They left a message and said they were Comcast. Left a phone number in Philadelphia, PA. Said I needed to get an
updated modem from Comcast and left me a website I needed to go to in order to secure a new modem.

YOU ARE RIGHT COMCAST SUCKS
Lisa 2014-06-11 18:28:44 Unknown
Not necessarily 'cynical', but not informed. When companies upgrade their internal architecture and systems, it often resuts in needing to do the same for their clients. If it was part of a long-standing budgeted plan that likely took years to complete, the costs were accounted for in their yearly plans and funds were allocated from existing customers' fees. Additionally, they are eager to get customers transitioned because they will intend to stop supporting the existing platform - this is a typical business practice to conserve revenue that is spent on maintaining aged systems. Microsoft does it too - XP, Vista, etc all being or been announced as no longer supported. Difference is you have to buy the new one.

This is definitely not a phishing attempt. Not sure why the comcast security team would tell you that. The message tells you to go to comcast.com which is a legitimate comcast domain. If this was a phishing attempt I'd be way surprised they were good enough to hijack comcast's domain name. I also received a letter from Comcast stating the exact same information, definitely not a security concern.

Phishing Scam.

855-242-2876 is NOT comcast. DO NOT GO to the website and put your information in - I contacted COMCAST security 888-565-4329 - the gentleman told me to ignore the website. www.comcast.com/deviceupgrade. It is Phishing. I just received my modem less than a year ago there was no reason to change out my modem.

Bob 2014-03-25 19:35:23 Unknown
Got a letter from Comcast telling me to upgrade my modem for a fee. If I want them to come it is a bigger fee. Now they are calling me. Why do I want to pay a fee? Screw them
John D 2014-03-20 14:28:02 Unknown
Well that's dumb: I already requested the upgrade and it's already shipped, and I'm still getting this call.
I don't see anything in the letter I got saying I would be upgraded to "Xfinity TV" or an extra fee in the new monthly bill estimate they gave me, but I'll look out for it when I get this thing.

Got a phone call out of the blue yesterday while I was driving and called back as message was garbled. The caller claimed to be from Comcast and wanted my phone number and proceeded to put out a bunch of bull about upgrading my Comcast modem. First she asked me to validate my phone number so I was a little suspicious as obviously my Comcast/Xfinity account number is not my Verizon cell phone number which she originally called me on. Next I was even more suspicious when I told her to send me an email as I was driving and she then asked me to confirm my email which I naturally refused to do as xfinity already has my email address. I then decided to lead her and asked her why I just couldn't go to me local Comcast/Xfinity cable office and exchange the modem there. She responded that my local cable office didn't have it at this time and this was "special limited time offer over the phone". I asked how did she know my office didn't have it as they have always had excellent service, and this is where she got slick again. "Please confirm your address" Naturally, I did not give her my address either just my state (I told her you have all my account information as you send me a bill every month use that address) naturally at this point she had to "talk with her supervisor again". Then she came back on line and told me that there were none available in my state at this time. WTF, I would think if you were going to problem to phish someone you could at least Google the white pages and know where they live or if you are actually working for COMCAST/Xfinity do you home work and have customer information in front of you when you contact them. But neither telemarketers or crooks are known for their smarts or work ethic and competence. End result, I will follow up with my local Comcast/Xfinity office to confirm validity of this offer as it is more than likely a phishing ploy.

I just received a call from this number on my cell phone. It's strange because my home phone is from comcast so there is no reason for them to call my cell phone. If it's comcast they can call me back on the comcast phone.
unkonate 2013-11-24 06:35:41 Unknown
All I know is this call WAS from Comcast and they DID want to upgrade my internet. They did a great job, didn't charge me a dime, paid for and provided a return box WITH shipping already paid on it, and all I needed to do was change it up.
So all I gotta say is NO I am NOT some butt-buttering jack-hole for the company, and in my opinion they did a bang-up job.
Carry on and whine on. I'm happy with Comcast.
Later.

if you think comcast is bad don't try att they are the worst
gh 2013-10-09 21:08:16 Unknown
No you're not. It's simply a modem upgrade. Already did it. Have no idea how you got into that agreement.
Ron 2013-10-03 18:12:14 Unknown
Be REAL careful getting that "free modem" they offer. You are agreeing to commit to a year of Infinity TV at $21.99 a month. I got the free modem, noticed the $21.99 charge on my bill and was told I agreed to the infinity tv when I got the free modem.
Alicia 2013-10-02 21:01:25 Unknown
If this for real you have to identify yourself or leave a message. Give your name/company name and call back number.

F*** Y** comcast - nuff said
Anonymous 2013-09-27 20:33:12 Unknown
This is a Comcast call. But, if you're a customer, you should have already received a letter in regards to the need for a modem upgrade. Just follow the instructions on the letter and ignore the call.

I got a message from Comcast on my answering machine asking me to call this number. The address they leave on the message, "1701 JFK Blvd, Philadelphia," is the address of Comcast Center, their headquarters.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comcast_Center_%28Philadelphia%29
They wanted to let me know that the modem I'm using isn't capable of the maximum speed currently available on the Comcast network, and that I should upgrade. The message was poorly worded and had me wondering for a moment if the address and phone number belonged to another one of their customers. Funny thing is, I don't even rent a modem from them. I own my own modem and it's the very latest Motorola SB6121 SURFboard with DOCSIS 3.0, which, I believe, is as fast as you can get on Comcast at the moment.
Tony 2013-09-26 18:53:10 Unknown
Comcast is going through a system wide upgrade for its internet speeds. It's true, if u have the old docs is 2.0 modem u will need to upgrade to a docsis 3.0 modem. The speeds are fantastic and we'll worth your time
Highly suspicious.... 2013-09-24 22:29:12 Unknown
Why in the world would Comcast be so eager to provide you with a better product for no money? Think about that. They are calling constantly to let you know about this upgrade. I find this highly suspicious. I have a feeling they want to get you hooked on something and then you will have to pay more eventually to keep it. I know this sounds very cynical but....
al 2013-09-19 18:03:22 Unknown
I am by no means a fan of Comcast ... in fact, I hate Comcast ... but this is a legitimate call. In my case, at least, they left a voicemail and when I followed up I found it was real. They have upgraded their standard modem (not router, as other commenters have said) to accept more in put and give you more speed, and ... if you have a DVR ... to allow you to record more stuff. If any of that interests you, you should follow up ... it just involves trading in your current modem, by mail (they send the replacement first, so there is no "down time") or at a local service office. It's all free, including the shipping if you do it by mail.
I am not surprised that there is also a marketing element to this ... after all, we are talking about Comcast ... but the basic call is legit if you ARE a Comcast subscriber.
Truth 2013-09-17 22:52:03 Unknown
Think you may have searched a wrong digit in what number you mean as this is a comcast aka Xfinity cable company number. Thats the corp office phone centers address. Its in the US just like the number and they are nationwide. They are swapping all older doci2 modems for the newer 3 version that handle the new speed ups to 1Gb
common sense is knocking 2013-08-28 21:16:49 Unknown
This is NOT a scam. All Xfinity internet customers were sent a letter in July offering an upgraded modem free of charge to improve internet speed. This letter was followed up by a phone call, from this number, to again offer the free modem swap out. I've upgraded my modem...it's definitely legit.
If you don't have Xfinity, the reason you were called is that one of their customers has provided YOUR phone number for their account at some point; most likely in error. Or a clerk at Comcast made a mistake while entering the phone number. The customer who lives in PA and has your phone number associated with their account received the aforementioned letter. It's not a conspiracy or a scam.
If you don't want any additional calls from Comcast/Xfinity in the future, contact them at 1-800-XFINITY and let them know about the erroneous linking of your phone number to this PA customer's account. They will gladly remove the number and contact their actual customer for a correct one. This fast, simple, and reasonable action will get you a lot further that posting a paranoid message on this website.
