The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:
?is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
?refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
?asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
?exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.
If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
?Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.?Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
?Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
?Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
?Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.

Just because someones legal info comes up on a phone number does not make this legitimate nor does it justify making retaliation calls. The illegal callers are known to use actual identity's, real business names and numbers to spoof and hide where they actually call from. Phone spoofing is a fact and innocent people get harassed for something they didn't do.

They are getting sneaky. Now they are routing calls through local numbers. I live in the Denver and I kept getting phone calls from 303-500-1920, which says Hudson,Co. I finally called back from a landline and the pre-recorded message says "Thank you for calling URG offices..." I have told these people to send me a validation of debt via mail if it is valid (its not, I've never had a pay day loan) and they refuse. Beware now they are making it seem like someone local is calling. They haven't left a message but they have called 3 times today

These dorks are calling from a variety of numbers!
1) 888-511-4248
2) 855-256-4037
3) 855-678-5437
I'm sure there's more, but I just started jotting 'em down recently.

They keep calling mine and my stepfather number. Don't even know how they got his number but this is beginning to be very annoying! All they keep saying is I have an important legal matter with their company and the account number nothing else? Who are these people?

I keep getting calls from this number for my husband's ex-wife. They left a message one time, but after that, they have never left another message. The message was that they were an attorney's office and there was pending litigation against her. I have no idea how they got MY #.
Cheryl Hale 2014-04-04 19:05:59 Unknown
I don't know who this or what it's about. They are calling my ex-inlaw's and won't stop bothering them.

LKM 2014-04-03 20:49:01 Unknown
Same here. I'm not nor do I know Bobby Mitchell. I blocked the numbers they were calling from. They're a strong arm litigation/collection agency. They threaten to take your house, have you arrested etc.

I keep getting calls from this number for another person that I don't know. I waited until I could talk to a person. A woman came on the line and I told her I was not the person that they are asking for and to remove my number. She hung up on me and the calls keep on.

this company called me 9 times yesterday. They sTaTe They are you are URG. I called the company in Utah in it has nothing to do with this 855 number and this lady. I asked this lady what you urg stood for and she said its nothing. Okay but has tO be initialed fOr sOme name. She Said no. When you look this number up in a reverse lookup it is a number out of Georgia. Do not give anyone your Social Security or any information. She Said I had a poSSible judgement on me. If I had a judgement on me I would know through the courts. If she some legIt lItIgatIon offIce then she wouldn't be so snarky and hang up on people. A lot of these compAnies thAt you mAke ApplicAtion to sell your info. So much for the Privacy Act. Then This Type of company why is your info and tries to collect money. Also if A dAte hAs been written off and sold to a third party for pennies on the dollar to try and collect don't pay that either. I need to take the time and report this lady. If thIs was a legItImate dad you know about It because you would be notIfIed In wrItIng.
Monetta 2014-03-28 17:37:19 Unknown
Similar to what's been reported. I go a robo call from this number saying this was an attempt to collect a debt. Called back. Asked what the company names was. "URG." No, what does "URG" stand for? "It stands for nothing.Thats the name" (note that her voice didn't sound very professional at that challenge).
Any legit company will have a mailing address and a full name and a website presence that you can easily confirm online *******IF THE COMPANY CAN'T GIVE YOU A FULL NAME, ADDRESS, PHONE NUMBER, THEN IT'S A PHISHING SCAM. THEY ARE TRYING TO SCARE YOU INTO GIVING UP PERSONAL INFO TO STEAL YOUR IDENTITY. JUST HANG UP******

It's a scam. There is a legitimate URG, but this one is a scam # out of Ontario, CA. I called the real URG and they said it was not them calling me and explained the other one is called URG OFFICES out of Ontario, CA. They get a lot of calls regarding the other company and it's most likely a scam.

These idiots have called my cell number several times. When I try to answer, they hang up. I finally called back today and got a woman who had no clue what I was calling about, other than to say it was an "attempt to collect a debt". (I owe no debts that are "in collection", by the way). If they call back I intend to take legal action.
