Writing up a reply for the court for you (if they actually did it, which we all know they won't since this is yet another scam) is illegal and would earn them a nice pair of matching shiny bracelets for felony identity theft.

Today I got a call from a "private investigator" threatening to serve me with "liquid documentaton" for "attempting to defraud a financial institution". They threatened in the voice mail to haras my family until they find me unless i call them. On a lark I called the number provided in the voicemail, and the recorded message was for URG. An actual process server wouldnt call first, and this company is in violation of so many laws its unreal. if you get a similar voicemail dont panic. It's annoying but they cant do anything to you.

More.  A charge-off by the original lender means that the loan has been satisfied, ergo the loan has been re-compensated through their reporting it as a loss on taxes.  It's been paid already in terms of their fees and costs.

Debt Collector
Been getting calls from this number about twice a week for about a month.  It's URG (United Recovery Group), a shady collections agency/scammer.  They presumably buy old, out of statue of limitations, and charged-off payday loan debt for pennies on the dollar in hopes of scaring people into giving them money.  They have various phone numbers, many starting with "855" or "866".  Some calls will not leave a message,  Some will leave a recorded message stating that there is a legal matter this and that, you have two hours (or days) to call them back, if you don't a statement will be entered on your behalf, etc.  It's all fake.  The really nasty calls will usually show up on your phone as 'unknown', in which case they threaten being served papers, arrested, etc.  Again, this is all untrue.  They will claim that they work for a law firm, or call themselves 'agents' or investigators.  This is more lies.  My latest nasty call said that sheriff's deputies had already tried to serve me twice at my last known residence and that I would have to now pay a $2500 bond.  In this call, as an example, they never mentioned my name, what company they represent, my address, what debt I presumably owe, and who the original debtor supposedly is.  They did however mention the county I reside in (easily divulged through area codes).  It's all fake.

I understand that these calls can be quite unnerving, but don't fall for it.  I'm not a lawyer, but I'm fairly sure that only the original debtor (payday loan company) has any legal (civil, not criminal) recourse against a borrower.  At worst, they could get a judgment against you in civil court and garnish your wages at a certain percentage.  However, this is ONLY if you went to a store-front payday loan establishment which HAS to be licensed to give loans in your state.  And, if you were served civil-suit paperwork (depending on amount), it would be from a small-claims court and a court process-server would serve you said papers (not a sheriff, or deputies, or the police).  As a civil matter, you would never be arrested or go to jail.  If you received a payday loan from an online payday vendor, more likely than not, they aren't licensed at all, much less licensed to operate in your state.  In this case, these vendors have absolutely no legal rights (and neither do third-party collection agencies such as this URG).  If you live in Arizona (or I believe 16 other states), any type of payday loan is illegal.  In the case of AZ, all types of payday loans (store-front or on-line) became illegal after June 30th, 2010.  If you received a loan from an online provider after this date, the loan was illegal in the first place and there is nothing to payback... and the company that made the loan is obviously not licensed in the state and just plain stupid for giving you a loan (buyer beware becomes loaner beware).  Many of these online payday loan providers will say or claim that they are on this or that Indian reservation and are not subject to Federal and State laws.  This would be true if they made loans amongst themselves, but once they make a loan outside of the reservation (to you... if you live in a state that bans payday loans or requires them to be licensed as store-front businesses), the loan becomes illegitimate- illegal.

This is why your bad loan was charged-off by the original debtor as a loss for their tax purposes.  They were done with you a long time ago.  They sold your debt to a bottom-feeder collection agency that has no legal recourse whatsoever for pennies.  These collection agencies (URG) harass and scare you into making a payment or paying a settlement offer.  If you fell for it and gave them even a dollar, they probably made money.  So yes, they are going to call you and harass you and spout all sorts of incredulous lies and threats.  They can't actually do anything at all.  Unfortunately, after a few months of trying, they will sell your bad debt again to a different bottom-feeding recovery company and the process starts all over.  Take heart, it will eventually stop.  Now, the original debtors will most likely report you to their own internal version of credit reporting agencies (not the big three).  This will most likely result in you never getting a payday loan again (which is a good thing).  Some may even report you to Experian, etc.  Take heart, this costs them money to do so (and is why they often don't).  Screwing your credit rating is about the only thing they can do... and usually within 2-4 years, nobody gives a sh@t anyway.

My personal advice should you receive calls from collection agencies like this is simple:  NEVER ANSWER THE PHONE!  NEVER CALL THEM BACK!  Why?  Well, if you do, you are just confirming that the number they have is good, and the harassment will become even more harassing.  If you talk to them, they will ask for personal info (phishing) and then you're in a world of hurt.  And, to a degree, if you ever acknowledge the debt, you may have just renewed the statue of limitations, and that you may have actually agreed that you owe said company money (which they may then actually take you to court).

I suggest googling any unknown number that appears on your phone.  Be vigilant.  Yes, what these companies are doing, especially their tactics, is illegal. It's extremely difficult to ever successfully sue them.  On the flip-side, most judges and almost every State attorney general just scoffs about their own claims of being owed money.

Hope this long post either educated you or put your mind at ease.  Check your own state's laws or consult an attorney.

More... If you do talk to these collections people, ask for a confirmation of the debt in writing to be sent to you via certified letter.  If you don't receive one within 30 days, said (alleged) debt is null and void.  Don't worry, they can't do this because they don't have this information.  You can also ask for their mailing address so that you can send them a cease and desist order, as well as inform your state attorney general of their actions.  Most likely, they will have hung up on you by now, thus confirming that it's all a scam.

Recieved a recorded voicemail from them and decided to call them back. Call was ansered "legal department". I asked why there were calling and she said hold on let me pull your file from the attorneys desk and put me on hold. At this point she hasn't asked my name or any other information. So I play along with this so called suite and try to get information out of her. He tries to verify the last four of my social and finds out that she has called the wrong person....imagine that...but the lawsuite is still being filed. Ok so what does this have to do with me?...my phone number was used in a scam so somewhere along the line this becomes MY problem...I don't think so. I told her to go ahead and file away on your suite because it's you money you are wasting not mine. My phone number has nothing to do someone else's debit, but I guess they see it different. Good thing I recorded the call so when/ IF we ever get to court I can play this for the judge. I will keep recording all calls from them until this all goes away. Then maybe I will file a lawsuite agaist them....KARMA

They have called me 6 times today. I called after I got off work , they answer the phone don't say what they are or anything just start saying that I took a payday loan out 4 yrs ago, not true and when it said they were nuts, hung up on me, called back told them who my lawyer was and the number, woman screamed at me that she wasn't gonna go through all that and hung up, called back and some "investigator" tried to tell me when I asked for written documentation that they had tried to serve me with papers at every address I had lived, when I said well I've been at the same address since 2005 and no one has ever tried to serve papers here she hung up. I called my lawyer and gave him their number.

Started getting collection calls in June 2012 after getting a new cell phone and number.  Never heard of the guy they are after and have never picked up the phone.  This "debt" was bounced to lower and lower collection firms until now it's with URG here in Utah.  They got it around 6 months ago and they average 3 calls a day now.  Initially it was a lot more.  Since their address is in Lehi, Utah which is only about 5 miles away.  I may drop on in and give them hell.

Since they are bugging me, they obviously have no idea where the guy they want lives, works, his phone number or anything else about their target.  I'd get a new number, but I love listening to their threatening messages!  These clowns are hilarious!

Extortion Scam Related to Delinquent Payday Loans

Washington, D.C.
December 07, 2010  FBI National Press Office
(202) 324-3691

The Internet Crime Complaint Center has received many complaints from victims of payday loan telephone collection scams. Callers claim the victim is delinquent in a payday loan and must repay the loan to avoid legal consequences. The callers purport to be representatives of the FBI, Federal Legislative Department, various law firms, or other legitimate-sounding agencies. They claim to be collecting debts for companies such as United Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Net, and other Internet check-cashing services.

According to complaints received from the public, the callers have accurate data about victims, including Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, employer information, bank account numbers, and the names and telephone numbers of relatives and friends. How the fraudsters obtained the personal information varies, but in some cases victims have reported they completed online applications for other loans or credit cards before the calls started.

The fraudsters relentlessly call the victim?s home, cell phone, and place of employment. They refuse to provide any details about the alleged payday loans and become abusive when questioned. The callers have threatened victims with legal actions, arrests, and, in some cases, physical violence if they do not pay. In many cases, the callers harass victims? relatives, friends, and employers.

Some fraudsters have instructed victims to fax a statement agreeing to pay a certain amount, on a specific date, via a pre-paid Visa card. The statement further declares the victim will never dispute the debt.

If you receive these calls, do not follow the caller?s instructions. Rather, you should:

?Notify your banking institutions.
?Contact the three major credit bureaus and request an alert be put on your file.
?Contact your local law enforcement agencies if you feel you are in immediate danger.
?File a complaint at www.IC3.gov.
Tips to avoid becoming a victim of this scam:

?Never give your Social Security number?or personal information of any kind?over the telephone or online unless you initiate the contact.
?Be suspicious of any e-mail with urgent requests for personal financial information. The e-mail may include upsetting or exciting but false statements to get you to react immediately.
?Avoid filling out forms in e-mail messages that request personal information.
?Ensure that your browser is up-to-date and security patches have been applied.
?Check your bank, credit, and debit card statements regularly to make sure that there are no unauthorized transactions. If anything looks suspicious, contact your bank and all card issuers.
?When you contact companies, use numbers provided on the back of cards or statements

They're a collections agency not a law firm.

What you describe is illegal so try threatening them with the FBI. It stopped them from calling for a few days. Not long but at least shut them up a while.

Call the FBI, FTC and FCC.

They're in violation of more than that.

I found them on some business site and there are a bunch of businesses that hired them to collect and URG has never given those companies the money that was collected.

If you believed you have been KLed, please contact I high end computer professional or IT person immediately (I know a heck of a lot more about computer fraud that phone fraud).  New versions of these things are nasty (and some are targeting cells phones), and folks writing malicious codes are always one step ahead of people trying to stop them with anti-virus stuff.

Also, never click on an unknown attachment to an email, or an link in an email or IM (even if you know the person who sent it, you need to be 100% sure about things).  The account it is being sent form (even if it is your best friend) may have been compromised.

Many of these so called "debt collectors" out there, I have invited them to serve me, told them they better show up but no one ever does. They give bogus physical addresses so you can't serve them court paperwork to find out where they got our information. They tell you they own the debt and when you ask to get the phone number/contact information of the original company, they say that they cannot supply that information or don't have the information. Hmmm let's see scum bag, you buy bad debt accounts but you can't get a hold of the company you bought it from?! Scam, scam, scam. People, when you ask to verify debt, an email with a PDF with the "debt collector's" company letter and your information is not good enough! If they cannot supply you with the correct information, nothing will hold up in court. Take them to court, and if you actually see them, file a suit against them and collect $1000 + court and lawyer costs.
