I got a call from a company called KAM. What is so laughable is that they said they were collecting on a check I had written in 2010 to my vet (to whom I don't owe a penny)! I told them they were full of it and hung up. They supposedly wanted $900 for a $14 check (although they didn't know the amount of the check). I called my bank and they had them on a list of fraudulent 855 numbers. They also suggested I change my checking account. I have outstanding charges on my debit account, so will have to wait until those charges have cleared before I change it.

The next day I got a call from a boy who said he was supposed to serve me with a notice of the lawsuit.  I told him that if he tried to do so, he'd be reported to the Federal Trade Commission along with his employer. Haven't heard from then again. I threw away that phone number, so I can't post it here. I was amused that they used a 2010 check to my vet, who uses a "pay as you go" process.  Cracked me up. I also, BTW, called the vet.  Their bookkeeper laughed her head off.

Company called me and was very rude and high pressure trying to tell me I had a bad check from 2010 and told me I would be served at work or home. I indicated I had taken care of that matter and was at work and could we discuss this after work.  I was told I had to deal with this minute or they would take my refusal to talk to them as a refusal to pay debt and they would send sherriff to my workplace.  I was told that i was  using "stall tactics" when I indicated I had records to submit showing I had paid for returned check from 2010. I was badgered and belittled and told I had to deal with right now or I would be served.  There is no way this is a legitimate organization.  I asked why I had not received correspondence in the mail and there was no answer.  Do NOT fall for this scummy company who obviously purchased old records and it playing on people's fear to get payment that will never make it to the original company even if you have not paid it and pay with them - they will take the money and run.

Got a msg from some woman named "Mary Smith" telling me I am being sued for bad check-writing. I call this company and they tell me it's a "bad check" from a payday loan company that was included in a discharged bankruptcy over a year ago. They are liars and scammers and there is no suit and no arrest warrant. It is a tactic designed to scare you and to make you think they are legit when they are anything but legit--they are the lowest of the lowest bottom feeders.

Exactly. Educating consumers is the key to stopping these scams:

Consumers across the country report that they're getting telephone calls from people trying to collect on loans the consumers never received or on loans they did receive but for amounts they do not owe. Others are receiving calls from people seeking to recover on loans consumers received but where the creditors never authorized the callers to collect for them. So what's the story?

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.

Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.

Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.

Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.

Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.>

Got one of those calls too!  A "Reverend Maxwell" called saying he had  several bad checks. He asked for a person whom doesn't live here . He left message on my machine twice. He gave a docket number that was partially blanked out in the message and said to call "FCC Associates" to speak to them about the problem. He stated he was in Bufford County??? The number was blocked where he called from. The number he gave for "FCC Associates" was 855-227-8828. Another scam I would assume. How many people will get scammed from this one?

I spoke to an Rep, and gave me the same story about me owing money. I asked for his fax #, and he got very defensive with me, and ask why i needed it. I am going to give it to my attorney and the attorney general, and then he said this call has ended. Then he threaten to take me to court, and sue me, I said ok, let me fax you my cease and desist letter, and he hung up.
I tried to cooperate, but they just wanted me to give them a payment.
THEY ARE A SCAM AGENCY!!!!!

They just left me a message saying that I lack the integrity to pay on bad checks. The last company that did this to me stopped after I reported them to the BBB. It seems to be the only way to stop the calls.

Just had a call from an absent number that left a message saying it was in regards to bad checks and that I needed to call this number before I would be served and have to appear. Any bad checks I've had have been in the past and taken care of as far as I know. Sounds to me from the comments above that it's not right but will try to call them and get info.

I got four back-to-back phone calls from a blocked number and on the 4th call they finally left a message. They threatened to have me sued and arrested but when I called, refused to give any additional information unless I provided a social security number. When I refused, they refused to even give me a mailing address where I could send inquiries to about what they were even calling for.
