This is a legit call.  RBC just pissed me off for the last time though ... no Caller ID on this number.  More unethical behavior from this bank.  I have had enough.

Started getting calls from this number a couple of weeks ago, but didn't answer at first as didn't recognize the number. Then got tired of it so answered. A woman asked for someone else and I explained she had the wrong number. She asked how long I'd had this number, I said a few years, she thanked me and hung up. Then started getting 4-6 calls a day, at all hours, but whenever I answered was just empty line! Got fed up and called the number tonight; seems legit RBC collections dept call centre. Agent told me she would make sure I wasn't called anymore. We'll see.

Got a call from this number today... Message stated they were from RBC and to "call back at (some mumbled number)"... I called RBC Telephone banking and asked them to verify the number... He could not find it and advised I not call it.  He also confirmed there were no notes on my accounts that would explain why they were calling.

Okay, so this number called me and I picked up and they told me they were some radio station so I hung up since I've never called a radio station before so I figured it was a scam. They have called me multiple times, so I eventually called back the number and it said it was RBC. The lady on the phone was VERY quick to ask me for my personal information, and I stressed to her that I was not comfortable answering those questions and that if she could give me a little more information as why she was calling I would be more inclined to answer. Anyways, I hung up and called RBC and talked to a representative, and she indeed did say that the number was legitimate and transferred me to the collections. But, my advice is to call the RBC toll free number and have them transfer you, better be super safe than sorry. I still think it's super stretchy that they called saying they were a radio station.. something still doesn't seem right.

It is odd to see this comment and compare to other comments claiming several departments have no evidence this is an RBC number along with more comments where people started asking questions about the legitimacy of the caller and their employment with RBC.

Also, calling your "local RBC" branch and they were able to verify the legitimacy of the number, but corporate head office departments including security fraud departments could not verify the legitimacy of the number in other comments.

It comes down to:

1. RBC posting the number on their website, which they would do if it was their number.

2. Calling back the number is not a sound way to test the legitimacy of the number with whoever answers it on the other end.

3. Two major phone companies in Canada who deny it is a number they issued.

The best thing you could have done for RBC is direct them to this blog and tell them to rectify the situation on their website.  I believe several other people have already tried to do this from previous blogs and some filed complaints with the Anti-Fraud Bureau in Canada.

I received a call from them for my Daughter. They asked for her to call them back at the same number.  They said they were calling from Ontario.  I then called our "local RBC" branch and they verified it was from the RBC collections.  So my suggestion to you all; first call your local bank to verify the number but 'Tell Them' the call may be from "collections originating in Ontario". Make it easier for them to find the number.  At first the teller could not find the number on their regular list of numbers but since she was obviously experienced she looked up their collections phone numbers.  You can also make an inquiry on your account since I was told she could go to her branch to find out what the call was about.  Let's face it, collection companies are not eager for you to know they are calling so they won't have their number easy for you to look up.

This thread seems to be the most informative thread on this number with similar complaints to other threads.

This is an out of country number.  They can not be held accountable to Canadian Law unless they step foot on Canadian soil.  I did my own investigating.  The "Greg Skinner" contact is a legitimate name for RBC public relations.

These people also send fake/forged mail documents with the same number which are easy to create according to some website scam busters (cut and paste on photo shop).  This is a new tactic.  Check with your bank if you are getting harassed by a "Collections Department".

I also find it very odd the number comes up as Toll Free Service and not RBC.  There is technology available to have almost any identification appear on caller ID.

They rarely leave a message and most times an out of country accent can be detected when a message is left.

I know someone who accidentally answered this number and incurred a $72 charge on their phone bill for this number.

The "Scammer Posts" are very similar in names to other threads with similar comments.  A lot of these threads say call the number, it is RBC Collections.

I would tend to believe the posts where you are encouraged to call your bank and look at the bank website to see if it is one of the bank numbers.

These people also call me, they also called me at work, I can't believe it., Royal Bank now contracts their Customer Services overseas to a 3rd world county, which I might add can't pronounce English or speak it., So I ask you this..... They lay off people from Canada and then turn around and give jobs to other countries for a quarter of the price that they would give to their own people. Shame on you Royal Bank, I hope you go belly up., after hearing this on 20/20 . I said F**k it, they can kiss my A**, and I will go to another Bank or Credit Union. We should boycott Royal Bank, and maybe the CEO and Presidents and take a little less wages home instead. I will never go back to Royal, for the lack of Customer Services, Respect, and just Moral issues., they are traders.

It's not RBC.  Fraud number saying they are RBC and you owe them money.  If you question them and indicate you don't owe anything and won't give them any information they suddenly say "oh we don't need to speak with you anymore" and hang up.

DO NOT GIVE THEM ANY INFORMATION.

Hubby got a call this morning. The lady insisted hubby didn't make a payment. But I know he always pays his bills on time and even does his bank reconciliations each month. He is conscientious about paying bills on time (online) and he keeps all his receipts. Yet this woman was harassing him! When he hung up, she called back in a few minutes and I couldn't believe my ears! I am a customer, too, but have never received such a call.

Hubby also gets notices in the mail about missing payments --- payments which I know he never missed. Maybe RBC's staff are poorly trained...?

I can't believe some of the posts "Call the number back!" "They reply this is RBC Collections".  Maybe I should start calling people with the phrase "This is RBC Collections".  I think I would sound believable too.

I have now contacted RBC 2 times and received a response from 2 different departments, the same response.  RBC has no knowledge of these numbers.

Please report this number to RBC including those who believe this is RBC collections.  If RBC receives enough complaints, they will post/update on their website if this is a legitimate number or not.  Do not believe everything you read or are told over the phone line.

To all of the bloggers who posted "THIS IS RBC Collections".  Maybe you should inform "RBC" about this thread so they may rectify this situation on their official website instead of saying this is "RBC Collections".  This would be the only way to clear up this mess of threads.

Please keep in mind, I already have contacted RBC Canada twice with the same response of them having zero knowledge of these types of numbers.  "RBC Collections" needs to do their "DUE DILIGENCE" as well.

I was receiving phone calls from an alleged TD Bank number, although I am not a TD client, they did inform me this was one of their numbers when I contacted the bank.  I told them to please update their website to save on the confusion of these threads, they thanked me, and then they updated information on their official website.

I do not see RBC Canada doing the same for this number and until it changes, it can only be viewed as a "PHISHING" type scam.  I still can't believe people can get baited in by these calls like (or by) Linda and Debut_Gold just on this page alone.

I can verify to all of you that this IS a legitimate RBC Royal Bank phone number!! I know because I AM a client/customer with RBC, and the reason they so ignorantly called me at only 8:10 AM this morning (I didn't answer it- was still in bed) is because I was 5 days late on my VISA payment, unbeknownst to me, and when I called RBC about it after reading the numerous posts on here from people claiming it to be fraudulent, a scam, etc, the woman I spoke with who I gave the number to verified that it WAS indeed a RBC number!

I gave her my client card number and she had a look at my account, and that's when she said to me that everything was fine, but that I was 5 days late with a payment to VISA. (oops...my bad lol)

So if you too are a client with them, you had best check to make sure that you made a payment- otherwise there's probably a legitimate reason why they are calling you.

Well, read this thread, as well as the one "TheMan" linked to.. Weird part is, I don't bank with RBC, nor have I in the past.. Also I'm substantially in the black, with no personal debt, and have never missed a payment on anything. But, could be id theft, and prudence would say investigate further. So, I called them back, they start asking for personal info, I hang up. Called the number on RBCs website, and big surprise, they have no 855 #s, no record of me, my phone number, or my address.

Do not bother calling that number. If you're not sure and don't blindly follow advice of people you don't know from some website you found via google, good for you, but still don't call that number. Call Royal Bank, if it was really them, they don't care what number you call to contact them.

Steve

P.S. My guess is I just incurred a $5/min charge for the 25 seconds I was on the phone with them, payable to the "Royale Banco du Columbia" , incorporated in L.A. or some sh*t, since they don't actually say "Royal Bank of Canada" at any point in their msg.

P.P.S. Suck my hairy a$$ "TheMan", cuz when your scam is done, you'll be serving my kids fries on our way to a skiing trip!*

How do you know it is RBC collections.  You can not honestly believe that when you call a number and they say "RBC Collections", you jump and provide all your personal information.  I followed the RCMP guidelines and contacted RBC customer service and RBC security.  They have in no way suggested this is their phone number or are even affiliated with this phone number.  I have received 2 different responses from 2 different people, working for 2 different divisions.  More so, even Telus and Bell have said this is not one of their numbers.  After getting this information a filed a complaint with the Anti-Fraud Bureau and RBC to start an investigation.

If this was a legitimate RBC number, then with the number of blogs associated with the legitimacy of this number should be clarified/rectified by the RBC website (the one with a green lock in the URL) not just because somebody posts on this blog "It is RBC COLLECTIONS", call the number.  I would suggest to these people to contact "RBC Collections" or "RBC" and notify them of the number of complaints and add some numbers to their website.  Keep in mind, only a very small percentage of people will actually blog about these numbers.

Furthermore, I complained to RBC about the 1423 version, calls stopped.  I did the same for 1406, the calls stopped.  I listed off some other numbers I came across (1400 to 1425 range), I am sure the calls stopped for other people.  They found it very suspicious a message was not left.

After more digging into this number and similar numbers and additional fraud information.

RCMP advise:

1. Collect as much information as possible about the caller.
2. Do not give out any information on yourself with regards to credit cards, etc.
3. Call your bank through a known number, like the one on the back of your card.
4. Verify the information you have collected from the alleged bank representative.
5. If the bank can not verify the information, then report the caller to the appropriate authorities bank, RCMP, Canadian Anti-Fraud Bureau.

The most important thing to understand is never give personal information unless you have initiated the phone call to a known and trusted bank number (back of Credit Card).

The scammers are the ones posting to this blog and others saying "Pay your bills!" or some other phrase to that effect.

The reality of the situation is when these scammers do call they are off shore and are not subject to Canadian Law.  This number called with only TD Bank on the call display.  There was no number associated with the call display.  They did leave this number as a call back number 866-485-5354.  I typed it in my search engine, low and behold, this is the first thing on the list.  Complaints about this number.  I have had similar phone calls from people pretending to be RBC on a 855-560-1406 number.  Currently RBC is investigating this number and other numbers in that range.  In a contact email, they have already stated all numbers show up on the RBC website.  These scammers have some information, but not all your information.  They are "Phishing" for more information.  The banks already have your information.

1. Check your bank website for all contact numbers.
2. Report to RCMP Phonebusters or Canadian Anti-Fraud Agency and your bank (more imortantly, the security/fraud division).
3. If you do answer and talk to somebody, then get the following information:

    a. Full Name of the person calling/Employee Number
    b. Any and all call back numbers
    c. Address of their location (Street Address, City, Province (State), Country
    d. Tell them you will call them back after verifying the above information

4. Do not cave in to threats or harassment as it is their job to separate you from your money.  Banks do not threaten or harass people, they do their best at friendly customer service.
5. If they tell you to mail your money to a specified address, write the address down to pass along to the appropriate authorities.  Always do transactions with your bank directly.
6. Be aware of mail fraud and email fraud.  They will try to send you official looking notices.  These items are easy to fabricate.
7. If they keep harassing, then notify them you will be contacting your bank, the RCMP, the Anti-Fraud Agency and as many news agencies to warn them of this SCAM.
