Thank You for this posting. I called and got the recording and answered the questions. After I hung up and realized I had just given my SS number I freaked out. Your posting has made me feel so much better that it was Legit.

if you file your retirement application social security online. the examner will contact your by phone, e-mail or mail it they have to talk to you for any reason regarding your application.  the national telephone of social security administration is 1 800 772 1213 and it will show in your telephone ID.  Social security administration have several offices that review the internet application. if you feel this is scam feel free to contact your local social security administration in your area or call the 1 800 772 1213 to confirm this social security is calling you.

Got confirmation via return call; I called them at both numbers, finally got the original caller on the line, and we discussed at length the statements I put at the end, which she was reading back to me.  And, her response was within $2 of the estimate given on my SSA statement I got by going online myself, and on the correct date it would come (since they now space payments out) so I'm comfortable.  So, this is a legitimate number for Social Security Administration Workload Support Unit in Salinas, CA.

The gal was really very nice, and had no problem with me doing a series of verifications and calling her back.  Laughed about it, actually, since she said she had no problem with me hesitating about giving info, since it was a Saturday, and I had to give her my SSN as she wasn't able to give me the information to confirm as I had asked.

It is the SSA, responding to my online app for benefits.

They give a callback number of 1-855-249-4175 and/or 1-800-772-1213; the 800number is the one that comes up on the caller ID.  Had to have seen the original app, as there were statements at the end that no one but me would know about.

So, while caution is always advised, I think this is on the up and up.

I point out that the SSA only tracks citizens by SSN and uses other Personal information to correlate.  This is unfortunate for obvious reasons which make us identity theft hardened individuals hyper nervous.  This is not necessarily a bad thing.  The military for many years did the same thing until lately.  Now the military uses an unrelated trascking unumber on ID cards to elliminate possible overseight or gleening your SSN by unauthorized observers.

Before you call it a scam, you could try calling the publicized Social Security website ( ssa.gov ) number at 800-772-1213 or 800-325-0778 and ask the representative if your emailer and phone number are SSA employees and phone numbers.  If you wait is too long they will call you back on request.

ssa.gov is an official site. It's at 199.173.225.5 which is owned by:
Social Security Administration UU-199-173-224-D2 (NET-199-173-224-0-1) 199.173.224.0 - 199.173.231.255 or 199.173.224.0/21

I don't think it's possible to register a .gov domain unless you're actually the government.

I also received this message.  If this is not legit then someone has cracked SSAs security since the email quoted word-for-word the answer to one of the narrative questions that I had on my application.  would advise anyone who does not want to be contacted via phone or email about their application for SSA to go to the local office and sit all day or stand in line.  If you file electronically, you should expect to get electronic communications.

Apologies to Sally!  After a 45 minute wait, I got through to the SS office and they verified the call was totally legitimate.  I gave the ss agent the phone number and extension and he gave me the contact name of Crystal.  All is good and I personally am extremely relieved.  Best to all!  Whew!

I signed up for SS too, just before this call.  I also received a postcard in the mail for a SS benefit meeting which I signed up to attend.  I honestly believe the call was generated from the seminar and now I'm extremely suspicious.  Grrr!  Mean people suck!  Despite what Sally, above says, SS advertises that they NEVER ask you for your SS# over the phone or via email.  I'm thinking Sally works for the scammers.  The phone message absolutely asked for my name, phone, and SS#.  Please don't fall for this scam and report it if you know how.

Re-re-directed to call this phone number with extension 4015067/David Martinez. But this is an ugly joke as no live person ever answer at this phone #.  I was just directed to leave a message, to no avail, or call later as all the reps are busy now. Later when? After I'll get a stroke trying to get a resolution for retirement application. After 2/1 months my application is stuck with David Martinez. Many cudos for him!

BTW, in their phone message, they requested another # where they could better reach you, and did NOT request your SS# information.   I also thought that, but re-listened to the message and it was not required.  I think that the fact it was from SS, I automatically thought my # was requested - my mistake!

To bring peace to all concerned.   Confirmed that this call is legit - they are a branch of the Social Security Office, who can also be reached via the MAIN # (800-772-1213).  I also panicked when I left information without first checking and found your site - after the fact, which frightened me more.  However, it's always safer to be careful, especially in today's world.

I called the number again, and the agent recommended (for my comfort) that I call my LOCAL SS OFFICE to verify the callback #, extension and representative's name before continuing with my call.  IT ALL CHECKED OUT.

BTW, you may choose to ignore this call, however, it can delay your claim processing if you don't respond.  Also, an email was sent but not received because they had the wrong email information.  If contact by way of your provided phone # or email address is not successful, a hard copy letter will be sent to you.

If you do not respond, your claim may be delayed, or worse, may not be processed at all, depending on the nature of your claim!

This follows up my previous post.  Yes it was legitimate.  I called the main SSA number and was able to verify that the person calling me was from the legitimate claims processing unit in Salinas, Ca. Doesn't hurt to be too careful.  Should not have given out information on 1st try without verification even though caller seemed to know a lot of details about my case.

okay, folks, I went the LONG way to check on the number:
1-Search "Social Security Administraton" ==> http://www.ssa.gov/   wasn't sure it was OFFICIAL site, so
2-Search "United States Government Offices" ==> http://www.usa.gov/   which lead to:
3-Government Agencies tab: ==>  http://www.usa.gov/Agencies.shtml
4-Which lead to  http://www.usa.gov/directory/federal/index.shtml
5-http://www.usa.gov/directory/federal/S.shtml ==> page with Social Security Administration link
6-http://www.usa.gov/directory/federal/social-security-administration.shtml  ==> clicked on the direct link and came to:  (but this page also lists the 800-772-1213 number)
7-http://www.ssa.gov/  ==>  then choose "Contact Us" ... I selected English, which got me to this page -->
8-http://www.ssa.gov/multilanguage/langlist1.htm   which states:
"We provide free interpreter services to help you conduct your Social Security business. These interpreter services are available whether you talk to us by phone or in the Social Security office.

Call our toll-free number, 1-800-772-1213, if you speak Spanish press 2, for all other languages press 1, stay on the line and remain silent during our English voice automation prompts until a representative answers. The representative will contact an interpreter to help with your call. If your business cannot be completed by phone, we will make an appointment for you at a local Social Security office and arrange for an interpreter to be there at the time of your visit."

Here's a link to a different page where you can leave a message online or gives links for call, email, or write them:
http://ssa-custhelp.ssa.gov/app/ask

In conclusion, I'm 99.9% sure it IS the SSA trying to contact you for some reason.  Otherwise, someone went to a LOT of trouble setting up several sites and links, just to fool us.

I also filled out an application for social security and a week or so later got a call from 800 772-1213 and a message was left requesting call back at 1-855-249-4175 Ext. 4015051.  Called back and left a message and unfortunately left name and SSN and call back number.  I got no call back.  What a dumb move. Anybody know how to report and or recover from this stupid gaff?

I filled out an application online for social security.  A week later I recieved an e-mail supposedly from
Social Security Administration telling me to call 1-855-249-4175 and at Extension 4015088 so that they
could ask me a few more questions.  I wondered if it was a scam but called and the recording told me
to leave my name and social security number.  How dumb can you get?!   Unfortunately, there are probably
people out there falling victim to this scam.

The Soc. Security office in Salinas lists their number as (800) 772-1213. This smells real fishy.

I received a similar call from the same Caller ID number from someone named David. When he asked me to give him my Social Security Number over the phone I hung up.  I then received a followup email asking me to call him at the 855-249-4175.

I feels like a scam to me as well so I haven't called back.
