I just got the same call....after reading the threads I called back. They threatened that if I cant make it from tn to ny for court they will set a default, they were an attorney, blah blah.
So I called back to ask for them to send a copy of the ill in question to me since they had it in front of them.
They said that since I cant make it to ny, that they didnt have to send a bill.
WRONG....anyone knows that if you owe a debt, you have the legal stand point to be able to have access to your past due bill.
When I was hung up on, I called back & was told if I called again, they would call my sheriffs office & have me arrested for harassment ...LMFAO

I keep getting calls from blocked numbers.  Investigator Romero who says I'm going to get served and possibly arrested for some unknown debt. She even commented that by my voice mail she can tell I have a young child and it would be a shame to be taken from him.   I've never been served. I don't get a company name. Just a 1 800 number. How do I stop this?

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

?is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
?refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
?asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
?exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

?Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.?Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
?Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
?Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
?Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.

I received a call on Saturday 2/1/14 from 855-420-8311 telling me that she would be serving a subpoena at my home Monday 2/3/14 and that if that was the wrong address or if I would not be available I was to call the number above immediately.  She said if it was a missed serve she would get a bench warrant for my arrest.  This is a debt I know about and have been contesting for almost a year now but I never received any paperwork or anything from them.  I was scared to death and called the number on Saturday and it was just an answering machine, I left a message.  I called again this morning and the same answering machine and I left my name & case# again.  No response.

We so should file a petition.  A call from this number, almost ruined my weekend.  I am so glad I googled this number and did not give them any information.  The fact that the person answered this number, by just saying hello and it was the same voice from the restricted number and was rude, is wrong in itself.  I called the number back and left a message stating to come serve me!

First call restricted stating they were serving me a subpeona on Monday.  They provided me with the same 855 number to reschedule.  Funny, it was the same person that answered the phone, just saying hello, no business name, as the person that called me from the restricted line.  Only asked my name, no docket number, and just went on making threats on how I would be liable for court costs and attorney fees.  She was pissed that I would not give her my debit card or checking account number.  After finding this site, I called back the number.  It was a lame answering machine with a phony company name.  I left a message with only my docket number and told them to come out Monday and serve me.  I am going to report this number.  I got really stressed at first when I got the call.  I am now relieved after reading everyone elses issues that they had with them.

Prank Call
These scammers... This is a toll free number.  Why don't we all get together and swamp call them for a few hours demanding information about these so-called debts.  I received one of these calls on my voice mail looking for the person who used to have my phone number.  I won't call these bad guys back right now.  However, if we get together and slam their phone lines then other victims would get a busy signal, and their boiler room drones won't be able to call out.

OR!  A smart person would design a simple device that hits the net for a list of scam callers and blocks their numbers.  All people calling from a blocked number would be forced to speak a name into the phone and then the system would give a chance to reject.  Finally it is time to ban hiding the caller number from Caller ID.

So I have received calls from this number multiple times. Very rude and the debt is not valid that they are referencing. I have called every possible agency and feel like I'm getting the run around. These companies are breaking the law every 2 minutes of the day.  It's time we hold our lawmakers accountable. The FTC is aware of these companies but no actions are being taking to curb their poor behavior.
See the article below:
http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0258-fake-debt-collectors

Maybe we should start a petition or something so that this issue is addressed and maybe make an example of one of these companies..but it has to stop or we need to begin filing lawsuits against these companies for knowing and willing violating the FDCA..  How many people are victims of this daily..we need to take a stand..

Got a call to from 716-568-7925.  Left message stating they were the IRS!  Gave me this 855-420-8311 number to call with a supposed case number.   Just called the 855 and someone picked up on the first ring took the case number and asked if I was so and so.  No, I said. Then she said how do I get in touch with so and so?  Told her I have no idea since I don's know that person.  "Of course you don't,"  she said snidely.  Then told me she would take my number off the list and it would take up to 24 to 48 hours.

Guys do NOT fall for this...just verified with my atty general office in VA that this number...8554208311  is related to a scam..they have multiple numbers listed with it from various area codes around the country.funny the number that came in on my phone was not an 855 number but area code 716 which is in california...which means it would be 7am there...seems scamming never sleeps... anyway, I've reported them to the FTC, FBI, and my atty general. Last night, I received another call from this same group(the call back number left is the same) from another area code(this time it was 213)saying I was going to be arrested, etc.. this morning I called the courthouse here and back in my home state and whattya know...no court case on the docket, no warrants for arrest, nada... both messages are recorded. I have no outstanding debts other than my car loan and the normal living expenses... so whatever... not paying a dime.

I have been following this number and seem to be a identity theft protection services that use arguments like loans to scare people and if you fall in their pawns, they show you that any person can get your information - also debts - for that reason is better buy the protection they offer.
Founded an identity theft protection service that depends from a media net work group that is a technological service, but no one has a contact name number or email, if you want the service you have to contact them through your own email.
The last time they call me, I answer "Wait ma'm, I don't need your identity protection service, but I think you need it, because the authorities are investigating this number, through media fraud department. u better call right now to stop the investigation if not they will be in your location tomorrow between 5 and 6 pm thank you any way" that stops those boring phone calls

Section 809 of the FDCPA http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/credit/cre27.pdf requires 3rd-party debt collectors to give debtors written notice of debt (the key word is *shall*) :
"§ 809. Validation of debts
(a) Within five days after the initial communication with a consumer in connection with the collection of any debt, a debt collector shall, unless the following information is contained in the initial communication or the consumer has paid the debt, send the consumer a written notice containing?
(1) the amount of the debt;
(2) the name of the creditor to whom the debt is owed;
(3) a statement that unless the consumer, within thirty days after receipt of the notice, disputes the validity of the debt, or any portion thereof, the debt will be assumed to be valid by the debt collector;
(4) a statement that if the consumer notifies the debt collector in writing within the thirty-day period that the debt, or any portion thereof, is disputed, the debt collector will obtain verification of the debt or a copy of a judgment against the consumer and a copy of such verification or judgment will be mailed to the consumer by the debt collector; and

A Collection Agent May Not?

Here are the top 11 actions prohibited by the The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act:

Misrepresent Him or Herself

  A debt collector may not misrepresent himself as an attorney or law enforcement officer.

Use the Telephone to Annoy or Harass

  A collection agent may not cause a telephone to ring or engage any person in telephone conversation repeatedly or continuously with an intent to annoy, abuse, or harass anyone at the called number.

Threaten Arrest or Lawsuit

  A collection agent may not threaten a consumer with arrest. It may not threaten legal action that is either not permitted or not actually contemplated. In other words, a the threat of a lawsuit may be an empty one.

Use Abusive or Threatening Language

  A debt collector may no use abusive or profane language in the course of communication related to the debt.

Publish a Bad Debt List

  Publishing the consumer?s name or address on a "bad debt" list is prohibited.

Contact By Embarrassing Media

  A debt collector may not communicate with a consumer by post card. It may not use any language or symbol, other than the debt collector?s address, on any envelope when communicating with a consumer by use of the mails or by telegram. A debt collector may use its business name if such name does not indicate it is in the debt collection business.

Contact a Consumer at Work

Seek Unjustifiable Amounts

Communicate With a Consumer After Receiving a Validation Request

  If a consumer sends a written §1692g response within 30 days, the collection agent may not communicate with the consumer until it mails the consumer the requested verification of original creditor's name and address.

Communicate With Third Parties

  A debt collector may not reveal or discuss the nature of a consumer?s debts with third parties other than the consumer?s spouse or attorney. A collection agent may contact neighbors or co-workers only to obtain location information. It may contact a third party again if it has reason to believe the information the party provided previously is false.

Bills.com FDCPA FAQ

Below are questions Bills.com readers ask frequently:

Can a Collection Agent Call My Cell Phone?

  Yes. However, if you tell the debt collector it may not use that number because it is a cell phone, it may not contact you again at that number.

I Keep Receiving Dozens of Calls From Collection Agents. Is That Legal?

  No. Unscrupulous collection agents will use "block parties" or "office parties" where they contact a consumer, multiple neighbors, or co-workers telling them they need to reach the consumer on an urgent matter. This is not permitted under the FDCPA.

A Collector Says I Will Be Arrested if I Do Not Pay

  This was a true statement before the US Civil War, but has not been true since. People may be arrested if an aggressive judge files a bench warrant for a person who does not appear at a hearing relating to a lawsuit regarding a debt. However, in that case, the offense is the failure to respond to a court order, and not the existence of the debt. As stated above, it is illegal under the FDCPA to threaten a consumer with arrest if the consumer does not pay the debt.
