Read here Marry..........M-a-r-r-y?

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.

Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.

Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.

Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt

What do you mean legal?  A collector cannot call your place of employment but one time.  When told not to continue calling they must cease.   Also,  until written documentation is provided to Validate the debt is owed,  no one owes anyone  anything. I could call you and demand  499.00 based upon my badgering and threats.  Would you pay it to me,  a total stranger,  unseen and over the phone without proof of the debt and written validation to validate that the debt is owed and that I have the legal right to claim and collect in your state?  The laws of the FDCPA  (Fair Debt collections ace)  states that written validation and proof of the debt must be sent withing 5 days of contact.   To continue to call someone every 30 minutes is harassment and to threaten with a warrant for arrest over an alleged civil case is illegal.  You say that you owed the debt.  Nobody else on this thread said that they owed an alleged debt.  You have one poster stating that they are threatening him with coming to his work place and serving him.  Yet they never show up.  That is illegal.  This scammer has broken just about every law of the FDCPA and you say you it is legal!    BullFrog!!!!

I think breach of privacy is not the issue.  Those folks are using the typical scam that we hear so much about anymore.  They harass you by phone,  call your employer to try to embarass you,  and virtually attempt to badger you into paying them to cease.   It's called extortion.   If you have not already done so,  speak with your supervisor or manager and make sure that they are aware of this attempted scam going on.  It puts them on your side and also it is encouraging to know that  Termination without Cause is against the law. The only thing they can do to you is continue to badger you and P you off.  Sooner or later,  they will move on to the next victim.

I also recieved a call from this # --- I knew that I had taken out the loan, so I did some investigating.

This is legal, but some of the people I talked to were very rude...

They usually dont take people to court or move foward unless your debt is over $500 depending on what state you are in...

They also rarely use their real name --

Well the continued to call back repeatedly for about 30 minutes and I threatened to call the police department and he stated that I should do that and there would be a warrant waiting for me.  So I called the police department and they came and called the guy back and told him to quit calling me and that I would contact him when it was more appropriate.  Basicly if they can't send me proof of anything they are not getting anything from me what so ever.

Thank for for the information - I thought it was probably a scam.  I will start a formal complaint as well.

Don't call them back. They have been harassing me for weeks. They called my employer and told them I had criminal charges against me and I was going to be arrested. I contacted my local AG's office and they told me it was a scam and I have filed a formal complaint with the Federal Trade Commission.

Just received a call on my cell phone and on my work phone with a call back number of 855-413-8658 - they called 4 times and left a message that I had to call them today or they were going to "process my paperwork further in my county." The caller ID said Unknown and Out of area so I don't have any other information except for a name - Justin Mcadoo.  I am pretty sure that this is a scam because there was no business name left nor can I find a legit business with this call back number.  Also when they left a message at my office - they left a "case number" - isn't that a breach of privacy?
