Debt Collector
Just got a call from these a-holes yesterday, September 9th. They called my cell phone from UNKOWN & BLOCKED numbers 4 times within the same half hour AND called my mother's cell phone twice. My son started a new school yesterday so finally I answered incase it was the school and this guy on the phone asked for me by first & last name. I asked what this was regarding & he said he was calling from "The clerks office" and I was a hard person to find. I asked what clerks office and he said "The county clerks office". I said that was all well and good but what county precisely and he said "New York County" and asked for me by name again. I said it was me and asked what it was regarding. He said I was being looked for to be served but he didn't know the specifics and to call this same 855 number everyone is mentioning with a case number. I do not live in NY county, I do not work in NY county and for the record I have not even lived in NY State for the last 7 years. I called my attorney about it and found this site. He said under no circumstances to call them back and they are an illegal fishing expedition. This likely happened to me, and maybe some of you, because my husband and I are in the processing of getting a mortgage for a house we are closing on this month and have paid off some debts. There are companies out there which exist solely for the purpose of tracking activity on the 3 major Credit Bureaus and when they see excessive activity on specific accounts they go looking for information to try and sell to debtors and collectors. They use these scare tactics hoping you'll want to give up information & cooperate.

same people called from different  number, but wanted me to call 855-319-9730 and gave me a case number. At first i was little scared, then read this thread and relieved. The % of people who read these posts is very less and the rest are probably falling prey to these scam artists and its worth for them to keep doing this. I think it was my bank chase gave them my personal info and phone number. I think these damn banks that are to be blamed first giving out all our private info..i do that willingly on facebook  ;)

Colonial Asset Managment. Debt collector with "big" scare tactics. Original call came into my WORK number (which I have no idea how they obtained) saying they were a courier service trying to serve me a summons and that in order to put my case on Hold i needed to call 855-319-9730. Once I called it, found out it was an old credit card from years ago. I believe this is just a scare tactic to try to get money. Once I told them I wanted written proof of the debt, the guy got pissy and hung up on me.

Received a call at work who one of my employees took a message from.  A supposed officer David James was trying to serve me paperwork. Left the 855-319-9730 to call back.  I called and they stated that this guy didn't work for them and that they were out of California.  I asked them what the Civil Order number was out of a county I don't even live in and they stated since we're in a different state we don't file with the courts until you've been served.  Does that make sense?  I told them I don't recall this debt and they can mail paperwork to my house and serve me there if there serious.  And then stated to kiss my *** .

David James called a family member from this number 855.319.9730 threatening that he was sending the police to my home and then my office if I did not call back within 2 hours.  I searched Google before calling back and found this site.  This Collection Agency buys junk debts and then threatens illegally.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

?is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
?refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
?asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
?exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

?Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.?Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
?Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
?Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
?Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.
