supposed to give any information concerning someone to another party no matter who they are nor are they supposed to leave detailed messages concerning a supposed debt. Also, some of these fraudulent collectors try to ask you for information such as your SS#, address, DOB,  credit card numbers, and want you to pay over the phone,etc....don't give it to them. Just tell them to send the information to the address they have on file so that you can verify the debt and if it's real or legit still don't pay with a credit card..send a money order, or cashier's check (not a personal check). I have heard they will try and place more money on the credit card that was agreed upon and once that happens it's hard to get that money back. Good luck :)

You can file abuse under the Fair Credit Reporting Act. It is enforced by the Federal Trade Commission. Contact your state Attorney General. And as also stated, go ahead and report them to the Better Business Bureau.
You can call your Attorney General's office with the information that you have acquired and get help.
Answer
The first thing I would recommend is keeping a journal of who you spoke to and when you spoke to them, if it is a phone conversation. If you have sent a letter, a copy of it and the date you sent it would be very helpful. Use this information to contact the Better Business Bureau. They can help with this. Their web site is bbb.org

Got a call from these people who gave a rambling taped speech about how a lawsuit had been filed against me last week (totally a lie), they had my social security number and my phone number (that is scary!) and I was to return their call by the end of the day or face additional charges, etc.  Nothing they said was accurate, I could not interrupt their speech, and though I kept saying "Please remove my phone number from your call list" it did no good.  I registered a complaint with the "Do Not Call" list but I have done that several times in the past and absolutely nothing came of it.  Does anyone know of an add-on machine I can purchase that will screen out these type jerks?

Did you get any subpoenaed papers?  Just wondering because they called me today and had my address and told me I had already 30 days to resolve from a packet I should have received in the mail.  I never got any such papers first of all then they call stating they are suing me for criminal charges for bounced payments.  First of all I never wrote checks after I've closed an old bank account to any pay day loans of any type.  And they had stated the district near where I live to tell me that's where they will have me go to court.  But never gave a case number of any kind which makes no sense.  But I had someone research this group and they are part of a trading/investor company.  So yes this is a huge scam of investors and this is how they make their money.  They claim to be a law firm but the name WMF is not a firm at all.  It comes up WMF Capital and had shown a New York location.

Ok I fell for this everyone and called the number and actually gave my cc#.  This is a trading company and investors because my bank fraud dept had to research it and this is what they got out of it.  So now waiting for my account to get money back.  If it;'s a lawyer they would not have an acct saying WF CAPITALTOA NY US.  This is a trading and investors.  Not a law firm.
