Extortion Scam Related to Delinquent Payday Loans
Washington, D.C.
December 07, 2010 FBI National Press Office
(202) 324-3691
The Internet Crime Complaint Center has received many complaints from victims of payday loan telephone collection scams. Callers claim the victim is delinquent in a payday loan and must repay the loan to avoid legal consequences. The callers purport to be representatives of the FBI, Federal Legislative Department, various law firms, or other legitimate-sounding agencies. They claim to be collecting debts for companies such as United Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Net, and other Internet check-cashing services.
According to complaints received from the public, the callers have accurate data about victims, including Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, employer information, bank account numbers, and the names and telephone numbers of relatives and friends. How the fraudsters obtained the personal information varies, but in some cases victims have reported they completed online applications for other loans or credit cards before the calls started.
The fraudsters relentlessly call the victim?s home, cell phone, and place of employment. They refuse to provide any details about the alleged payday loans and become abusive when questioned. The callers have threatened victims with legal actions, arrests, and, in some cases, physical violence if they do not pay. In many cases, the callers harass victims? relatives, friends, and employers.

I received a call from another number, 7143840300 at my place of work. My coworker picked up and asked to speak with me about a claim filed against me. Didn't suspect anything of it, so I spoke with the guy. His supposed name was Nick Norwell. Said he had some papers to serve me and needed to verify my work address. Asked him what this was in regards to, and he said he was a locator and I needed to call 8555199517 to obtain info. He gave me a case number. And said he'd give me an hour. I called and spoke with Allen at Nationwide. He said I owed money on a payday advance from dec 2010. I told him that was paid off and he said I can handle it directly with them or wait until the 3rd party delivers me the paper for fraud and intent to not pay. I said ok, send it. Because until i recieve a written notice validating my debt, i was not going to do anything. Went back to work and sure enough Nick calls. Tells another coworker he needed to speak with in regards to a claim being filed against me. I got on the phone and told him this is a personal phone call, he is not allowed to contact me at work. Im not allowed to receive personal calls . He then says he hates to sound like a broken record but he needs to verify my work address since its the only one he has and he needs to serve me my papers. I told him he can serve me b at home. He then says he doesn't have that info nor does he have any other number to call me. So I told him that if he's a locater, he can locate my information and I refuse to give him any info. And if he comes to my work, I will have him arrested and that I was going to report him to my local pd as sson as we hang up. He then tells me he will be there shortly. A***ole calls right back and spoke to another coworker and tells them he needs to verify my work address for a claim against me. My coworker told him that she was not allowed to verify employee information and that he needed to contact our corporate office and hung up on him.
These people have nothing better to do and after reading all these complaints, im going to take action and report them. Just sharing my story for those who are going through the same thing. Will keep you all poated if they do call back...

I just got a call from a local number,949-207-3138, the person said he was a "private locator", trying to find me - he had my fist and last name. I didn't confirm anything. He said he had "important papers" he needed to deliver. He told me there was a claim against me, gave me a claim number and told me to call 855-519-9517. He also said the company's name was Universal.
I don't have any recent debt. This is probably from a very old account that was charged off and sold multiple times. I hate these types of companies. If they can get you to acknowledge the debt they can reset the clock.

I got a same call multiple times, but this time they actually left a message. They requested it for a person with a different first name though. Did this happen for anyone else? Or did they use your correct first name?

Got the same call stating that there was a claim filed against me and they needed my address to serve me the papers. I thought if you need to serve me papers you should have my address!

I got the same call from them. I think this is a firm trying to collect a debt. A real person would know where to serve you and not call to verify your address. IGNORE>

Keeps calling saying he is with universal firm and has no info but wants to verify addresses!
