Extortion Scam Related to Delinquent Payday Loans

Washington, D.C.
December 07, 2010  FBI National Press Office
(202) 324-3691

The Internet Crime Complaint Center has received many complaints from victims of payday loan telephone collection scams. Callers claim the victim is delinquent in a payday loan and must repay the loan to avoid legal consequences. The callers purport to be representatives of the FBI, Federal Legislative Department, various law firms, or other legitimate-sounding agencies. They claim to be collecting debts for companies such as United Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Net, and other Internet check-cashing services.

According to complaints received from the public, the callers have accurate data about victims, including Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, employer information, bank account numbers, and the names and telephone numbers of relatives and friends. How the fraudsters obtained the personal information varies, but in some cases victims have reported they completed online applications for other loans or credit cards before the calls started.

The fraudsters relentlessly call the victim?s home, cell phone, and place of employment. They refuse to provide any details about the alleged payday loans and become abusive when questioned. The callers have threatened victims with legal actions, arrests, and, in some cases, physical violence if they do not pay. In many cases, the callers harass victims? relatives, friends, and employers.

Received a voice message on my phone stating that they were going to serve me with legal documents and told me to call the number you all have listed, and left a case # for reference. I am not sure why these people cannot be stopped. Isn't this illegal harassment? If I continuously called someone, one call after another, they would be able to file charges against me, why can they do it and there's nothing that can be done. We just need to "Deal with It". That really sucks. I am not calling anyone, if you want to serve me, you should know where I live and work and come with Sheriff or I am going to have you arrested.

I received a call from an outside caller at work and the woman stated that I would be served papers and I explained I know this is a scam and I was not giving her any money.  She was able to give me my address and e-mail address.

Got a call from a private number on my cell today. Left a msg claiming to be with some law firm (but he intentionally stuttered when he said the name) and gave me a case #, and a # to call back, 855-374-9055.  They said theyd be at my home tomorrow between 12-5 to serve me. Obvious bs because a deputy would serve you. Be careful...sometimes these people will see your credit report first and pretend to be collecting something you actually owe. But if you pay youre not actually settling thayt debt! Make sure you call the original creditor and find out who they sold the debt to.

If they were going to serve you something would have to be filed through your county.  Just call your local courthouse and they will tell you this is a lie.  Don't believe these peoples rebuttal once you tell them you have checked and found nothing is filed.  If you keep posting on this thread they will change their number. So don't be surprised if you get another call from them giving you another number.  If you owe a debt call the original client and find out where they sold it to.  Probably going to have to go through a couple collection agencies but eventually you will find out the current holder of your debt.

So - did they come to your residence or place of employment the next day between 12-5?  I am curious because they started calling me too.  I don't have any outstanding debt.  So, no reason to get served that I am aware of.

I find it hard to believe that this is legit even though the lady who left the message is actually legible.  I find that anytime that I have applied for a loan of any kind, I start getting these calls.  I have decided that unless I know the company, I am never applying online for any type of loan ever again.  It is just too risky and you get too much crap for it.  I have had calls non-stop since Friday including 8:15 on Sunday morning and that is just unacceptable.  I am just tired of it and I am not going to put myself into these situations again.

Received a call from a blocked number this morning but did not answer. I played the voicemail that was left and called the number that was given.  After speaking to a very rude person, I was told to provide my current address so they can send documents for me to sign. Something about a collection claim for a gym in Oregon. I have never lived in Oregon. In t he middle of the call I searched the number I called and found this website. I proceeded to tell the person on the phone to f*** off and that I had found their number on a scammer call list.
