Any organization who even implies you have committed "fraud" by not paying a debt (whether it is real or imagined) is NOT legit:

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.

Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.

Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.

Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.

Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.>

I got a call from these people claiming the same thing. I was being charged with fraud and if I didn't pay I'd go to court. I've fallen victim to scam once so I don't want it to happen again. They seem somewhat legit but I doubt they are real.

I got the same call...today almost 1pm my time....from an anonymous  number... they left a message....basically saying that my husband is in some sort of trouble and they've been trying to get a hold of him... it was a scary message and they left the said number and even had a reference number... I'm pretty sure my husband hasn't done anything illegal...so I'm pretty sure it's a scam...

Received a call telling me that I was going to be sued for fraud because of some debt from 2 or 3 years ago.  Requested verification of debt and was told that they didn't have to give me any verification because they were a litigation office.  The lady said I was on a recorded line and I said oh by the way you are being recorded to.  She got extremely upset and said that she was ending this call and was turning my case over to the attorney.  I said go ahead.  Tried to research the number to no avail.  The company was called Universal.  Anyone have any info on them....

They called me asking about my brother. I said I don't wan't to talk to you and hung up the phone. The dude called me and left a voicemail saying he was charging my brother with 3 counts of felony fraud. And he was contacting the local authorities about summoning me to court aswell. I haven't done anyhting illegal so he can eat s***. He threatened me with jail time basicly,  which is illegal so I know its a scam.

I just got this call at my place of employment.  A young lady stating that "they" are getting ready to file a claim against me in XXX County (which is where I live), to call this number 1-855-354-1788 and file a Release of Order form so they can stop the proceedings....

I have no idea what it is, and when I asked who it was that I would be calling, she told me it was the Plaintiff who is suing me.

I tried to google it and could not find who this number belongs to.

Called my cell phone and left a voicemail saying I was charged with a crime and I needed to contact the prosecutor's office within the hour at the above # and give them my home and business address so I can be served. Clearly it's a scary message to receive, but I'm 100% sure I haven't broken any laws, so it must be a scam right?
