Debt Collector
While I was on vacation last week someone called my place of employment saying I would be served at work and that I needed to call 1-855-339-8859 with the reference number they left.  I called today and someone answered Corporate Office.  I asked the name of the company and the man hung up on me.  I waited 5 minutes and called back.  The call went to voice mail.  I didn't leave a message.  I called again and a young man answered Steinberg and Associates.  I gave him my reference number and he placed me on hold.  Another man by the name of Bill Meyers answered and verified my name.  Then he wanted to verify my ss #.  I would not do it but we did verify my address.  He did tell me who is was collecting money for and wanted me to agree that I owed this money which I didn't.  I asked for something in writing.  He wanted to email the letter I said no I want it too be mailed.  So he verified my address again.  I asked him the owners name and he said he never had meet the owner and I said I didn't ask you that I asked the owners name.  He didn't know.  During our conversation I had already told him that there were already a lot of red flags in how this is being handled but when he told me he didn't know the owners name I said you better study up on that because someone will ask you again.  I told him to have a good day.

Prank Call
Got a call on my cell from a 'resticted' number 3 times.  First time I missed it.  They left a VM to call  855-339-8859 with a case number and said they had time sensitive documents to give me for a civil suit.  I called the number and had to leave a VM for them to call me back (mind you-they were using my maiden name from 7 years ago....).  The second time was a day or 2 later and  I missed the call and no VM was left.  The third time was today and I picked it up.  He said they would be delivering papers at my house for me to sign between 9 and noon tomorrow and would someone be home for a signature.  I told him I'd rather pick up the papers.  He said he'd get me an address and let me know where I'd be able to do that........I wish he would call back! I've got a million other questions to stump him now!!  I see others have gotten the same or like calls but I am still paranoid I missed a debt and now I will be in legal trouble!! I hate this!

Okay, dc. I will concede that point. 2001 was how many years ago? Still time-barred but thank you for the information. In my state it's seven years. I want these people exposed for what they are. I'll keep after them, day in and day out. Gives me somebody to take out my daily frustrations on,right?

Seven years doesn't apply to the SOL of all states.   Some have Ten years.

Whenever there's a civil suit, they serve you with papers first. In most cases, they use a constable. The papers tell you when and where to appear. Also, any debt from 2001 is a time-barred debt. It is after the threshold of seven years. It would cost more for Providian to chase (no pun intended) that debt than to write it off. In short, give these cockroaches no information whatsoever. They will use it to their advantage every time. I've filed a complaint with the FTC on their website and will speak to someone at my state's AG office tomorrow. I'm also going to our local Fox affiliate with our story to enlighten others as to the unscrupulous tactics of " Calvin Clark". The more light they are exposed to, the faster they'll crawl under a rock. I've decided to go on the offensive. Give the FTC and your AG a call. Go to your local TV station. They love exposing these kinds of scumbags. In the end, you may prevent someone from being victimized.

I never answer call that are "restricted" but my father is in the hospital so I picked up the call.  I was asked if this is Chantel and I said yes.  Then he proceeds to tell me I am a defendant in a civil law suit.  I said I had no idea what he was talking about and what was this civil case regarding.  He proceeded to spit out my home address and asked if it was correct.  I answered that it was then he gave me this number 855-339-8859 and a "file" number and told me to call and give the person my file number.  I called and gave the guy that answered this "file" number and he said I was being sued by Chase Bank for an outstanding credit card I had with Providian from 2001 and explained that Chase had bought out Providian and they had filed a civil law suit to collect the debt.  He had the last 4 digits of my S.S. number and said he was going to serve papers at my place of employment, which he has verified.  I said what address do you have as my place of employment?  He wouldn't give me that info.  I said I wasn't going to accept any subpoenas.  He said the court date was the following day from 3-5 and if I didn't show up I would have a warrant issued for my arrest and he said good luck with that and hung up.  I've never heard of a court appearance that had an appointment time frame like that and no one showed up at my job.  I also asked our HR person if any one had called in to verify my employment and she said no, never.  I'm glad I googled this number and found this site.  I am going to file a complaint with my local police department.  What a bunch of do***ebags!!!!

You might consider getting a good call blocker unit.   Go on line and check them out.   Different ones with different capabilities and different prices to choose from.   Gives excellent peace of mind and your phone goes quiet...

I got a call from these bottom feeders. They called my old man and left a message hinting about legal action and a "docket number". This is a scam. Google " Calvin Clark debt collector " and read other people's accounts. I can't believe people fall for this. Apparently they have just enough personal information to get their noses in the door. My dad won't answer any calls from any numbers he doesn't recognize. I'm familiar enough with Fair Debt Collection laws that I know everything they're doing is illegal. When my attorney friend called back, he identified himself as an attorney and asked " Is this a law office or debt collection agency, or what?" the man who answered asked for our account number or the name of his client. My attorney wouldn't give him any info other than his name. They asked him to hold on a second and then hung up. Subsequent calls simply got a recording. Don't give these dirtbags the time of day. I'd like to harass them from a payphone if I can find one. What the hell, right? Cheap entertainment. Then again, watch out! These guys would probably sue us for the same type of harassment they perpetrate on a daily basis.
