We got the call at 12:34am also. I like the idea of the system, but I can't get calls that late. The whole family was awake for hours :-(
Annonymus 2013-10-28 16:13:11 Unknown

What a waste of tax dollars and hints of totalitarianism. Really, uninvited, at midnight you wake me to go find a poor Alzheimer's senior wandering more than 3 miles from my home? Who in Santa Clara County Emergency Management Agency runs this show? They are out of their minds intruding into the privacy of our homes for no good reason. An earthquake, a fire I would understand. Someone has to tone these people down.

I got a call at MIDNIGHT that really scared me. They should stop calling after 10:00 PM

I got a call from this number today (Sunday)! Caller-id showed "Toll Free Caller". There was nobody at the other end! I sure get annoyed with these types of calls.

And you are an idiot to address someone as an idiot because their opnion differs from yours. They are entitled to Rant just as much as you are and to be called idiots is nothing but childish name calling. Grow up.
Nurse_T 2013-07-13 05:42:06 Unknown
First of all Mo you are an idiot, and anyone else who thinks this is a waste of our tax dollars. These are public service announcements that serve as warnings for things like heat waves and the risk of heat stroke, missing children and elderly. Just because you think you know better than to expose yourself or your child to the heat doesn't mean that everyone understands the risks, and how easily you can be overcome by the heat. Also, this type of call may remind people to check on their elderly family and friends.
And, if it was your child or elderly family member wouldn't you want the authorities to do everything to protect or find them? I'm sure you would!

Local gov't agency calling me to say there's a heat wave.
First of all DUH, I'm not going to pick up a call that doesn't display the name on caller ID, so thanks for nothing (I didn't check my messages until later - by then my unattended baby could have baked to death while napping on the asphalt, I guess). And second of all DUH, anyone who needs to be *told* it's hot outside will be too dumb to know how to work a phone.
Meanwhile, they didn't bother to call me about the MAJOR GAS LEAK.
What a waste of tax dollars.

Phil, I looked at the website, http://www.sccgov.org/sites/alertscc/Pages/home.aspx. There is NO WAY to manage these messages from what I can see.
I called the San Jose number listed, and the city says they are responsible and wonders why they are listed. I called the county number and voicemail comes on immediately. I left a message asking how to manage these. No reply yet. I also sent an email and awaiting a reply.
I called the number and I'm able to listen to past messages. This services is currently sending everyone a message on an average ONCE EVERY TWO WEEKS. There's always a tendency to increase these messages over time. People will eventually just ignore them, so there will be no value in blasting these messages to everyone. I think most people know about the boy who cried wolf too many times.
We're taxed to death in this county and state. It goes to show the money isn't being used wisely.
Ma 2013-07-03 00:18:36 Unknown
You and me both. These are annoying messages and an example of government run amuck. It goes to show where all the excessive tax money is being spent.
Ken 2013-07-02 23:47:55 Unknown
It's a public service alert for Santa Clara County. They're calling registered numbers with information on what to do to deal with the heat wave we've been in for several days now. They're apparently having some issues with their equipment, as the message started OK ("Hi, this is Dr. Marty Finster....") but garbled up after a minute or so.

Thanks for the updates. Our phone rang 3 times, too, but the caller did not leave a message. (It is hot today.)

does ANYONE KNOW WHAT IT IS ABOUT? Thanks
Phil 2013-07-02 23:09:13 Unknown
make sure you are not registered under your county emergency alert service. Usually you need to register (usually online) and give phone number to receive these types of announcements, and there is also a way to de-register for the same service. For example, in Santa Clara County, California, you would go to http://www.sccgov.org/sites/alertscc/Pages/home.aspx

The system seems like a go Idea ! But they should update Fix it so the callerid would ID this as a Amber Alert. We don't answer usually when there is no Caller ID....

It is indeed the SJPD reverse 911 call in the San Jose area. Pls keep in mind toll free numbers CAN be used only locally and MAY be a different caller in annother geographic area.

This number keeps on calling me. I have no idea who it is and it is scaring me.
me 2013-05-22 19:46:52 Unknown
Any idea how to get these to stop? This call woke me up, and frankly I don't really want to spend my time looking for people for the police. That is part of what they are paid for.

Just received a call from this number, it was a recorder announcement from the San Jose (California) Police Department regarding a missing elderly person, that gave a description and last known whereabouts.

This is the reverse-911 system for San Jose, California (and likely other locations as well). It is a legitimate call...in this case an Amber Alert. When I returned the call, it gives a list of previous alerts that you can plan back as well as the current one.
