Following up on my previous post -

I don't know how anyone else has been able to find out so easily that the check is legitimate, or get anyone to investigate it further (without resorting to calling the number printed on the letter from Citi).  I can't even get a single person at Citi to run the check number and tell me if it is legitimate.  I have talked to general Customer Service, the Identity Theft department and the Fraud department, and no one will run the check number or look into it any further.  No one is saying "We've had other calls about this Trilegiant issue."  They are all claiming they don't know anything and that they don't have the ability to see if the check is valid.

I called Citibank who had no knowledge of this letter. it is NOT one of their routing numbers. Then when I tracked down Trilegiant online i called them. They explained that this 'legit' refund it was actually for a Capital One Account. Then they gave the address for Trilegian/Affinion Group of 300 West Schrok Road Westerville, Ohio 43086 with a phone number of 1-855-882-9530. This is all bogus.

I have tried several times to call 1-855-382-5097 and the call won't go through. Each time, after about 2 minutes of "calling number", my phone drops the call.

I just tried to cash my check at Citibank in Palm Springs and the manager would not cash it. He said it wasn't a Citibank check, was very rude, and said that I could only deposit the check "if" I had an account with them, which I don't.

I went with a family member who received one of these as well and went to the bank with them.. They were able to cash it without a hitch. That is the Absolute TRUTH!!! Before going we read the letter with the attached check In Depth and found no apparent scam, malicious intent, hidden agenda, stipulations, agreements, and so on and on........ What I would suggest is scanning the letter and the attached check making certain that all the Bar Codes and Content of the letter are clearly visible. Then make multiple copies and store them in different locations in order to cover your back side. Additionally, if they were up to some kind of scam, the copies could easily be used as an instrument to hang themselves with.  Further, I told my relative; "the worst thing that the bank that you attempt to cash it at could say to you is just NO; we can't cash this". "Nothing Ventured, Nothing Gained".  Be Grateful and Thank GOD for such a wonderful unexpected Blessing. How wonderful it would be if we received more surprises like this; more often!!! Of Course if your'e still concerned and have any inquiries just give them a call using a blocked phone number. I Pray that this Blessing came to Those at just the Perfect time and at a moment in their life when they Really Needed a Miracle or a Major Stroke of Good Fortune; when they were feeling Hopeless, dim, in despair and could not even imagine a way for something like this  to manifest  itself by showing up at their door and Meeting a Need which so timely arrived when a major Situation Cried to be Met and Resolved!!! Bless You All!!!

I too just received a check like this over the weekend.  I did considerable online research and like others found mixed responses as to the validity of the check.  So I took the time to go into my local Citi branch today and they were able to verify that the check was in fact valid.  I also called the number on the letter and found that these refunds are part of a class action lawsuit settlement that dates back to 2009.  This was an action bought against a company called Trelegiant(sp).  Apparently they were billing Citi card holders for credit monitoring services not requested and were refusing to cancel the service when people called in to request such.  For more information on the suit here is a link I found.

I hope that this is helpful.

I too recieved a check today for 346.43. for Trilegiant credit monitoring charged on the account. We have not had a citi card for at least 10 years, maybe more.
I too was concerned and ended up here looking for answers. I first called citibank and the gal had NO idea what I was talking about, so I then spoke to her supervisor, he asked for routing number and he said it did not appear to be a citi check ( same routing number as others here stated). So then I called the fraud dept, and READ the letter to the gal. She assured me that YES it is a VALID check. When I told her that I just wanted to be sure before trying to deposit or cash it , she agreed that you can never be too sure and not to feel foolish for asking... I told her that there were TONS of other people questioning this same check refund online. So SIMPLY just call the FRAUD DPT to rest your mind if you're wondering. Also, I did the "copy" the check as someone else here did, and mine too showed the "void" on the copy.

I received the letter yesterday (May 3) and there was a check for $11.07 attached.  But...the phone number that was given to call is totally different from the 855-382-5097 number you all are discussing here.  The number in my letter is:  855-841-4717.

In fact the only reason I stumbled upon this particular page of 800notes is because I Googled something along the lines of "citibank letter with check" (or some variation of that).

To my knowledge, I have never had any kind of account with Citibank but if I had a card that was somehow connected to Citibank it would have been long, long, long ago.

Also, I have no recollection of a "previously cancelled membership in a credit monitoring program, provided by Trilegiant for which program fees were billed to your account," as the letter states.  It says that I was billed fees although I may not have received all of the credit monitoring offered with the program.  I don't recall ever being billed for anything like that.

I don't know.  Despite the fact that everyone is saying this is legit, it doesn't feel right to me.  There's something weird about it.

I also received the refund for "not receiving the credit monitoring and alert benefits".  When I reverse look up the phone number on the letter it comes up as an invalid number 855-382-5097 (I was afraid it could be one of those scams that charges you as soon as you call it).  Since there are mixed reviews on here I will do some more research before I attempt to cash it.  My check was for $152.03.  I find it strange that we are all getting different amounts back.

I got the check about two weeks ago, also thought it was a scam and put it aside. However, after some research and a call, I decided to make a copy before I go to the bank.  Upon making a copy, the copied page showed "VOID"s across the copied check (it's the "watermark" technology that some companies are using for security, including the one I work for), that pretty much confirmed that it's a real check.  So I went to my bank (Chase) and cashed it.  Already spent most of it with lovely wife for lunch today!

Also received the same letter with a check attached.  I too called Citibank and was told that the check was legit.  I asked why there wasn't a better explanation for the returned money.  I was told that the transaction went back to 2000.  I no longer have that card-haven't had for quite some time.  I was told that I could take it to a city bank to cash it. Really!?!  That works and when I asked where the nearest branch to me was at--(I live in Minneapolis)--I was told that there are no branches in Minnesota, Closet one I would have to go to would be located in WI or how close are you to Texas.  WHAT! We just got 18 inches of snow and this gal thinks I live close to TX!!!

I contacted Citibank through their website asking if the check was legit. They responded with:

The check you have received is in fact a valid check. During one of our yearly audits we noticed a error and have corrected it. One of the corrections was issuing reimbursement for a product that was not 100% received. You may cash that check with no hesitation. This is a valid check.

I just confirmed that the checks are real (at least mine is).  I took my time checking and ultimately feel comfortable cashing it. I recommend taking the check and the letter to a Citibank branch if you are not sure yet.

I just received the check 4/11/2014 amount $33.13, the address does not check out Citibank  PO Box 6500 not  6158.  I cannot find the phone number either. I like the idea sending it to the fraudulent department at citibank.  I have not cashed nor call yet.

I called citibank and talked to the frued dept and also the dept that was handling this case.  They both assurred me that this was real.  and that this might go back to cards used as far back as 2000.  So  cashed the check today instead of depositing it.

Hi Judy - I contacted Citi (fraud dept) with a number that I located myself - after much "investigation" I feel confident that this is legit - you can read my post - look up a number for Citi yourself and ask for the fraud dept - I'd never call a number on a letter for something like this...enjoy your $$$ - was a welcome surprise for me!

I received a letter and check from Citi yesterday and nearly threw it away unopened as I haven't had a Citi account for years. When I opened it I was of course suspicious (retired police officer!) - instead of calling the number listed I researched it and found this site; I then called Citi - fraud dept - using a legit number for the company that I located myself, and the representative assured me that the letters and checks are legit - she said that the company that they had partnered with to provide credit monitoring had not provided all of the services that they were contracted to perform, therefore, after all this time, all Citi clients who had this service were receiving refunds. She said that the company "Trilegiant" as well as Citi had not informed representatives that they were going to be sending these checks out, so when people started calling in about receiving checks they were confused, which made the whole thing sound more suspicious. Look up the number for Citi yourself or contact a local branch and ask to be transferred to their fraud department and confirm this for yourself - I would never call a number listed in the letter or cash the check without looking into it - you never know when it could be some kind of scam.

I called this number twice and spoke with two different people just to double check.  The first one was a lady and the second a man. Both stated that the check is indeed good and is part of a settlement from previous programs offered.  They did state that the checks were widely varying in amounts from a few cents to hundreds of dollars, depending on the time frame it which you were enrolled. This is a number listed on citi's site so I would hope this is legit.  Fingers crossed!
