Checking this suspicious number out now.  They offered no help identifying themselves.  They should know better.  Some authentication is necessary!  I will go through the whole process.

I took the time, called 800-772-1213 and never got through and had to leave the call after 38 minutes. I will try again tomorrow.  How this could be better done? Perhaps the email should tell you to go to the legitimate SSA websitet and log-in with your claims number and proceed from there. This email followed  four obvious Phishing emails (fake Wells Fargo and payroll scams) and did not leave me feeling very safe.  Too many scams and the SSA should know how darn shaky this approach is.

This is a valid number for the social security office in Albuquerque. Having submitted an online application on the main SSA website on a Thursday afternoon I received a call and an email from Michael Trujillo the following Saturday morning noting that he needed to visit with me about my online application before it could be processed. He knew everything about the application, and information that only a SSA agent could know that wasn't on the application, and was very helpful. He informed me that I could have my payouts start a month earlier than I had requested without losing any benefit amounts. He also assured me that the information would be entered today and payment would hit my account on Wednesday. I know the woods are full of scam artists, but that is not the case here.

I received an email from a man claiming to be with SS and requesting I phone him at this number.  Before I could even return his call, he phoned me (I left my cell phone number when I filled out the online app).  Very first thing, he wanted my SS number which set the alarm off in my head because I've always heard "do not give that info out over the telephone unless you initiate the call".  I told him I would call him back after confirming that he did work for the SS.  He told me to call the 1-800-772-1213 number.  So, I phoned the SS at  that number to confirm the man was legit.  I held for 20 minutes and had to hang up.  About 6:50 PM, the man called me back to see if I had "checked him out".  I told him I had not and I would call him when I was ready.  He said he would call me again today.  Today, after a 43 minute wait, the lady who finally answered told me she couldn't tell me if the man worked for them.  I told her he said he was out of the Albuquerque office and I gave her the 855-257-0343 telephone number.  The lady said that the number was not shown as a SS telephone number.  After checking my file, she said there was nothing there to indicate someone from SS was trying to reach me.  She told me to call Albuquerque and she gave me their number.  I called Albuquerque, went thru the whole "electronic rigmarole to be told that all operators were busy and they were transferring me back to the general 800- number or I could "try your call later".  This is ridiculous...and FRUSTRATING!!!

Whether or not this is a legitimate SSA number doesn't matter.  I asked them to verify who they were.  I asked them to give me the first three digits of my SSN and I would give them the rest.  NO, they said.   I asked them to tell me what my middle name was.  NO they said.   I asked them to tell me what the first letter of my middle name was. NO they said.   I asked them to tell me what the second letter of my middle name is.  NO they said.  All of this, they said was information they could not share without verifying who I was.  YET, they were unwilling to tell me enough to verify who they are.

If this is legitimate, it is very poorly handled!   They are asking for information from me, without providing me any way of verification as to who I am talking with.  BEWARE!!!!!

This number is a legitimate SSA number.  If some of the people leaving negative comments would take the time to call the SSA, (800-772-1213), they would find that this is an actual SSA office.  I did.

I received a call yesterday from this number.  It was a legitimate call.  He did ask personal questions including my SSN.  But I called the national number and verified that everything he told me yesterday about my recent application was correct.  He was very nice to me, and I was so trusting of him because he referenced facts from my application that no one would know about today, and everything he told me about my benefits were verified in the conversation I had at the main SSA number -- 8007721213.  It was scary after I hung up talking to him, though, and I'm glad I checked it out.  I will remember to be more careful in the future.

Well Said! And when in doubt, always call the SS from their real phone number listed on their web site or on your books and information sent from them..

I got a call from this number. She claimed she was with Social Security. She asked me if I had recently made a claim online. And she said she needed to ask some questions. I said okay what? First thing she did was she said "What is your Social Security number?"

Nope. Sorry. Everyone knows the first rule is you never give your Social Security number to somebody who calls you and claims to be this or that person ? of all people the Social Security office should know this.  I don't care what the posts above say, I don't believe that it was Social Security.  The most secure thing that an authentic call would've done would be to say please go to your nearest Social Security office and verify the information that you submitted online.

If by some small chance this was in fact an authentic call, the Social Security administration is completely out of line.

I have checked several reverse phone number look up sites, and no one can say where this line is or who it belongs to.  If in fact it is authentic, why isn't it listed at the Social Security office number?  My caller ID did show the Social Security main number 800?772?1213, but I understand it is possible for scammers to appear as if they're calling you from a number that is in fact bogus.  The person on the phone knew what my caller ID said but said to call her at the 855 number. She said her name was Sylvia.

No regard for security at all.
