There is Texas Laws and Laws every where else too --- False information from them like this can get them in very big trouble ... I hope they get Caught and they need to go out and earn their money the hard way not from easily stealing money on the phone..... The company who has been calling you is probably a scammer. There is no evidence that they actually exist. They are probably criminals who have found your information online. Unless you receive written notification there is no reason to treat them as a real company. They may threaten you to scare you into paying them, but there is nothing they can actually do. Do not give them anything they ask for. File a complaint with your state attorney general's office or contact the new government agency which has been set up to handle consumer complaints:
http://www.consumerfinance.gov/get-help-now/c ... and-complaints/
http://www.consumerfinance.gov/
You may also file a complaint with the FBI here:
http://www.ic3.gov/complaint/default.aspx.
Payday loan sites get hacked on a seemingly regular basis and  scammers use info hacked from these sites to illegally collect money from unwary consumers. They will often know  personal info such as your last four digits of your SSN, DOB, address etc., all taken from the stolen records.  They use that info to get even more info on you from personal info sellers like Choicepoint. Unless you know for sure you owe the money, be very careful about giving them any personal info, especially bank account information (they will clean you out,).  Record the calls if legal in your jurisdiction, and demand a mailing  address so you can send them a "cease and desist" letter (see FDCPA Sect 809.)   Since these calls almost always come from overseas, there isn't much the authorities can do to stop them.  So protect yourself. The scammers use many scare tactics to force you to pay:
?    Threaten jail time, to "serve you at work or home" or " arrest you at work or home" if you don't pay by a specific hour
?    demand pre-paid Walmart card or Western Union tranfers to pay the supposed debt
?    Tell you "there is a case pending  in the courts".  Check your local courthouse and see if any company has filed a lawsuit against you.
?    Say they are federal agents, government agents, law enforcement, ie; "Officer Smith", ""Special Investigator Jones"
?    Say they are a lawyer or law firm. Ask for their exact company name, address and the names of their lawyers so you can look them up in their state bar association (this can be done online).
?    State a fake company name: again, get the exact address and look them up in their state's Division of Corporations:. If they are not listed there they are not a real company, and therefore, a SCAM!
?    Tell them by law they are required to send you a collection letter within 5 days of the first time they call you. Be suspicious if they refuse to give you their address or won't send the letter through the US Mail. Many scammers email or fax collection letters to skirt the Mail Fraud felony laws.
All Division of Corporations for every state can be found at the following link:
http://www.coordinatedlegal.com/SecretaryOfState.html
Unfortunately there is nothing we can do against scammers since they are  not legitimate and not much you can do either other than hang up on them. Keep telling them you know they are not real, they will not get anything from you, and are wasting their time.  Also, tell them you have reported them to the FBI.  Eventually they will leave you alone when they realize they will not be able to trick you into paying them.  Please see this ALERT  from the FBI:
http://www.ic3.gov/media/2010/101201.aspx
Here is a link to a recent Fox news report on this very scam:

We hope this information has proven helpful. And please tell your family and friends to be on alert for this scam!

"Mr. Curran called me and threatened me. He told me that I would be arrested today if I didn't pay $2300. I called the Attorney General's office and they told me not to give him a dime, and to ignore his calls. They cannot arrest you.

Inquiring if any one has spoken with a gentleman identified as Mr. Curran, with a 305 number. Received a very similar call reporting a debt for outstanding pay day loan. They knew of my previous employer, computer used to complete loan application, previous address, education level, criminal history and other personal iformation.  Because I know there is a possibility that this information is valid, a payment was provided. As reported the total amount owed is 1700, which is a similar amount with other compliants. Checked internet for Atlas Mediation and was floored to find so many inconsistencies in information regarding company, location, phone numbers, reverse look-up for number given. My bank is now handling this issue.  Has anyone contacted  consumer affrairs or any other bureau in 2012 to report these practices.  We all should ensure that if a agency is conducting an investigiation, they have everyone's complaint.

This person just called my job and this is not my SS #. They did this years ago and I contacted the state attorney General and this is illegal for them to do. They are not allowed to call your job, they are not allowed to threaten you, they are not allowed to even call your home after 9pm. Always know your rights before you deal with any bill collectors. If you owe money to someone, then contact that company directly and work out the payment arraignments. Bill Collectors are just rude people and they could care less if you can afford a reasonable payment arraignments.

Raymond Coven, says he is a compliance officer, first call young lady says her name is angelica or angela and the name of the company is atlas mediations.  Mr. Coven says the name of the company is Legal Mediation or rather that is the name of the department he works in.  Then I called them and asked for the name of company and the another young lady says the name of the company is Elite Mediation.  So which one is it?  Secondly, they say the police will be arresting me for a payday loan from 2007 that was unpaid.  I called the loan company and they stated that they sold the account to another collection agency and provided me the number  to call them, the man I need to speak with is on vacation, so I will have to call him monday. At first, I gave them my credit card # and my accounts were blocked.  Thank God, cause I as I look into this matter more, they will not provide me with any validation about the debt as far as interests on it.  I asked for an email, they will not do that.  I am not sure what he trying to do other than get money, but not unless you can prove to me who you are and why I should pay you the amount of the debt plus 225 more.

I too recieved a call from this number for a payday loan I got in 2009 with my husband.  They had all my information because I gave it when I got the loan and the rest of the information they got while they were trying to find me since all my information changed last year when I got divorced.  I was not happy with the high interest rates but I did take the loan out so I paid it.  They were very nice as opposed to some indian man tht called me before and they sent me a letter via emil showing who i owed and how much it was prior to me paying then sent me a paid in full letter after I paid.  Come on people we are all grown and you know if you take something you have to give it back so let's stop blaming these people and acting like we don't know how they got our information....

Said they were calling from Legal Mediation and that they wanted a statement from me regarding some bogus payday loan I took out in 2006.  They too had all my personal information including my full SSN, Bank Account number, place of employment and so on.  Said I had to have my lawyer contact them within one hour or they would have the case filed and I would be arrested on three felony counts.  The first woman was reading from a script and when she demanded a statement and I would give anything but "I dont know what you are talking about" she put another lady on the phone that was very rude and pushy and when i told her my lawyer would contact her within an hour she sounded very disappointed and said thank you we look forward to hearing from them.  I called my lawyer, they said if the allegation are true then the case would be turned over to the police, a detective would contact me for questioning and so on.  Since they hold all of our personal information I suggest to everyone that you contact your local Attorney Generals office and file a complaint.  There is no telling what they are doing with our personal data........

Hmmm, Atlas Mediation? Call this number, it is the real Atlas Mediation 435-602-0127. I just looked at their website and there is no mention of debt collection being done by this company. I would *67, then dial the number I gave you, and call and ask for Raymond Covin. If there is a Raymond Covin there, which I doubt, and they put you through, tell him you can't go to jail for an unpaid payday loan. Also, look at the FDCPA at the following site creditlaw.com, they have a list of the main points of this Act. This way you know you're rights and can challenge this jack&&s with them. However, I have a feeling that this person is just using their name to scam you. Maybe you should let the real Atlas Mediation know that they're name is being used in conjunction with a scam. Apparently, this happens a lot nowadays.

I got a call from this number today. He said I owed $300 for a payday loan from 2007. I paid the loans that I had taken that year. I talked with Raymond Covin. He was very pushy. He told me that I would go to jail. I told him that I needed to talk with my husband. I checked my credit report and nothing shows up. This is a big scam!!!!
