The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

?is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
?refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
?asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
?exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

?Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.?Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
?Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
?Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
?Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.

I received a voice mail from a blocked number from a John Scott  telling me that he has been trying to reach me to have me sign documents. He will be coming to my place of work from 12-5 tomorrow.  He also said this yesterday.  I called my cell phone carrier and had them add the feature to my plan that blocked, private, and unavailable numbers can't call me.

Just received my second voice mail at my work from Ted Banks stating that he was attempting to get me to sign papers today at my home & work.  That he will come between 12-5 pm today to my work.  And to be available to sign and have a valid id. Exactly the same thing as mentioned above.  They are using my maiden name which I have not used in over 13 years. When I tried calling the number back it was some mediation company and I ended up hanging up??? Not sure what this is all about?

Please do tell.
While telling us all how they helped you please include:
What debt you owed?
How long ago?
How they contacted you?
Where you sent payments?
What type of payment you sent?
The address and telephone number along with the name of your contact???
Thanks so much.

Received a call on my voicemail from a Ted Banks stating that he was attempting to get me to sign papers today at my home & work.  That he will come between 12-5 pm tomorrow to my work.  He also left a detailed message about all of this on my MOTHERS voicemail.  When I called the company back the woman refused to give me detailed company information such as name, address, phone number, fax number.  She hung up on me twice! They are in violation of numerous Federal Laws regarding debt collection.  I'll be waiting patiently at home tomorrow and if he shows up I'll call the police.

got a call from this number last night. Lady named Lea Simmons said it was a courtesy call before she came to find me between 12 and 5 because she has papers that need my signature. I've called the number back several times and nobody answers, just a recording requesting you leave info. I haven't left any info. Not sure what to think, she also had a case/reference number.

Unknown caller ( no phone# displayed) Left message with bogus name of someone never heard of. Left number 855-517-2438 to call back with message that said, have papers to give you, will be at your work tomorrow. Blah, blah, blah. Not too worried since name of person he was looking for, never heard of. Scam for sure.
